Only Merion, with 19, has been the site of more, and the Open is scheduled to return there in 2030. And the Country Club has it.” “The ghosts of the past matter. “The players love this place,” Bodenhamer said. The Australian player Cameron Smith called the Country Club “my favorite U.S. Open venue I think I’ve been to. That year, the U.S. Open was held at Merion Golf Club, outside Philadelphia. It, too, has a small footprint and is in a residential suburban neighborhood. There is a short, downhill par-3 that hasn’t been used in a U.S. Open since 1913. But the tournament proved to be a success and soon Bodenhamer was in touch with officials at the Country Club to see if there was any interest in hosting a U.S. Open. There was. But the club is tucked away in an exclusive neighborhood in a Boston suburb with little room to accommodate the growing demands of modern major tournaments. “The footprint was small,” Bodenhamer said. Explaining the decision in 2002, John Cornish, the chairman of the 1999 Ryder Cup matches at the club, said, “we were faced with the need to downsize the scope of services, local corporations and the media. It was the site of arguably the most important moment in American golf history — the 1913 U.S. Open won by the amateur Francis Ouimet in a playoff over the celebrated British professionals Ted Ray and Harry Vardon.

That's going to play as basically a 100-yard shot for the pros, I think, and that's just ... *chef's kiss.* He has a solo second and a T8 at the first two major tournaments this year, and this course is a really nice setup for him. The 2022 U.S. Open will be available via streaming on Peacock with exclusive windows as well as featured groups. In what has been somewhat of a downturn of a season after last year’s best-in-class form, this is the perfect opportunity for Rahm to get back on track. He has bogeyed Nos. 1, 3 and now 4, with a par at No. 2. None of this is secret anymore — hell, two decades have passed — but in Boston, old habits die hard, and when one guy from the neighborhood tells a story about another guy from the neighborhood, it’s best not to blab. Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open at The Country Club, which was held in 1988. Like Southern Hills, designer Gil Hanse has been working with The Country Club to prepare for this U.S. Open. The ball rams into the jar and Leonard takes off running. “See over there,” the caddie says, pointing to a spot on the green. Those are the stories in the annals. A Rory or JT or Speith or Rahm. I think they all have a good chance.

U.S. Open 2022: Abraham Ancer's withdrawal also means Rickie Fowler becomes the first alternate for the 122nd U.S. Open.

His buddy Jordan Spieth, who it was reported by the Golf Channel was battling a stomach bug, wasn’t seen until about 45 minutes before his tee time on Thursday, but did arrive at The Country Club and does appear ready to tee it up. So Rickie will need to rely on another competitor’s misfortune to find himself in the field this week. Ancer was replaced by Patton Kizzire, who was the first alternate, having been the first man out from the Roswell, Ga., U.S. Open qualifying site.

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: Jordan Spieth struggles early, Rory ... (GolfDigest.com)

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: The latest news and analysis from our writers at the 122nd U.S. Open at Brookline.

6:48 a.m.: The action is officially underway at The Country Club! Michael Thorbjornsen, a 20-year-old amateur from Massachusetts teeing it up at Brookline (sound familiar?) had the honor of hitting the first tee shot off the first tee. What a great thrill for the 58-year-old. 8:03 a.m.: Hideki Matusyama sticks his tee shot at the par-3 11th hole, which is playing as the easiest hole on the course thus far, to grab a share of the lead. A tough early bogey from Spieth ... and just by the eye test, he doesn't look 100 percent post-stomach bug. Again, just like Spieth, people were down on Morikawa on the eve of the U.S. Open because he admitted to some reporters he was having trouble hitting a fade. Hopefully the Mighty Quinn's friends and family screenshotted that shot of the leaderboard while he was up there. And speaking of struggles, Hideki just double bogeyed the par-4 12th hole after that birdie at 11. 8:30 a.m.: Russell Henley is the first player to 2-under, birdieing the 10th and 12th holes early in his round. 9:14 p.m.: Maybe not the biggest name but qualifier Harry Hall with a beautiful shot on the par 3 11th just north of the hole. 8:40 a.m.: Henley has company at the top, as Collin Morikawa just rolled another nice birdie putt in at the fifth hole. Adam Scott doesn't put enough on it and the ball will find its way to the bottom of the steep eighth incline. Of course, the beauty of a U.S. Open are the never-ending storylines that its competitors present itself.

