The new champion also earned some star power with his style of fighting that leaves him in vulnerable positions.
The fact that Jedrzejczyk hadn't fought in two years seemed to catch up with her. Two of the three judges agreed that Shevchenko had won the second round, which opened the door for her to rally in the championship rounds by sweeping both on all three cards to steal the victory. The swing round in this case appeared to be Round 2 when Santos continued her success on the ground. Jedrzejczyk's five consecutive title defenses from 2015-17 remains the most successful reign in 115-pound history. Shevchenko, who briefly secured a triangle choke attempt on the ground, got the better of the standup that round and was also much busier offensively while her back was stuck to the ground. In just his third UFC fight, the 29-year-old native of the Czech Republic is now a champion. Either way, it's a fight fans won't soon forget as each warrior was willing to persevere through extreme damage and fatigue until an uncharacteristic mistake from Teixeira in Round 5 led to his heartbreaking defeat while ahead on two of three scorecards (with the third one even). This fight had a shocking ending similar to Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen I yet was much sloppier and frenetic than most great title bouts as technique largely went out the window in this veritable street fight. But it's the incredible intangibles he employed in rallying to victory that will keep them coming back to the turnstiles to watch him compete. Meanwhile, in the co-main event, women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko was forced to rally and hang on for a disputed split-decision win against Taila Santos. From an action standpoint alone, Prochazka's submission win with just 28 seconds to go in the final round easily belongs alongside Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson I, Zhang-Jedrzejczyk I and Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard II as the best championship tilts in the 29 years UFC has been in business. Thanks to his willingness to so often go against the grain of what is considered the orthodox norm in this sport, it's very likely no one will.
Prochazka beat Teixeira with a rear-naked choke in the fifth round to win the light heavyweight title.
“Glover is a true warrior. He has won 13 straight bouts. It was Prochazka’s first victory by submission in UFC and his first since 2014.

Prochazka weathered the storm, but with a minute remaining still seemed just 60 seconds or less from his first loss in 6 ½ years. Unbeknownst to the combatants, Teixeira was in the driver’s seat on the scorecards entering the final five minutes. “From my side, it was [a] horrible fight, [a] horrible performance,” Prochazka later told reporters. But Prochazka survived and thrived, dishing out pain of his own in a round that reasonably could have been scored either way. Fighting with urgency in the third of five frames, Prochazka carved up the champion whom has long hailed from Danbury, Conn., since immigrating as a young man. For 24 minutes, 32 seconds, Prochazka and Teixeira pushed one another to the brink.

If that does indeed come to fruition, she would likely return as a Flyweight despite the fact that she came up short against Valentina Shevchenko. If this truly is the end for Jedrzejczyk, it’s not exactly the way the striker envisioned her stellar career coming to a halt after a blistering start to her UFC championship run, as well as her overall MMA journey. Now, Prochazka begins his championship run with a huge target on his back after earning his second world title in a major MMA organization. After five rounds of back and forth action, Prochazka pulled a rabbit out of his hat by securing a rear-naked choke in the waning moments of the fifth and final round.

I want to be a businesswoman. I want to be a mom. Moments earlier, Shevchenko (23-3) was tested from the opening round by Santos, who won four straight fights to earn her first UFC title shot. The Chinese veteran left no doubt the second time, ending the bout with the spectacular spinning strike that ended it. Both fighters were bleeding from cuts in the third round, and Prochazka also wobbled Teixeira in the middle rounds before his dramatic finish. Prochazka survived nearly five rounds of consistent punishment from the 42-year-old Teixeira, who became a first-time UFC champion at 205 pounds late last year.
Immediately after UFC 275, Jiri Prochazka was targeted by five top contenders who took aim on social media.
That’s what I think Ankalaev and I both thought was probably going to happen. Streaking contender Magomed Ankalaev and Anthony Smith are set to square off July 30 at UFC 277. Anthony Smith (36-16 MMA, 13-8 UFC) Magomed Ankalaev (17-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) Glover Teixeira (33-8 MMA, 16-6 UFC) Prochazka and Teixeira competed in a highly entertaining, back-and-forth brawl with momentum shifts aplenty.

“For the next fight, I swear I will be another fighter. But he had the power enough to open me, and that was very bad and it was right after to smile at him.” Just do the things that are effective to defeat the opponent. That fight was tough, and it was not easy.” “I wanted to show him his ground-and-pound, he had no power to end me in there. But for a fighter, I like to fight clean.”

