It has been a busy day at The Country Club as the top of the leaderboard remains fluid.

Slightly off of the leaderboard is Patrick Rodgers, who had an impressive eagle in his own right. It was Scheffler's second eagle in as many days and it put him at 6 under for the tournament. He holed out from off the green on the eighth to put himself at 4 under for the tournament.

Scottie Scheffler veers off course after fast start (The Boston Globe)

BROOKLINE — Scottie Scheffler was in the fast lane to the top of the US Open leaderboard Saturday when he hit a couple of potholes and veered off course on ...

We don’t do this very often, and I think it’s very, very fitting and totally acceptable to have this kind of test and this difficult setup for a US Open, and it’s strictly because of conditions. He salvaged a bogey … The back right hole location on the 373-yard par-4 17th is reminiscent of where Justin Leonard drilled his memorable putt during the singles matches that clinched the 1999 Ryder Cup for the United States at TCC. Plenty of fans donned those famous US polos from that day and Leonard, now an analyst, even wore one briefly in the TV booth … With a total purse of $17.5 million, the winner of the 122nd US Open will pocket $3.15 million, while the runner up gets $1.89 million, and the bronze medalist will get $1.255 million. There were 23 players under par entering round 3, only nine players will enter the final round in red numbers … There were only two birdies all day at the 364-yard par-4 seventh, with Joo Hyung Kim and defending champion Jon Rahm getting the honors … Among the craziest happenings of the day was Hideki Matsuyami’s chip from the high grass from behind the fifth green that hit the flagstick on the fly and ricocheted sideways into a bunker. It’s windy, and it should be tough.’’ … Roughest start to the day belonged to Xander Schauffle, who came into the day at 1-under but carded five bogeys and a double bogey for a 42 on the front side. When I’m playing bad, it’s not a lot of fun,’’ he said. When I was playing great on the front nine, it was awesome, and then it’s tough when things start going the wrong direction, and then it was happy again when I birdied 17 and made a good par on 18. “When I’m playing good, it’s a ton of fun. I made the double on 11, and I kind of just — when I walked off that one, I was, like, ‘Dude, just pretend you bogeyed 10 and birdied 8. It was just the third double on 11 the entire tournament and it temporarily threw the normally steady Scheffler off course. “I just kept reminding myself I’m still in the golf tournament. Eventually I was able to steady the ship.’’ I guess I hit a bad shot.

Scottie Scheffler made an impressive eagle on the eighth hole during the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday.

His shot carried a little bit past the hole initially, but he put enough backspin on the ball so that it rolled backwards and into the cup. He has a good chance this weekend to win his second career major. During the third round of the US Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass, Scheffler eagled the par-five eighth hole from 102 yards out.

At that point, he was already the world’s No. 1-ranked player, and he’s still in that spot. He capped his incredible stretch of spring golf at the Masters in April, as he won his first major championship by five shots with a 12-under-par score. His approach hit the green near the pin, spun back to the right and fell into the cup for the eagle. Scheffler pitched out but his shot fell short of the green and remained in the rough. His tee shot flew over the green and found the rough, landing near the red hazard line. Scheffler started the round birdie-bogey-birdie and then put together a beautiful eagle on the 560-yard par-5 eighth hole.

"It's a shot I've been practicing and it's a shot I've been working on. After he hit his second shot into a bunker on the 18th hole and didn't hit a good chip shot, he slammed his wedge on his cleat and then the ground. "For me, I'm not thinking about what I did a month ago. But he was able to compose himself and make the putt. "I made the double on 11, and when I walked off that one, I was, like, 'Dude, just pretend you bogeyed 10 and birdied 8. "I just kept reminding myself [that] I'm still in the golf tournament," Scheffler said. In the end, it didn't matter. On the par-3 11th, Scheffler's tee shot bounced hard off the green and nearly went into a hazard on the right. He went from 6 under to 1 under in the four-hole stretch. Then after 13 I just kept trying to pretend that what was happening wasn't happening. He chunked his chip shot and two-putted for a bogey. "The golf course is just hard.

“The wind being a little bit higher and stronger than the last few days, a different direction. Then the course being a little bit firmer, right, that’s just a recipe for difficulty.” And he felt sad when, in the ensuing four holes, he carded a double-bogey and three consecutive bogeys to fall three shots back of the lead. Reigning PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas shot a 2-over 75, and is tied for 25th. Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer and reigning Masters winner, shot a 3-under 32 on the front nine. His second shot went just 11 feet and sunk into the greenside rough. But, on 11, he airmailed his tee shot over the green and into the thick grass. His third rolled 25 feet past the green, and he two-putted for double bogey. “Hopefully this won’t be my last U.S. Open, but, you know, you never know,” Scheffler said. You kind of have to ride the wave out here.” Two-time U.S. Open champ Brooks Koepka started the day at even-par but ended at 5-over after shooting a 75. He followed that with bogeys on 12, 13 and 14 to fall to 1-under for the tournament.

BROOKLINE, Mass. – After a second-round 67 at the U.S. Open, Scottie Scheffler was asked by his wife Meredith to name three emotions he felt that day.

