Yasmeen Fletcher on Her "Beyond-Fulfilling" Ms. Marvel Role (Who What Wear)

Actress Yasmeen Fletcher on landing her dream role in Ms. Marvel, showcasing a strong mixed-race character on-screen, and her love of costume design.

โ€œI think my fashion and style is still evolving, but the more that I gather pieces that I like, the more it progresses.โ€ Playing dress-up for hours on end with Bhasin was Fletcherโ€™s favorite part of the filming process, which is unsurprising considering she, too, has dabbled in the world of costume design. The experience, which included 17 (yes, 17!) outfit changes for the lead character alone, gave the actress a newfound appreciation for the world of costume design.

Yasmeen Fletcher on Ms. Marvel Episode 2, Nakia | POPSUGAR ... (POPSUGAR)

Yasmeen Fletcher opens up to POPSUGAR about Ms. Marvel, playing Nakia, representing women who wear hijabs, and her lightning-bolt tattoo.

"She just doesn't really like the way that superheroes have handled the saving of the world because it also causes a little bit of destruction, too." "She thinks that the real heroes are the people on the streets making change," she says. "You would think in that two-year time period, we would be like, 'So I'm ready now,'" she says. She adds, "As much as she has her grievances with superheroes, she also really, really, really loves her best friend." When Fletcher heard rumours about a show adaptation, the actor told her manager she needed to be a part of it and she needed to play her favourite character, Nakia. "She's just so strong and she's kind of a badass," Fletcher says of her character. "I've never heard the mixed experience talked about on TV because it feels like a niche topic, but it's not. As Fletcher points out, it's clear from the first two episodes of "Ms. Marvel" that Nakia is not a fan of superheroes. She runs to the bathroom in a panic, and Nakia follows her. "I was really passionate about translating her correctly," she explains. "Nakia and Kamala are so genuinely supportive of each other and have so much love for each other," she says. Assuming her friend is on her period, she passes her a tampon over the stall door. There's a very fun moment where Nakia explains her game plan to Kamala and Bruno ( Matt Lintz) at the mosque's Eid party.
