A New York City jury found Kelly guilty of racketeering and multiple other counts last year at a sex-trafficking trial that was seen as a signature moment in the #MeToo movement. Kelly used his “fame, money and popularity” to systematically “prey upon children and young women for his own sexual gratification”, prosecutors wrote in the filing.

Wednesday's court filing is by no means the only legal trouble Kelly faces. In Wednesday's memo, prosecutors also wrote about the wedding, which was later annulled with the help of Aaliyah's family. They continued that Kelly's "actions were brazen, manipulative, controlling and coercive.

At the time, his lawyer called the accusations “beyond absurd.” R. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to Illinois federal child pornography and obstruction of justice charges. The legal document also highlights Kelly’s “callous disregard” for his many victims, alerting the judge that he “is unlikely to be deterred from further sexually abusing and exploiting children and others.” With a sentence in excess of 25 years, per the Post, the prosecutors state the musician may not be released from prison until he is in his 70s. The U.S. attorney’s office went on to say that Kelly has shown “no remorse for any of his conduct,” adding, “Indeed, the defendant’s decades of crime appear to have been fueled by narcissism and a belief that his musical talent absolved him of any need to conform his conduct—no matter how predatory, harmful, humiliating or abuse to other—to the strictures of the law.”