I think that’s kind of the fun of it. But he continued to tell himself that he was still in the golf tournament – knowing how demanding the course was playing. “I think the U.S. Open is very taxing, mentally and physically,” Scheffler said. His second shot caught up in the rough before reaching the green, and he couldn’t get up and down. “For me, I’m not thinking about what I did a month ago. Scheffler has earned four PGA TOUR titles this season, including the Masters, and he’s on the verge of joining historic company. Scheffler, the FedExCup No. 1 and world No. 1, holed out for eagle on the par-5 eighth hole as part of a front-nine 32. His tee shot flew into the rough past the back-left hole location, settling on the hazard line. Scheffler signed for a third-round, 1-over 71; he stands 2-under total, two back of Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick. I’m not thinking about what I did two months ago. But Scheffler went long on the 141-yard hole, leading to a double bogey that was followed by three consecutive bogeys. Can’t take anything for granted in this life.”

Scottie Scheffler apparently has a knack for making difficult shots at major golf tournaments.

F Tyler Motte — Another member of the Rangers’ platoon of trade deadline additions, Motte has endeared himself to both Rangers fans and fans of the team he became an NHL regular with, the Vancouver Canucks. It’s Motte’s hard-nosed, ever-active style of play that makes him so widely appreciated by both fans and coaches alike, but in the absence of offensive production, how much is that style of play worth? Jazz Chisholm was ejected after arguing a called third strike in the ninth inning of the Miami Marlins’ 3-2 loss Saturday to the New York Mets, and he took his frustration to Twitter after the game. He ranks first in home runs (13) and slugging percentage (.527), second in RBI (41) and OPS (.825), and is tied for second in runs scored (34). Almost immediately after Sean Payton surprised many in the football world by stepping down as head coach of the New Orleans Saints in January, he was linked with the Dallas Cowboys as a potential replacement for Mike McCarthy. Before Payton joined the Saints and ultimately guided them to a Super Bowl championship, he spent three years working for the Cowboys as an assistant. Castillo could potentially head to the bullpen and attempt to take over the job of the long man out of the bullpen. As for Francis, 26, acquired in the Rowdy Tellez trade, he was selected to the club’s 40-man roster in the fall, ahead of the Rule 5 draft that ended up getting canceled by the lockout. Bowyer competed in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2005 to 2020 and won 10 Cup Series races over that time before he retired and joined Fox Sports as an analyst. That means that every inch will count in the postseason race to come, with the loss of Betts marking a significant blow. An international signing of the Blue Jays out of Venezuela, Castillo made his professional debut in his age-17 season in 2016. That was enough for a spot in the NBA Play-In Tournament, but the Hornets lost 132-103 to the Atlanta Hawks and were eliminated from postseason contention. His shot carried a little bit past the hole initially, but he put enough backspin on the ball so that it rolled backwards and into the cup. The former MVP is having yet another excellent campaign, hitting .273/.349/.535 for a 148 wRC+. Combining that batting line with his excellent defense and baserunning, Betts has already accrued 3.3 wins above replacement on the year, in the estimation of FanGraphs. The Dodgers are having another excellent season, as has come to be the norm for them.

So the same course that Zalatoris called “a beast” caught up to Scheffler at the same place it caught up to him in the third round — at the par-3 11th hole. To be at the end was definitely a lot of fun. He was leading at 6-under in the middle of his round Sunday just like he was leading at 6-under in the middle of his round Saturday, when he double-bogeyed the devilish 11th. But after giving himself a clean, midrange look on the 18th, Scheffler couldn’t sink the one last birdie putt he needed to get into a playoff. I told his sister Molly that he might birdie the last three. Scheffler would stand over a short par putt as the last man in The Country Club field who hadn’t missed at least one putt inside 5 feet. “So it was kind of a roller-coaster week. Trailing Fitzpatrick and Will Zalatoris by two strokes, Scheffler birdied the first two holes and four of the first six to take temporary control of the final round. But the U.S. Open is known as the most forbidding major for a reason. Nobody would’ve been surprised had Scheffler taken it from there, created separation, and reminded the millions watching why he’s the best golfer on the planet. This confession of a Masters winner was shocking to anyone who had watched his rise to prominence. But Scheffler arrived at The Country Club on Sunday fully expecting to win.

Scheffler had been trying to be the first player to win two majors in one year since Brooks Koepka in 2018. A 25-year-old Dallas transplant, Scheffler put his fourth shot — and third attempt at the green — about 6 feet from the hole to save par. Scheffler teed off on No. 10 alone at 6 under, but Fitzpatrick had joined him by the time he lined up his second shot on the 503-yard par 4. He missed that, then circled the lip on his 3-foot par putt. After that, I just kept trying to keep plugging along and hit good shots.“ On his second stab at the green, he again hit the false front and wound up two yards farther away than where he started. “To be at the end was definitely a lot of fun. I’m going to recover from this and move on and hopefully be better from here.” “I played good golf, but it wasn’t good enough,” he said. BROOKLINE, Mass.
