'He's a huge X factor' - Valeri Nichushkin is peaking at just the right ... (ESPN)

After a lackluster earlier part of his NHL career, the 2013 first-rounder has finally found success -- and has been bumped up to the top line as a result.

"He's been huge and he just continues to get better and better and he's a big, important piece for us." Nichushkin's teammates are used to seeing (and discussing) MacKinnon's level of focus; now they can put Nichushkin in the same category, too. He's highly dedicated, highly motivated, and he puts in a lot of work and he's one of our hardest-working guys." "That's the type of guy he is. The battles, the races that he can win, it fits his style." What he needed was patience, and the right environment to thrive in. The things he does don't go unnoticed in our locker room and with all the other guys. The Stars lured him stateside again on a two-year, $5.9 million contract in July 2018. And then he has the ability to play with high-end talent, make plays and finish things off. "He's a huge X factor," coach Jared Bednar said of Nichushkin after Game 1. The 27-year-old had a career-invigorating regular season, with 25 goals and 52 points in 62 games. He's easily the least heralded top-line skater in this series, hidden in the shadow of Nathan MacKinnon and Gabriel Landeskog.

Avalanche's Valeri Nichushkin is having himself a playoffs — and ... (The Athletic)

With two more goals in the Avalanche's Game 2 victory, Nichushkin looks little like the guy who once went 91 games without scoring.

And he’s the ultimate facilitator and has scoring to match. According to Evolving Hockey, Nichushkin had a 58.4 percent expected goal rate in the regular season. “But then he came back, didn’t have a good season, and then I thought it was a knee-jerk reaction for Dallas to buy him out.” He’s relentless on the forecheck. He re-signed for two years and continues to pay the Avs back with quality play. He’s just the guy that drives the play all night. “I’m so shocked the way he’s playing,” the coach said. Nichushkin signed a one-year, $850,000 deal with the Avs in 2019 because he felt the system would be good for him, and it was. “He’s a train for us,” Makar said. But the next year, he had hip surgery and was limited to eight games. He’s oblivious to the whole thing. Hyman, 30, is entering Year 2 of a seven-year, $38.5 million deal ($5.5 million cap hit) with the Edmonton Oilers.

More recently, and much more egregiously, his government has detained WNBA superstar Brittney Griner for months for the alleged crime of carrying hashish oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. And that was something he acknowledged when asked about the war earlier this week. Such is the state of global affairs in the wake of Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s unilateral decision to invade Ukraine. Thanks to his unprovoked attack, the rest of his countrymen are treated like accomplices.

From Castaway to Hero, Valeri Nichushkin Has Reinvented Himself (The Hockey News)

Three seasons removed from a buyout, Valeri Nichushkin has transformed himself from a struggling depth forward to one of Colorado's most important scoring ...

And that's how he drew the penalty that led to his power-play goal -- he's built like a fighter out there. The timing of this run is interesting for Colorado, to say the least. In his return to the NHL after two years back home in the KHL, Nichushkin took 65 shots in 57 games and didn't score on any one of them. The following year, he had 21 points in the COVID-19-shortened campaign, acting as a good secondary scoring the Stars were salivating for at one point. And then, on the ensuing power play, he was rewarded for it with the game's opening goal. What makes Nichushkin's season so incredible is because of how far down he was in hockey's hierarchy.

With a 3-1 predicted score Darcy Kuemper should rack up enough saves to be worthy of rostering in a flex spot, in addition to getting credit for the win. However, for the sake of trying to be different I'm going to build one geared more toward say a 3-1 Colorado win. This Stanley Cup Finals matchup is a highly anticipated one with the great storyline of having the "best" team in the league who's been trying to get over the hump, facing off against the team who has been at the top of the mountain each of the past two seasons.

The Journey: Nichushkin and The Post-Hype Big Men (dobberhockey.com)

The scouting team over at Dobber Prospects just released their final rankings for the 2022 NHL draft. Check it out! They ranked the relentless big man Juraj ...