I made a decision that I was going to become a superstar and I did that and I’m proud of myself. I just want to be around.” “The time when I was broke and that time, I felt I had no options – I had to quit,” Jedrzejczyk explained. “I’m just the girl from the hood. I’m planning on going to International Fight Week and London and Paris and be around. I just saw getting closer to the mat, and I felt bells ringing in my head. We need to keep on moving in our lives and fully enjoy the rollercoaster.” I started traveling when I was 17, I used to live in Thailand, in Holland and in the [United] States, it’s been more than six years from the time I moved to the States, I’ve been on the road. I give as much as I can and I get as much as I can the same way but now it’s time to fully really enjoy it. I want to go on vacation. “It was just the moment,” Jedrzejczyk said about her decision to retire during the UFC 275 post-fight press conference. I’ve been doing this most of my life so it’s time to really, fully enjoy.”
A remarkable career has come to an end for Joanna Jedrzejczyk, who lost in devastating fashion at UFC 275.
I give as much as I can, and I get as much as I can in the same way, but now it’s time to fully enjoy it.” I want to be a business woman. I want to be a mom. … Dreams are coming true, but you have to work hard and really believe. I approach so much and honestly I haven’t had the time to think about how big my legacy is. After a two-year break, Jedrzejczyk returned in Singapore where she suffered a knockout loss in her highly anticipated rematch with Zhang Weili.
Here's what Joanna Jedrzejczyk had to say after a disappointing second round loss to Weili Zhang led her to retire from her long career as fighter.
I have to sit and think about what I have achieved. In the future I want to be the best manager I can be. “I always want to be remembered as one of the greatest and I will,” Jedrzejczyk concluded. Of course she was landing these elbows and punches, but I was focused on bringing the fight up.” “I want people to look at the athletes that are winning or losing as hard workers. In the middle of the road before I hit the Octagon, I was sober already.” “Of course I had it in the back of my head, maybe there was one day a year ago where maybe if something happened I might retire. And I knew I was KO’d and I was like okay, it’s all over. It is what it is, I got caught but it was a good one. I got kicked to the back of the head and I have a big bruise, but all good, man.” In kickboxing and Muay Thai she went 27-3 and was the IFMA World Championship gold medalist five years in a row. Following the defeat, an emotional Jedrzejczyk laid her gloves down in the ring and announced she was retiring from the sport.

Prochazka never even got his legs around Teixeira -- in grappling terms, he never got his hooks in -- during the opportune, unorthodox choke. Prochazka landed some punches from the top, but Teixeira somehow swept and took Prochazka's back before the end of the round. Prochazka took that momentum into the second round and landed some big punches, a knee and ground-and-pound with Teixeira on the mat. Back on the feet, both men landed hard shots, with Teixeira getting the better of things. But back on the feet, Teixeira caught Prochazka pressuring forward wildly with a left hook that dropped him. "He was hitting me with body shots that took my gas away," Teixeira said. Teixeira looked early like he would run over Prochazka with his superior wrestling and grappling. Judge Michael Bell had it 38-38 going into the fifth round, judge Ben Cartlidge had Teixeira up 39-37, and Clemens Warner had Teixeira ahead 38-37. Coming into the fight, ESPN had Teixeira ranked No. 8 on its list of the best pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world. Prochazka is the first male fighter to win an undisputed UFC title within his first three fights since Brock Lesnar in 2008, according to ESPN Stats & Information. "It was a true war," Prochazka said. Teixeira gave it all back and then some.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk, perhaps the most accomplished strawweight in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, is calling it a career at 34 years old.

Taila Santos will undergo surgery to repair a broken orbital, according to manager Tiago Okamura, who shared photos of the injury.
The street credit came with a price, though, as a clash of heads caused immediate swelling and visible injury to the right side of Santos’ face in Round 4. Her timetable for recovery is not yet known, though broken orbital bones typically take approximately three weeks to heal. On Sunday, Santos’ manager, Tiago Okamura,of On The Road Management, informed MMA Junkie that his fighter suffered a broken orbital as a result of the collision.

No way. No way. No f*cking way!
Former strawweight champion calls it a career following knockout loss in Singapore.
The bout is also a surefire addition to the UFC Hall of Fame's "Fight Wing" in the very near future. I want to be a businesswoman. I want to be a mom.
UFC may want to pull the trigger on Prochazka vs. Teixeira 2 before it is too late.
Either way, the door is open for Shevchenko. The women's flyweight champion has expressed her desire to fight for the bantamweight belt by year's end. This might just be the frontrunner for Fight of the Year but they may not have two years to run it back as Zhang and Jededrzejczyk did. It may not have been an awe-inspiring, dominant launching pad to a super-fight, but the reality is that women's flyweight is hurting for fresh contenders. Between the insanity of Jiri Prochazka vs. Glover Teixeira, Valentina Shevchenko suffering the closest scare of her title reign, and Zhang Weili retiring ...
The UFC has stuck with Matthews through his ups and downs for more than the past eight years — it feels as if that patience is finally about to be rewarded. It’ll be well deserved, and there likely won’t be a dry eye in the house. It took a mighty effort — as well as a fortuitous clash of heads — for the UFC’s flyweight queen to get past Santos at UFC 275. And she held up her end of the bargain. Nonetheless, Shevchenko stands tall still on this Sunday morning as the owner of the most consecutive title defenses for any female champion in UFC history — and for the first time in years, she has several intriguing options awaiting her. And even if Tate falls to Murphy, UFC president Dana White has spoken openly of finally giving Shevchenko the chance to pursue two-division glory. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good, and Shevchenko was both in the championship rounds — though if not for the head butt that swelled Santos’ eye shut and shattered her orbital bone, Shevchenko seemed to be en route to a monster upset courtesy of the Brazilian’s masterful game plan of takedowns, back control, and surprising physicality. Teixeira is the definition of the latter. For even the best UFC champions, what happened on Saturday is inevitable: Stick around the mountaintop long enough and eventually everyone stumbles into a bad night. Light heavyweight used to be the glamour division of the UFC. Somewhere along the way, that stopped being the case — it’s still not even true after UFC 275’s theatrics. Instead, the Czech Republic crowned its first UFC champion, the light heavyweight division crowned its new samurai king, and the MMA world crowned its new “Fight of the Year” front-runner. Prochazka is the spiritual successor to Tony Ferguson I’ve been waiting for and it’s fantastic.
In the co-main event, Valentina Shevchenko (23-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC) faced the toughest test of her women's flyweight title reign. Brazilian challenger Taila Santos ...
