It took until the final frame for the majors to come. Hamilton would score the first of the game with a 71-yard touchdown by Steven Dunbar from Dane Evans.

Lauther would make it four for four with a 39-yard field goal to put the home team up by six. Hamilton would make the most on the opportunity, when Evans found Steven Dunbar at the back of the end zone for a touchdown. As a result of the turnover, Saskatchewan’s offence would come away with a 13-yard field goal by Brett Lauther. As Hamilton looked to take back the momentum, Derrick Moncrief had other ideas with an interception at Hamilton’s 40-yard line. A successful two point convert put the home team up by seven. The game was close thanks in large part to a solid defensive effort. “He’s incredible and he has been money ever since I’ve been here,” Fajardo said. “Then Na’Ty said, ‘Let’s go party in Pilsner.’ We had to get up in there and turn it on.” “We needed a spark on offence.” Saskatchewan also forced the Tiger-Cats into committing five turnovers, compared to three by Riders. “Our defence is special,” Fajardo said.

On the first play after the ensuing kick-off, Derrick Moncrief picked off Evans at the Hamilton 40-yard line and got to the Tiger-Cats' 1-yard line before he was pushed out of bounds by the Hamilton quarterback. Charleston Highes would recover the ball at the Hamilton 45, and moved it up two yards, but an illegal block penalty brought it back to the Hamilton 53. Then, he found Kian Schaffer-Baker in the end zone from 20 yards out, giving the Riders their first touchdown of the game, and putting them up 21-13. The Tiger-Cats would tie things up before the end of the first quarter, with the teams switching sides at a 3-3 deadlock. The Riders would start out slow, having only a 6-3 lead at halftime, before pouring things on in the fourth quarter, scoring 18 points en route to a 30-13 victory. The Riders' defence would stand tall and were also benefited by a holding penalty that negated a touchdown.

11 thoughts on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats' season-opening loss to the ... (3downnation.com)

Here were the results of the first five plays for the Ticats on Saturday: an incomplete pass that was tipped at the line of scrimmage, a Dane Evans sack-fumble ...

It is nice to see that the CFL has a much more reasonable rule on the matter. In the other nine contests against the Riders, which includes the 2013 Grey Cup, Hamilton has lost by a combined score of 272-124. The fumble out of the back or side of the end zone is essentially treated as a touchback. The team brought back Don Jackson and Sean Thomas-Erlington this offseason and after Jackson provided a spark a year ago, it felt natural to be excited for what was to come in 2022. The switch was short-lived, however, as Saxelid left the game in the second quarter after sustaining an injury. Evans also let his frustrations show, slamming the ball on the ground after one of the six sacks he was forced to endure. Thankfully for the Ticats, their coverage units were good, because they got a lot of work on Saturday night. Evans never looked comfortable and spent the majority of his time on the field running for his life. However, one thing I think we can probably all agree on is that Fajardo should have been taken out of the game. That was the year the Tabbies started off 0-8 before Kent Austin stepped aside for June Jones. It was a season to forget and the last time the Ticats missed the playoffs. He was truly awful in his first start of the season, going 18-of-28 for 222 yards one touchdown, two interceptions and two lost fumbles. Hamilton did not get their initial first down of the game until their fifth series and didn’t get their second until halfway through the second quarter.

Post-game Recap and Analysis of Hamilton Tiger-Cats 13 ... (CFL News Hub)

Coming into Saturday's game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Saskatchewan Roughriders you could make a case that these were very similar to one another.

Improving the running game will be a major factor in whether or not the Tiger-Cats will be able to become more effective on offense. The offensive line, the running backs, and the play-calling will all need to be re-evaluated and adjusted if this element of the Tiger-Cats offense will improve significantly. The answer is no, the Tiger-Cats were not able to create any game-breaking plays by scoring a punt return or kick return touchdown. With this in mind, we will take a look at the metrics that we identified that would allow the Tiger-Cats to be successful in this game by looking at the results of our 5 Growling Questions. This will be a significant problem going forward in 2022, and this is the primary problem the Tiger-Cats will need to solve as soon as possible. Coming into the game, the Tiger-Cats secondary was viewed as one of the best defensive units in the CFL. After this game, it is still true that this defensive backfield is very good.