Although Gourde, 30, went from the best (Tampa) to the worst (Seattle) team in the league this past year, he posted an identical pace of 53 points in both 2020-21 and 2021-22. He is a Restricted Free Agent (RFA) this offseason, so his next contract should provide more context for what we can expect from him moving forward, but he will likely get a slight raise and flirt with 50 points as he hits his BT 14 games into 2022-23. He is still one of the purest goal scorers in the league in terms of his shot and puck skills. While the Devils are a team on the rise, led by their two former #1 overall centers in Nico Hischier (2017) and Jack Hughes (2019) and boosted by elite prospects like Alexander Holtz, Dawson Mercer, and Ty Smith, it's not clear whether or not Zacha will stand to benefit from his team's progression. It wouldn't be surprising to see the 24-year-old Laine finally join and remain in the ranks of the NHL's elite forwards for the next decade or so. Plus, Laine has become even more dangerous as a scorer because he has improved his playmaking over the past few years to the point that his assists now outnumber his goals. He saw some AHL time and posted 30 points over his next 87 NHL games before heading back to Russia to play in the KHL. After two KHL seasons, he rejoined the Stars for 57 games and put up a lowly 10 points. Laine, of course, scored 44 goals and 70 points in his second year with Winnipeg and has two other point-per-game seasons under his belt but has also struggled with inconsistency, posting two years of close to half-a-point per game. But when building your team in keeper and dynasty formats, it's important to consider players currently in the NHL through that same lens. When he crossed the pond in 2013-14 and put up 34 points in 79 games for Dallas as a rookie, poolies were ecstatic. The dramatic rise of Slafkovsky on boards all across the industry, plus the critical role that fellow big man Valeri Nichushkin (6-4, 210 lbs) is playing for the Colorado Avalanche in their postseason run, has inspired the focus for this week's Journey: using Dobber's concept of the Breakout Threshold (BT), we'll look around the league for other post-hype big men like Nichushkin who seem to be putting everything together and attempt to project their ultimate upside. He was drafted tenth overall back in 2013 by Dallas and there was an incredible amount of hype around the young, rangy Russian. He split time that year between the three Russian leagues (MHL, VHL, KHL) and posted decent numbers.

Avalanche star Valeri Nichushkin is 'built for this time of year' (The Washington Post)

On a team full of superstars, Valeri Nichushkin has emerged as one of Colorado's most important players.

Nichushkin’s development has been a product of his work ethic and internal motivation since he arrived in Colorado. Bednar said most nights, whenever he is looking at video after a game, he’ll think he’s the last one there. He then returned to Dallas for the 2018-19 season, a year he failed to record a single goal and had only 10 assists. He had a subpar 2015-16 season in Dallas before he returned to Russia to play in the Kontinental Hockey League for two seasons. He recorded 13 goals and 27 points in 57 games. The next morning? He has been one of the best players — if not the best — in these Stanley Cup finals. He’s lanky and he just constantly puts you under pressure and he’s strong enough to turn the puck over. Nichushkin was bought out by the Stars during the 2019 offseason and the Avalanche signed him to a one-year, one-way $850,000 contract in August 2019. I think there were different things going on … since coming here, I haven’t seen a level of play from a guy consistently — a 200-foot game offensively and defensively — like I’ve been seeing in Val.” He goes out there and does everything right, he does everything well. He’s such a driven human being.” "He's been a horse for us all playoffs,” said Colorado center Alex Newhook. “It's been fun to watch.

Colorado's Valeri Nichushkin Continues To Raise His Level of Play (Yardbarker)

The Colorado Avalanche are up 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Final over the Tampa Bay Lightning thanks in large part to the play of Valeri Nichushkin.

Playing in a system like the one in Colorado has helped Nichushkin in so many ways. Not only is he a depth player but has shown the ability to play in the top six for the Avalanche. Currently, Nichushkin has a salary cap hit of $2.5 million a season after originally signing with the Avalanche for $850,000. And in the playoffs, Nichushkin has taken his game to even new heights. Though it is not on the same level as Nichushkin plays hockey as Rafael Nadal plays tennis. After recording a goal and an assist on the Andre Burakovsky OT winner in Game 1, Nichushkin opened the scoring of Game 2 on the power play. In speaking on Hockey Night in Canada’s 32 Thoughts segment, Elliotte Friedman said, “The word here is Colorado has made him a priority. Hence why his value is so high and the Avalanche have made him a priority this offseason. With Nichushkin set to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season, his play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs will give him a significant pay raise in his next contract. Never finding a role in the lineup. His career season has carried into the Stanley Cup Playoffs as he continues to find new ways to raise his level of play. Nichushkin was just six points shy of his total 58 points combined over the last three seasons.

He’s put his stick into it, He’s starting to shoot pucks now and handle the puck more, catching and releasing it. “Obviously, he’s progressing,” Bednar told reporters before the flight departed for Florida. “He’s been skating every day. “I mean, he's a train for us. I mean, he's been incredible for us.” But since coming here (on March 21), I haven't seen a level of play from a guy consistently, a 200-foot game offensively and defensively like I've been seeing from Val.” I don't think he was comfortable there, I think there were different things going on,” said Cogliano. “Honestly, I can't even describe the type of player Val is. He's just a guy that drives the play all night, he's relentless on the forecheck, he's been scoring. “In Dallas, it was maybe just a different scenario.
