Microsoft’s Edge browser is using the same Chromium open-source code that Chrome has used since its inception. So ultimately, the browser that can most effectively balance security and ease of use will win users. Individuals can even contribute to the source code, thereby enhancing the software’s productivity, reliability and security. What has given Chrome such a leg-up in the browser market? Being open source means the software is publicly available, and anyone can inspect the source code that runs behind it. After all, it was only in 1993 that Tim Berners-Lee, the father of the web, released the first public web browser (aptly called WorldWideWeb).

C’est la raison pour laquelle Microsoft a donc intégré un mode IE dans son navigateur Edge. « Pour certaines versions de Windows actuellement prises en charge et utilisées dans des environnements critiques, nous continuerons à prendre en charge Internet Explorer sur ces versions jusqu’à ce qu’elles ne soient plus prises en charge », révèle Lyndersay. « Il s’agit notamment de toutes les versions LTSC de Windows 10 actuellement prises en charge (y compris IoT) et de toutes les versions de Windows Server, ainsi que de Windows 10 China Government Edition, Windows 8.1 et Windows 7 avec les mises à jour de sécurité étendues (ESU) ». Il y aura toutefois une exception importante. Le géant des logiciels va bientôt lancer une migration automatique des utilisateurs actuels d’Internet Explorer vers Microsoft Edge. « Au cours des prochains mois, l’ouverture d’Internet Explorer redirigera progressivement les utilisateurs vers notre nouveau navigateur moderne, Microsoft Edge avec le mode IE. Les utilisateurs verront toujours l’icône d’Internet Explorer sur leurs appareils (comme dans la barre des tâches ou dans le menu Démarrer) mais s’ils cliquent pour ouvrir Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge s’ouvrira à la place avec un accès facile au mode IE. À terme, Internet Explorer sera désactivé de manière permanente dans le cadre d’une future mise à jour de Windows, et les icônes Internet Explorer sur les appareils des utilisateurs seront alors supprimées », explique Sean Lyndersay, directeur général de Microsoft Edge Enterprise.

Après son lancement, Explorer avait rapidement supplanté le premier navigateur majeur de l’histoire d’internet, Netscape, au point de peser plus de 90 % du secteur au début des années 2000.
