Edmonton, which showcased Commonwealth Stadium during the Canadian men's national team's 2022 World Cup qualifying run last November, was not selected.

“This is as much about the economy as it is about sports," he said. “This city is the world in one place, and so no matter what teams come to play here, you know there’s a community that’s ready to cheer them on and ready to be crazy with enthusiasm.” A report presented to Toronto city council this spring pegged the cost of hosting World Cup games at $290 million. "We see this as an investment for the future and it's going to pay off." "And we're looking at $1 billion coming to B.C." Commonwealth Stadium is the biggest facility in Western Canada and would play an excellent host." "Alberta’s government worked hard and committed a significant financial sum to help the bid along. “It’s going to be great for the game, it’s going to be great for the city, it’s going to be great for the economy, it’s going to be great for the spirit of the city,” he said. Tory framed the World Cup as a chance to build Toronto’s legacy, saying millions of people will tune into watch the games, and thousands more will descend on Toronto to watch in person. "We know that there's affordability challenges, and when you make investments like this, we have also done the math that there's going to be a return on that investment," she said. "I made a commitment as minister that we were going to get maximum return for British Columbia and that this is going to be an investment for British Columbians," she said. B.C. negotiated five "pre-matches" in addition to games that are part of the official World Cup schedule, said Melanie Mark, the province's minister of tourism, arts, culture and sport.

Today, @FIFAWorldCup announced that Toronto will be a Host City in #FIFAWorldCup2026!

It was great to celebrate with so many people involved in this bid effort - including @cityoftoronto, @MLSEPR and @CanadaSoccerEN. Looking forward to welcoming everyone to Toronto in 2026! "[B.C. Place] has been empty for two years because of the pandemic and we have a chance to invite those visitors here to come and stay in our hotels and go to our restaurants and shop and visit," she said. "It is unfortunate that soccer fans will not experience the beauty and vibrancy of Edmonton and our province as a whole," he said. While it’s not the result we wanted, we are incredibly proud of the Edmonton 2026 Bid. We have done a tremendous job putting our city’s best foot forward in advancing our candidacy.

FIFA has announced the venues that will host matches during the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

All of the 2026 World Cup will be played on natural grass. "Together with our good friends in Canada and Mexico, we couldn't be more excited to work with FIFA to host what we think will be the greatest World Cup in history. "Our stated goal is to have the finals," Hunt said. "When we built the stadium, it was to have great, great events," Jones said. In 1994, the Cotton Bowl hosted World Cup matches. To be able to participate in such an event is ... really awesome and inspiring." Originally starting with candidates from 44 cities and 49 stadiums across North America, the process to select venues began in 2017. Not making the list were areas such as Chicago, Minneapolis and Arizona, due to what city officials described as issues with FIFA's financial demands. We'll be engaging with all of the cities that weren't chosen to host matches. "I want to congratulate all the bid cities that will host games. Once the tournament reaches the quarterfinal stage, all remaining knockout round games will be held in the U.S. "We will be working in clusters, making sure that the teams and the fans don't have to travel too much in different areas: West, Central and East."

The city is exploring a bid for the 2030 Winter Olympics, which is led by Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Wautuh First Nations. Mark said she was thrilled to “welcome the world” to B.C. “We’re going to do our best to share the wealth and get creative as possible to host the world and British Columbians who don’t live here in Vancouver to come here or to bring the games out to their community.” Vancouver has been selected as one of three sites – as part of a joint bid with the U.S. and Mexico – to jointly host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The good news? The bad news? Infantino shirked a question on sites for the opening match and the final, although New York looks a strong shot for the latter with Mexico City’s historic Azteca a good bet for the opener. “It’s very special to bring the World Cup to Canada. It will be the greatest celebration Canada has ever witnessed. There will be FIFA fan zones — plazas for locals and visitors alike who couldn’t get a ticket — to plan. A pity but not nearly as much of a shame as a World Cup passing through these parts and neither Chicago nor Montreal, two incredible sporting and cultural hubs, being involved. All of which left Cincinnati, Denver, Nashville, Orlando, Pasadena and Baltimore on the outside looking in. Things moved on to the Central area and Edmonton’s flickering hopes were extinguished. Vancouver was the first to disappear, soon after the North American bid was successful. The only reason there were 11 spots for the dominant partner of this first ever tripartite World Cup was because Edmonton had been shunted to one side. But now the work begins. Being confirmed as host venues for the world’s biggest sporting event is more than enough reason to pop a few corks.