Golf, rocks: Old-school US Open on tap at The Country Club (Toronto Star)

BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) — The 2022 U.S. Open most certainly has not been supersized.

It’s possible here because of the severe bunkering front and left, a 10-foot drop off in back into gnarly brush and a downhill tee shot to a green that slopes back to front. But a look at recent history shows that a supersized course is not a guarantee of keeping the numbers down. There are big doglegs — the famed 17th hole (Think Francis Ouimet and the celebration at the 1999 Ryder Cup ) measures only 375 yards but has a massive crook in the middle guarded by a tree line on the left and four bunkers that jut into the left side of the fairway. That’s a distinction that has long been reserved for the most picturesque hole in golf, the seventh at Pebble Beach with its green jutting into the pacific. Some suspected the course setup there was impacted by the previous year, when Rory McIlroy tore up 7,574-yard Congressional and won with a record score of 268. They are heavily sloped — from back to front, or sideways In total, the putting surfaces average only about 4,400 square feet per green, the second-smallest green complex, behind Pebble Beach, in championship golf. But The Country Club’s welcome back was really triggered in 2013. Some might say its length — a modest 7,254 yards — is more reasonable than in the recent past. “Probably my favorite U.S. Open venue I’ve been to.” Scheffler and 155 others will be forced to think their way around a course filled with blind tee shots. It has a drivable par-4, a reachable par 5, and will also feature a par-3 that could play less than 100 yards. After a week of handwringing about the future of the sport and the defections to the breakaway LIV Tour, the actual golf starts Thursday on a course that will remind some of the old days.

2022 U.S. Open leaderboard: Live coverage, golf scores today ... (CBSSports.com)

The 122nd U.S. Open gets underway Thursday with the national championship taking place at one of the oldest golf courses in the United States.

The major championship record is poor, but take out his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and Cantlay has unbelievable this year. McIlroy has top 10s in three of his last four majors and three straight U.S. Opens. The fact that he hasn't captured one of these coveted championships since 2014 is obscene given some of the low rounds he's shot, but he finally seems to be back to form. This is the best Rory has played entering a major in quite a while, and he's even coming off a title defense at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy also seems to feel like he has the game of golf on his back given his staunch support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. If he plays his game, he'll be in the mix, and we've already seen him this season hang with the big dogs with wins at The Players Championship and the Sentry Open plus top-five finishes at the Masters and the RSM Classic. Brookline is going to demand precisely what Smith can bring: a killer short game for its lightning-quick greens and precision off the tees for the numerous blind shots golfers will be making this week. J.T. is one of the three best iron players on the planet, and his hot putter has translated to wins and near wins for the last two months. He's playing the best golf of his career and has paired an ever-present confidence that nobody in the world is better than him with a wisdom that can only be attained with age and experience. The Olympian has pulled out of the 122nd U.S. Open citing health concerns. Four days of major championship golf on a menacing course in a terrific city. Behind them are Adam Scott, Max Homa and a 75% Jordan Spieth. For those of you not in the know, the three-time major winner is experiencing some tummy issues -- pro move not wearing white pants. Those two legends of the game make way for new ones as world No. 3 Rory McIlroy begin his quest for major No. 5 in the early hours of the first round. For all the nonsense that's happened this week, what better Day 1 story could there be than a lifelong journeyman whose son is serving as caddie leading after the first 18 holes?

But, yeah, you're going to encounter things this week that you don't usually come across the other weeks of the year, and you just have to try to accept them as best you can." Scottie Scheffler is trying to become the seventh different player to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same calendar year. The 2022 U.S. Open is underway at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Reigning champ Jon Rahm is trying to defend his title.

U.S. Open 2022: Jon Rahm has golf ball stolen on 18th hole, still ... (GolfDigest.com)

A bizarre situation on The Country Club's 18th hole didn't keep the defending champ from making a closing birdie on Thursday.

