What's Next for John Gibson? (The Hockey News)

There are questions regarding John Gibson's future in Anaheim, and if he is moved, there's more than a few suitors that could become a good fit.

Throw in the Toronto Maple Leafs, who don't have a clear answer regarding Jack Campbell's future, and there are going to be some high-profile partners this season. The Buffalo Sabres also have three first-round picks they can use to make a move if they can make things work. They've got the second overall pick this year and a handful of other valuable assets they can move to bring Gibson in if they think he's the right option. Regardless, the team needs to make at least one decision with Mikko Koskinen jetting off to Switzerland, and, at the right price, Gibson could be a fantastic fit for Oil Country. The team's early success this season was a bit of a surprise, but the goal was growing with Trevor Zegras, Troy Terry, Jamie Drysdale and company. Sportsnet's Nick Alberga reported on Monday that Gibson is open to being dealt from the Ducks this off-season.

An All-Star for the third time last season, Gibson finished with an 18-26-11 record, 3.19 goals-against average and .904 save percentage. He has won 166 games with the franchise, with only Jean-Sebastien Giguère above him on the club’s all-time goalie wins list. Gibson is entering the fourth year of an eight-year contract extension he signed with the Ducks in 2018. When I signed my extension in Anaheim however many years ago, I said I’d be honored to play in the same city and be a part of the same organization my whole career. He did express his belief in the young core that’s being assembled with Trevor Zegras, Troy Terry and Jamie Drysdale leading the way and Mason McTavish, the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft, potentially joining them next season. Sportsnet’s Nick Alberga tweeted Monday that the 28-year-old is open to being dealt and there’s a “belief out of Anaheim that he’s informed the club of that.”

Should The Capitals Try To Trade For John Gibson? (Stars and Sticks)

The Washington Capitals need goaltending help. For the past two seasons they have gone young and homegrown in Ilya Samsonov and Vitek Vanecek.

The Washington Capitals need help in the goalie department. If the Capitals wanted to trade for Gibson and Anaheim wanted a goalie back, great news! When you put a good team in front of him he can be one of the best in the league. Are the Capitals looking for a backup? Looking at the market there are not a ton of options there. However, we need to remember that the Ducks have not been a good team for some time now. Gibson’s High Danger Goals Saved Above Average is a -1.53, pretty good considering the amount of shots he sees. The other thing to note is Gibson does not have great stats over the past three seasons. Honestly, that isn’t bad for a sure fire starter in the NHL. That being said, if the Capitals have to spend to upgrade their skaters a little bit does that leave enough room for Gibson? Probably not. Samsonov has not been good in the past two seasons. If you’re going to make moves for skaters there is a good chunk of that gone. Since he was basically forced to be NHL ready at the start of the shortened 2021 season, Vanecek has played in 79 games.

Maple Leafs Should Consider Gibson Trade For the Right Price (The Hockey Writers)

The Toronto Maple Leafs may have a question to answer in the crease, and if Jack Campbell doesn't stay, they should check in on John Gibson.

Gibson could very well be that goalie for the Maple Leafs if a fresh start proves in his favour, and while it would certainly be a massive “if,” it’s an if that could potentially reap massive rewards for the Maple Leafs. The reality is, the Maple Leafs are going to have to deal with the likes of Vasilevskiy and Shesterkin as long as they’re in the Eastern Conference. If they’re not going to have Campbell between the pipes, I would much prefer to have Gibson versus some low-cost career backup who’s looking for a shot to become a full-time starter. NHL Insider Chris Johnston did a spot on TSN 1050’s Leafs Lunch to gauge the situation, and stated that he believes the Maple Leafs are more likely to go after a reclamation project-type of goaltender that they can get for cheap. But if he leaves, and the Maple Leafs are left with Mrazek as their best option heading into next season, they should target the goalie who’s proven himself in this league, despite what the risk in acquiring him might be. Alex Hobson is a third year broadcasting student at Niagara College. He has been writing about sports since 2015 and has been with The Hockey Writers since October of 2020. He did a nosedive towards the end of the 2021-22 season, as did the Ducks as a team. His SV% has hovered just above the .900 mark for the past three seasons, and his GAA in the high 2.00s and low 3.00s. Although he was one of if not the best goaltender in the league for that stretch between 2016-19, that was also four years ago. In 2016-17, Gibson backstopped the Ducks to a playoff berth as the Pacific Division champions, and he started each game of the playoffs before a lower-body injury in Game 5 of the Western Conference Final removed him from the series. There was nothing special about Carey Price’s .901 SV% or his minus-7.93 GSAx during the regular season last year, and yet, he ended up backstopping a Montreal Canadiens team that finished below .500 to a Stanley Cup Final. Gibson’s tenure as a regular NHL goalie began in 2015-16, and this was also the start of the best stretch of his career. Much of Gibson’s poor play can be attributed to the Ducks entering their rebuild stage, but fans have to take into consideration his play by itself. With the Ducks having missed the playoffs four seasons in a row now, Gibson’s numbers have taken a dip.

New Jersey Devils: Finding 3 John Gibson Trades That Make Sense (Pucks and Pitchforks)

The New Jersey Devils need a goalie, and there are rumors that John Gibson could be available. What would it take for the Devils to get him?

That second-round pick has a lot of value, and it probably pushes the Ducks over the edge to make the deal. The Devils have an interesting proposition for Anaheim. Not only do they have a bevy of picks and prospects to choose from, but they also have a goalie who might be salvageable himself. They are also giving the Ducks two draft picks to make it a little more worth their while. For the Ducks to trade Gibson, they have to find the right move with some high-upside pieces. What would it take for the Devils to get John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks? They want the best of the best and nothing else.

New allegations against Deshaun Watson ups the ante for the NFL A total of 26 women have now come forward to accuse Watson of misconduct. The MLB has done a great job of telling the post-mortem story of African-American inclusion in its ranks, but it is time to raise that relevancy by telling more of the backstory in greater depth. As if this weren’t enough, Watson is now facing two more lawsuits from women claiming inappropriate behavior on the part of the three-time Pro Bowler. “Legal woes continue for former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson as attorney Tony Buzbee is in the process of filing two more lawsuits against the embattled NFL star…The amount of accusers is rising after more women come forward, claiming that Watson had inappropriate contact with them during massage therapy sessions.” Report on new Deshaun Watson lawsuits from KPRC 2 in Houston Prior to this, two other women had come forward to file suits against Watson — bringing the total to 24 at that time. At a time when African-American participation in the game is at a post-integration all-time low, further exposure of the heritage of the game is greatly needed.
