Not a great deal for Neuman, I have to say, but I suppose the threat of Homelander lasering her and her whole family was a significant factor. The idea of Homelander as the head of Vought is intriguing to me; the more power he has, the more he has to lose, which should make his fall all the more delicious. (It’s still not the most memorable use of a dildo in the episode.) What unites this story and the other main story of the episode is the shared focus on team dynamics. I call the reveal a bombshell because it is shocking — this season has slowly set Alex up as a potential love interest, even in this episode, but his life (and story arc) got cut short. Hopefully giving Hughie (and maybe others?) V24 will be the shot in the arm (pun intended) these stories need in the second half of the season. So much is happening, but there’s little time to dwell on the emotional significance of these revelations. But it is even more distressing to the group that the typically by-the-books Hughie took the temp V, too — it comes out when he nakedly teleports a few yards forward, punching a hole through a man’s torso. All of these stories come together nicely at the climax, when the Boys break into the lab and security inevitably arrives for a big shootout. It’s a handy bit of strategic sentimentality on Butcher’s part, but there’s a deeper implication: Butcher plays the hard-ass authoritarian role when shit needs to get done, while Mother’s Milk is the real glue, a moral compass who can hold the group together like he did with his platoon. It’s only minutes later that Nina has leveraged her Kremlin connections to find the lab they’re looking for, and all of a sudden the elusive Soldier Boy–killing weapon seems shockingly attainable. After a few installments gradually reuniting the Boys and developing their goals, both individually and as a group, “Glorious Five Year Plans” gives us our first real Boys mission of the season.

Season 3, Episode 4 of The Boys continues to offer up some truly impressive and outrageous scenes while adding to the tension of future events.

Of course, the show does once again offer a glimmer of hope for those that are thinking there might be a way to really take Homelander down. The series continues doing an outstanding job making it seem as if he's naive in specific ways, only to eventually divulge that he's one step ahead of everyone else. The fact that Edgar is devoting the resources of Vought to trying to knock the superhero down a peg seems like it could be a step in the right direction. In some regards, it appears that things are actually unfolding in a way that could end Homelander's reign of terror. Meanwhile, Hughie is trying to find a way to no longer work for Victoria Neuman after discovering that she has superpowers and has killed an awful lot of people. That's really not much of a spoiler as it's something that tends to happen a couple of times in every episode.

Just how far would you be willing to go to stop a maniacal Supe like Homelander?

Whether there will be time remains to be seen – there’s no knowing where this mission’s going now that a certain someone’s on the scene. The writers also struggle with how to balance the show’s plethora of characters. It’s Anthony Starr’s performance as the unhinged hero that leaves me at a crossroads: I want Butcher to succeed, yet it’s hard to imagine this show without Homelander’s omniscient threat lingering over them. 'Glorious Five Year Plan' tracks Billy Butcher’s (Karl Urban) team as they travel to Russian to find a mysterious weapon that could take down the maniacal leader of the Seven. Even he can’t stop Butcher from falling further wayward due to Temp V, the effects of which are more than just some green vomit.

The latest episode of The Boys holds nothing back as hamsters, limited edition dildoes, and strongman punches ensure there's no shortage of violence.

Hughie for Starlight, Starlight for Hughie, Butcher for Ryan, Frenchie for Kimiko, Homelander for himself, The Deep (Chace Crawford) for his spot in The Seven, A-Train (Jessie T. Usher) for his late-stage activism — Kripke's packing the powder keg even tighter, which is already bursting at the bolts. Edgar is still the colder son-of-a-gun in the room for all of Homelander's physical threats and American nightmarishness. Both The Seven and The Boys are in shambles under Homelander and Butcher. "Glorious Five Year Plan" ruptures relationships between Butcher's roster that M.M. warns may be irreparable, while Starlight and Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) gear up for a mutiny with the aid of Butcher's secret weapon (yet to be obtained). Characters endure soul-crushing tortures, have their failures rubbed in their faces, are picked back upright, then shoved right back to the ground — and yet The Boys isn't about hopelessness. Between The Boys opening Season 3 with Termite graphically exploding through his lover's penis, the impending "Herogasm" in Episode 6, and the death by dildoes in "Glorious Five Year Plan," showrunner Eric Kripke's putting the "O" in "superhero" these days. The difference here, and what The Boys is doing better by the episode, is that it emphasizes the consequences of violent attacks and the emotional responses to the corpses that pile sky high. The Boys asserts itself as far more than a display of barbaric acts of random violence carried out by the world's most sadistic anti-heroes, which adds an element of engagement to Season 3 that wasn't as prominent thus far.
