Tampa Bay Lightning reach third consecutive Stanley Cup Final with ... (USA TODAY)

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos scored twice as the two-time defending champions advance to face Colorado Avalanche in Stanley Cup Final.

"He gave us a chance to win every night and we got outchanced in a lot of the games, but he was outstanding. The defenseman, who is a Norris Trophy finalist for the fifth consecutive season, grabbed his head and broke his stick as he returned to the bench. Lafrenière started alongside Mika Zibanejad and Vatrano and Filip Chytil was on a line with Chris Kreider and Barclay Goodrow, though the lines changed up later. ... We know that everyone in our room plays a huge part in our success." We’re going to the Finals again and have a chance to do something special.” Shesterkin complained but the goal survived a review.

When the Rangers organization sent out the now-infamous letter to fans in 2018, advising their supporters that they would be trading familiar faces and embarking on a rebuild, it was thought that a long period of sustained losing might be next. And the Toronto Maple Leafs either need to invest in Jack Campbell or spend their money on a higher-priced starting goalie. The Edmonton Oilers have only so much room to try to fit Evander Kane and a new goalie into their plans. They also have the option of bringing back RFA Sammy Blais, a nice offseason addition from the St. Louis Blues that tore his ACL and was limited to just 14 games this season. Through their comeback series wins against Pittsburgh and Carolina (including wins in five consecutive elimination games before Saturday’s loss), they have developed the kind of resilience and character that is needed to win a championship. The Blueshirts’ management will have the ability to either keep their trade deadline acquisitions or add to the roster in other ways. The Rangers also have a great prospect pool, and they have been rumored to be willing to part with some of those assets to go big-game hunting in the offseason. Even with a tenfold increase to Fox’s cap hit starting next year (from his entry-level $925,000 to $9.5 million average annual value), the investment in the D-corps is more than manageable. The forward group has the aforementioned Kid Line, with only Kakko needing an extension, and he’s a restricted free agent without arbitration rights who won’t command a big pay day this offseason. Their ‘Kid Line’ consists of three first-round picks who are 20 (Alexis Lafreniere), 21 (Kaapo Kakko) and 22 (Filip Chytil). Those three have started to blossom into threatening offensive players, and there remains lots of upside in their games. The New York Rangers are not going to win the Stanley Cup this year. For starters, they have a very young team that still has lots of room to improve.

“The playoffs at times can be a war of attrition, and I think in the end the layoff helped us. If there is one takeaway this team needs to learn it’s find a way to take the opportunity presented and close teams out. He tried gutting it out, but was visibly not a 100% and didn’t play in the third period. It’s a lot of hockey in a short amount of time,” Jacob Trouba explained. Simply put, even for a young team like the Blueshirts, it was just too much hockey in a short amount of time. The Rangers struggled to score in this series past the second period of Game 3.

Stamkos Scores Twice, Lightning Beat Rangers 2-1 in Game 6 (NBC New York)

Steven Stamkos scored two goals and the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning are headed to the Stanley Cup Final for the third straight year ...

He made some unbelievable saves to keep them in it, but I think I just felt kind of a calming presence because of the group,” Stamkos said. "They found a way to get the big goal at the big time.” They are trying to become the first to win three straight championships since the New York Islanders claimed four in a row from 1980-83. NOTES: The Lightning played again without forward Brayden Point, who’s missed 10 games since suffering a lower-body injury during Tampa Bay’s Game 7 victory over Toronto in the first round. “And the fact that they they have every excuse in the world to not win because nobody would fault them by saying hey, you won one, you won two and to come back and and go for a third. He was the NHL’s leading goal scorer the previous two postseasons. “It was just one of those nights where whether it was the next shift after, whether I scored or someone else scored, it was just a feeling that we were going to get it done.” “I was just confident in our group that we would find a way, whether it was in regulation or was in overtime. But we played well, we battled hard, we had a chance to win all those games," Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “You’re still not at the end of our goal, but in saying that this group is pretty amazing and pretty special.” He gave us a chance to win every night. That was the feeling we had from puck drop.”

The Rangers Are Done Being Underdogs (New York Magazine)

The New York Rangers were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the NHL's Eastern Conference Final. As the Rangers' surprise playoff run comes ...

The Rangers played more than 1,200 minutes in this postseason, but the single definingminute came in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Lightning. It may not sound like much to a casual observer of the sport, but in that minute, the Rangers kept the Lightning pinned in their zone with a series of keep-ins and corralled loose pucks. But part of the fun of this team was the feeling that all of this wasn’t supposed to be happening yet — that the rebuilding process was getting results sooner than it was supposed to. The Rangers will enter next season with the weight of expectations for the first time in years. But the thing with a season like this is you only get one of them. But the Rangers weren’t supposed to even make the playoffs this season in the eyes of many experts. They won the first two games of the Eastern Conference Final while playing their best hockey of the year, then jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 3 before Tampa Bay took command and never let up.

They had to go through growing pains – emphasis on pain – just like the Rangers are going through at the moment. Before ascending to the heights they’ve been at for three years running, the Lightning had their share of letdowns and underachievements. They’ll learn from their experience and be much more of a post-season threat next year.

New York Rangers Extend Vitali Kravtsov (prohockeyrumors.com)

The Rangers have signed RW Vitali Kravtsov to a one-year, one-way $875k deal.

Given the relatively uncertain state of the Rangers’ right wingers going into next season, Kravtsov could have a strong opportunity to earn an NHL job and hold onto it. Kravtsov originally left for the KHL at the start of this season after failing to make the Rangers’ team out of training camp, and his reportedly strained relationship with Rangers GM Chris Drury was thought to be a factor in creating his steadfast resistance towards continuing his development with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. While that resistance to taking the developmental path the organization likely preferred for him has made him a bit of a controversial prospect, Kravtsov’s potential is undeniable. Dan Milstein’s Gold Star Hockey announced today that winger Vitali Kravtsov signed a one-year, one-way contract extension with the New York Rangers. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the one-year deal carries an $875k cap hit, which is a decrease from the $925k cap hit he carried on his entry-level deal as a top-ten pick.

Rangers Agree To One Year, $875000 Contract With Vitali Kravtsov (Blueshirt Banter)

After seeing their 2021-22 campaign come to a close last night, the Rangers' focus has already turned to getting ready for the 2022-23 season.

Kravtsov was a restricted free agent following the expiration of his entry level contract in a year he was slated to be a major part of New York’s youth movement. With a laundry list’s worth of decisions to be made before free agency begins on July 13th, Chris Drury has reportedly began the offseason with an internal signing: Either way, Kravtsov is now under contract for next season, and the Rangers’ offseason has officially begun.