I just saw a lot of them get close and not go in, and to hit two wayward drives in the last two holes and somehow end up with two birdie putts and making the last one -- it's more the fact of making putt to break par on the first round of the U.S. Open. It's quite a big deal." The defending U.S. Open champ had concerns on the hole before when he wasn't sure if his tee shot or provisional was in bounds, but he wound up being OK and making par. I recognized the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face," Rahm said laughing. Rahm was in good spirits about it after, because the unusual occur didn't keep him from making a closing birdie. As if the USGA's setup of The Country Club isn't hard enough, apparently, players this week need to be on the lookout for a couple of golf ball bandits. Moments earlier, Rahm arrived at where his tee shot on the par-4 18th had settled in the left rough.

US Open updates: A rough start for Mickelson on birthday (The Washington Post)

Joel Dahmen has made it a foursome atop the U.S. Open leaderboard among the early starters at The Country Club.

He was replaced in the field by Patton Kizzire, who tees off in the afternoon. Jon Rahm’s defense of his U.S. Open title is off to a good start. He has never made the cut. The 2011 U.S. Open champion drove into the lip of a bunker on the right side of the 310-yard, par-4 hole. David Lingmerth was also at 3 under, with a few holes to play. “If that doesn’t scream to you it’s the Open,” then nothing will, he said. A heck of a finish for Rahm, who struggled with his swing across the back nine. But during the round? He was 2 under when he reached the drivable par-4 fifth, but he blocked his drive right and ended up with a terrible lie – the ball in deep grass just above a bunker. He shot 3-under 67 to finish even with Callum Tarren and David Lingmerth with most of the morning rounds complete. Mickelson had a bogey from the fairway on the first hole and is 1 over through two holes. He played last week for the first time in four months, and there appears to be plenty of rust still in his game.

T42. Joaquin Niemann, Sam Burns, Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners and eight others (+1): After an eagle on the par-5 eighth, it appeared that Niemann would threaten the first page of the leaderboard as he stood at 2 under for the day. It felt as if he was all over the place Thursday as he carded four birdies to offset four bogeys. In his five U.S. Open appearances, he has five top-10 finishes; however, he has yet to truly contend as his average deficit entering the final round has been 5.4 strokes. While Young was in a similar spot as Spieth from a statistical standpoint, Cantlay was not as his iron play was simply dreadful. Having been in the final pairing at the 2022 PGA Championship, it is possible the heartache from Southern Hills leads to jubilation in Brookline. He has been knocking on the door for what seems like an eternity and on paper the 2022 version of Fitzpatrick is different. He will need this area of the bag to rebound as he has had some trouble backing up one great round with another. Leading the field in strokes gained tee to green, there is still room for improvement as the 34-year-old ranked 60th in strokes gained putting in Round 1. The Canadian is in the midst of a sneaky strong season, which at one point included three consecutive top-10 finishes but has yet to taste contention in a major championship. He continued his fine play Thursday at The Country Club, but it was not without some head scratching moments. Defending champion Jon Rahm, PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and two-time major title-holder Collin Morikawa are all only three strokes back at 1 under, and they will look to ascend up the leaderboard in Friday's second round. Dropping a shot late in his round, McIlroy would later be matched by by Joel Dahmen, MJ Daffue and a pair of European counterparts at 3 under.

Phil Mickelson in jeopardy of missing cut at U.S. Open after carding ... (ESPN)

Phil Mickelson struggled in the first round of the U.S. Open, carding an 8-over 78. He's tied for 144th place.

Mickelson was playing in the U.S. Open after being indefinitely suspended by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan a week ago. Mickelson has been runner-up at the U.S. Open a record six times. "I really enjoyed the test; I think it's just a spectacular golf course," Mickelson told reporters in the players' parking lot after the round. But then Mickelson yanked his tee shot into the thick rough on the right side on No. 12, needed two shots to get back to the fairway and carded a double-bogey 6 to drop to 7 over. Mickelson was one of 17 tour players who competed in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series event in London without a conflicting-event release. Playing for the first time in the U.S. since missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, Mickelson had bogeys on three of the first five holes and then four-putted from 12 feet for a double bogey on the par-3 sixth.

