Canada scrapping COVID-19 vaccine mandate for travellers. Is it too ... (Globalnews.ca)

Starting June 20, domestic and outbound international travellers, by flight or rail, will no longer be required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

A study based on data from Ontario published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in April, showed that attack rates among those who are vaccinated against COVID-19 were highest when they were randomly mixed within the unvaccinated subpopulation. The mandate, which had been in place since October 2021, will be lifted on June 20. This is because vaccines can not only help prevent infection, they can also clear the infection more quickly, making it less likely for an infected person to pass the virus on to others and reducing the likelihood of virus replication, said Khan. Marianne Levitksy, an occupational hygienist and adjunct lecturer at the University of Toronto, said it is not a good idea to be lifting vaccine mandates amid the spread of the highly infectious Omicron variant and subvariants. Omar Khan, a professor of biomedical engineering and immunology at the University of Toronto, said while the new policy is in line with current COVID-19 trends in the country, there is also a risk attached to it. The lifting of COVID-19 vaccine mandates for travellers in Canada has come at the right time as cases are declining, experts say, but they stressed the need to continue masking on trains and planes to prevent future waves.

PHAC recommends that travellers consult a health-care professional or visit a travel health clinic at least six weeks before their trip. It also cautions that those who go abroad could have limited access to appropriate care if they become ill and could face delays returning home. At least 123 have been confirmed in Canada. The agency says travellers may be subject to isolation or other measures to limit the spread of the virus upon arrival at their destination. It's rare to see outbreaks of the virus outside of West and Central Africa, but cases have cropped up around the world in recent weeks. The federal government is also lifting vaccination requirements for federally regulated workers, allowing airline and airport employees on unpaid leave because of their vaccination status to return to work.

Jamaica has also never required travellers to be vaccinated against COVID-19. However, if you have proof of vaccination or a negative PCR or antigen test taken 72 hours before arrival, you can be exempted from the random test. There are no vaccine mandates for Canadians wishing to vacation in Cuba and unvaccinated travellers won't need to provide proof of a COVID-19 test or quarantine. Upon arrival, travellers may be subject to random COVID-19 testing. Travellers arriving in from an "orange" country, or a country not on the "green" list, must present a "compelling reason to justify the need to come to France" and may be subject to a random test upon arrival. While travel restrictions were eased in February, unvaccinated Canadians visiting France still need to provide proof of a negative test taken prior to arrival. Unvaccinated travellers can visit the U.K. without needing to quarantine, take a COVID-19 test or face any other restrictions. Other countries may impose quarantine or testing requirements for unvaccinated tourists.