U.S. Open 2022: The Phil Mickelson haters were few but they were ... (GolfDigest.com)

Phil Mickelson would qualify as controversial in every conceivable way, even before he took on the PGA Tour and defected to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.

Then, he'll get a week off before heading to Pumpkin Ridge in Portland for the first U.S.-based LIV event at the end of the month. Curry's articulate thoughts on the Phil-to-LIV matter were quite the juxaposition with the next catcaller, who was positioned in one of the hospitality tents off 14 fairway and was clearly overserved. "The tour that was so incredibly good to him for 20-plus years, and he's completely tainted his legacy. His final score of eight-over 78 has him positioned in a tie for 144th, 12 shots off the lead of Adam Hadwin and just five shots shy of dead last. The tour would have taken care of him if he was really in that dire need." Phil's the one who is trying to take down the PGA Tour." "I thought he'd get booed out of the place, to be honest with you." Then, somewhat stunningly, came a real, live "boooo" in Mickelson's direction as he strolled to the par-3 sixth tee. Then again, this was the man's 52nd birthday, and this is the U.S. Open, which has caused him the most pain over the course of his three-decade career. Once they quieted, boo-er No. 2 let Mickelson know he was "dead to him." For the last 20 years and then some, he has been among the most beloved players in the sport. His Kiawah like pre-shot process was yielding Centurion-like results, but the Bostonians still opted for a positive-vibes-only approach.

U.S. Open 2022: Unlikely leaders, golf ball bandits, and six other ... (GolfDigest.com)

Here are the things that caught our eye—and caught us off guard—during the first round of the 2022 U.S. Open.

I recognized the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face," Rahm said laughing. Still, this is a guy who has lost to a total of four players over his past four U.S. Opens. And yet he got beaten by more than half the field on Thursday. Despite the bizarre situation, Rahm responded by making birdie to shoot 69 and put himself in great shape to defend his title. Oosthuizen, who finished T-2, solo second and T-3 in the final three majors of 2021, withdrew at this year’s Masters before finishing T-60 at the PGA, and now he’ll need a miracle to make the cut after opening with 77. You could say that the 39-year-old South African isn't LIVing at the top of major leaderboards anymore. The winner of the 2015 Memorial, Lingmerth has fallen to No. 592 in the Official World Golf Ranking. But he certainly didn’t play like that during a bogey-free 67. And Rahm thinks he knows who the culprits are. Look, the guy’s a PGA Tour winner and he finished T-9 at the Players Championship earlier this year. And that came 11 years ago at Congressional. But there he was on Thursday going out in a scorching four-under-par 31 and finishing at that number to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes. Remember when this guy was seemingly in the hunt at every major last year? The six-time major champ struggled from start to finish shooting an eight-over-par 78 that included a four-putt from 16 feet on No. 6. BROOKLINE, Mass. — Day 1 at the U.S. Open is in the books, and there were plenty of things that left us scratching our heads.

U.S. Open notebook: Wild drives, a stolen golf ball and happy finish ... (Sportsnet.ca)

Jon Rahm began his U.S. Open title defence with a 1-under 69, a solid score Thursday at The Country Club that ended with a par and a birdie.

"It really taught me to make a lot of birdies," he said. The South African was the seventh-to-last player to get into the first Korn Ferry Tour event in the Bahamas. He tied for 15th. "If that doesn't scream to you it's the Open," then nothing will, he said. "I think now I've finally this week probably started feeling the freedom," he said. Spieth had two pars, three birdies and four bogeys on the front nine. Rahm's first ball was in play, he hit wedge out of the rough to 12 feet and missed the birdie putt. The rough wasn't very thick and Rahm only had 125 yards to cover the bunker in front of the green. I recognized the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face," he said. Rahm got relief from the TV tent and good fortune kept coming his way when he took his drop. But he saw a marshal finally signaled the ball was safe. Rahm pulled his driver on the par-4 17th hole and said to his caddie, Adam Hayes, "That might be out-of-bounds." The second one was more of a hook.

Mickelson struggling early at U.S. Open, sits tied for 145th (Sportsnet.ca)

Phil Mickelson shot 8-over 78 and walked off the course tied for 145th in the 156-player field at the first round of the U.S. Open on Thursday.

Mickelson is only 13 months removed from a remarkable late-career surge — the PGA Championship he won last year at Kiawah at a record age of 50. When he mercifully tapped in for his double-bogey 5, he was 5 over with the meat of the golf course still ahead. It was right out of a Boston fan's playbook. This marked the sixth straight time he's failed to break par in the opening round of the U.S. Open. The quiet buzz spilling out of the grandstand and luxury suites grew louder as Happy Hour approached. Earlier, Mickelson had missed par saves from 7 feet on No. 1 and 8 feet on No. 3. And the next. Asked his brother and caddie, Tim, to take a look at the comebacker. He stopped and stared. He turned 52 on Thursday. He shot 8-over 78. He walked off the course tied for 145th in the 156-player field.

The more you do it, the more you get used to it.” They all got golf clubs, so it was the second U.S. Open I’ve played in, and the second time, no golf clubs.” He got it solved by Monday with help from some of those 38 million helpful souls: Canadians. Five holes in with no wind, defending champion Jon Rahm had himself a moment when, he said, “I was thinking, ‘We’re going to blow the roof off this place.’ ” Reigning British Open champion Collin Morikawa, a two-time major winner at 25, called it “gettable,” a word shelved if not condemned at most U.S. Opens. Both shot 1-under 69s. “This has been a year in the making, really,” Hadwin said. “It’s been eight years since I won a major, and I just want to get my hands on one again.” I wasn’t all-American. New names -- and Rory McIlroy -- top US Open leaderboard (Toronto Star)

BROOKLINE, Mass. (AP) — For one day at least, the U.S. Open was wide open.

“If that doesn’t scream to you it’s the Open,” then nothing will, he said. He took his drop and left himself a 12-foot birdie putt to finish with a 69. “But I’ll take the 4 and run any day of the week.” But he got up and down from the sand, making a 13-footer to save par. “Even though I’m standing up here slightly frustrated that I bogeyed the last, it’s a great start to the tournament,” he said. Johnson shot 68 to sit in a seven-way tie for seventh after 18 holes. “I never expect it to get easier,” he said. In his attempt to win a major for the third straight year, Collin Morikawa made the turn at 3 under but didn’t make another birdie. He missed the ninth green -- his 18th hole -- and settled for his only bogey of the round. Defending U.S. Open champion John Rahm also salvaged a 69 after driving wide left on the last two holes. But the best thing he can do for the legacy circuit is to keep winning. The other was four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who slammed and tossed aside his clubs during the round but also made enough shots with them to remain just one stroke off the lead.

This year's winner is still making a lot of money, as is par for the course for the U.S. Open.

The winner is going to take home $3.15 million. The Masters posted a reported $15 million in prize money, with Scottie Scheffler taking home $2.7 million for the win. The U.S. Open still boasts the biggest prize money payout, beating out the 2022 Masters, which paid out a total of $15 million. The winner takes an 18 percent of the total prize purse, which will be worth $3.15 million. Among the four majors, the U.S. Open is still king of the majors when it comes to prize money. Traditionally, the U.S. Open has yielded the highest payouts for the winner, and this year, that won't change: The winner will be taking home just north of $3 million at The Country Club.

2022 U.S. Open - Sights, sounds and best moments from the second ... (ESPN)

The opening round had Phil drama, club tosses and turkeys. What's ahead during the second round of the U.S. Open? We've got it covered.

He followed that with a bogey at the 11th and another at the 14th. Dustin Johnson (2 under) and James Piot (1 under) were the only ones among the group to break 70. Without a low score Friday, he is in danger of missing the cut. Two years ago, he made $5,750 on the All Pro Tour. He is also a volunteer assistant coach at Houston. But after making the turn at 6-under on Friday, MJ Daffue (pronounced "Duffey") has a lead over the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick and three others. Daffue, 33, was born in South Africa and played at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
