Blue Jays Call Up Top Prospect Gabriel Moreno (Jays Journal)

The Toronto Blue jays are calling up top prospect, catcher Gabriel Moreno, from Triple-A Buffalo. Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase broke the news.

One area he should help immediately with is making contact: he has only struck out in 11.9% of his 948 plate attempts in the minors, including at a 17.1% rate this year. Moreno saw some time at third base in the AFL, but his ceiling behind the plate is immense as a potential All-Star. Zack Collins was recalled from Buffalo to replace him, and had a solid game today in Kansas City, going 2/4 with a solo home run as the starting catcher. An infielder at the time of signing, the 22-year-old puts his athleticism to use with blocking, receiving and throwing. has made promising developments behind the plate as well. Keegan Matheson of MLB.com adds that Moreno’s call-up is likely to coincide with Toronto’s upcoming weekend series in Detroit.

Gabriel Moreno gets his chance as Blue Jays call up highly-touted ... (Toronto Star)

Moreno, the promising 21-year-old catcher, is set to join the Blue Jays for their three-game series in Detroit with Danny Jansen out with a hand injury.

Despite the arrival of Moreno, the Jays are still expected to use Kirk as their primary catcher. That should prove useful down the road when Moreno is ready to take on a more substantial role. However, Kirk requires regular rest to make sure he doesn’t wear down as the season progresses. Even if Moreno isn’t fully developed, Jansen’s setback creates a perfect opportunity for the slugging catcher to receive a crash course on the Jays pitching staff at the big-league level. The Jays could opt to delay the move by placing Moreno on the taxi squad until they are ready to use him in the starting lineup. It was Jansen’s fractured left hand which created an opening for Moreno. Jansen was struck by a pitch during a game against the Kansas City Royals on Monday and he’s expected to miss at least the next two weeks.

Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire: Gabriel Moreno makes for another ... (CBSSports.com)

Just when we've wrapped our minds around Alejandro Kirk being a Fantasy stud, the Blue Jays are calling up another potential impact catcher, ...

Shoot, he has a 1.70 FIP and 2.14 xERA. As desperate as manager Alex Cora has been for stability at the back end of the 'pen, a couple of conversions could go a long way. "I think I still don't have all the feel in the world for that pitch yet, but it's just such a good pitch with so much movement that it just gives me the confidence to attack the zone with it," Keller said. For all the talk about Matt Barnes, Hansel Robles, Jake Diekman and even Matt Brasier, it looks like Matt Strahm may be the one stepping into the closer role for the Red Sox. The left-hander recorded his second save in as many days Wednesday, both without allowing a baserunner and both in defense of a one-run lead. He's always had that kind of potential as a hitter, but now the Rays are entrusting him with everyday at-bats -- and batting him in the upper third of the lineup to boot. He has claimed an everyday job up the middle, though, with Jean Segura sidelined by a fractured finger for the next three months, and it turns out regular playing time may have been all he needed to make good on his potential. Gabriel Moreno is intended to be a direct replacement for Danny Jansen, who broke his hand Monday. Catcher has seen an influx of talent in recent weeks, which makes for something of a crowd in one-catcher leagues.

Gabriel Moreno's call-up to Blue Jays: Everything you need to know (The Athletic)

In that case, they could use the extra roster spot on a position player. No one will be looking at the young catcher to carry this lineup, but he can certainly make it even better. Behind the plate, he spoke about his athleticism as a catcher and his plus arm and improved receiving skills. If it’s the latter, DFAing Bradley Zimmer seems like the only potential possibility (unless there’s another injury we don’t yet know about). But Zimmer has been a good defensive replacement in the outfield and remains one of their few left-handed options, even if his bat doesn’t offer much impact. Keith Law previously wrote of Moreno, “his unusual athleticism for the (catcher) position makes him the type of player you should bet will improve when he needs to.” The numbers show Moreno has figured out how to hit Triple-A pitching and appears ready for his next challenge. On the offensive side, the club challenged him to make better swing decisions at the plate. It’s merely the next stage and, often, the hardest one to master. For now, it’s unclear how playing time will be split between Alejandro Kirk and Moreno, but the Blue Jays wouldn’t have called him up if he wasn’t ready to get behind the plate. That means making sure he has a good handle on his routines, which include a training regime, pre-game preparation, hitting and defensive routines and post-game recovery. That was enough to show that he was ready to face major-league pitching. Behind the plate, he thrown out 15 of the 28 (54 percent) runners who have attempted to steal on him.

Gabriel Moreno Gets the Call to the Blue Jays (Last Word on Baseball)

Gabriel Moreno promoted to the Toronto Blue Jays is finally happening. The Blue Jays No. 1 prospect will finally join the team.

With a strong sense at the plate, Moreno is a catcher who comes with a strong arm. It’s fine because, for the time being, he needs to be a backup which starts a few times a week while soaking in his unique environment. The good thing about all this is that Moreno might not be ready to make a major impact at the league level. In 35 games with the Bisons, the Venezuelan has posted a .324/.380/.404 slash line. It’s the right time for the 22-year-old to prove to the Blue Jays what he can do. Gabriel Moreno promoted to the Toronto Blue Jays is finally happening.

Blue Jays promote top catching prospect Gabriel Moreno (Yardbarker)

Signed as an international free agent in 2016, the 22-year-old Moreno has seen his stock soar after an excellent 2021 showing.

Kupp’s jersey appears to have a No. 9 on the front, and it certainly is not his own No. 10. In a photo released by the Rams, the wide receiver appears to be wearing a Matthew Stafford jersey while signing his new megadeal. The list of suspended golfers includes all those taking part in LIV’s inaugural event, which began on Thursday in London. The letter does not specify the length of the suspension or whether it is possible for any of the suspended players to return in the future, though it does state that the Tour is “prepared to deal with those questions.” Initial reports suggested that punishments could vary by player. Brown had a team-high 27 points, shooting 56.3% (9-of-16) from the field and 50% (4-of-8) from three to lead the Celtics. He also added nine rebounds and five assists on the night. In 58 games, Alonso is batting .282/.363/.546 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs this season for the Mets. Meanwhile, Marte is slashing .277/.316/.441 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs in 50 games. I have to admit I wasn’t paying attention while the righty dropped his ERA from 8.27 in April to 2.11 in May. He has been a big part of the Red Sox's recent hot streak and Boston is on a 5-0 win streak when Pivetta starts. Cassidy, 57, had led Boston to six consecutive playoff appearances, including a berth in the 2018-19 Stanley Cup Final with a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Blues. His .635 career points percentage as a head coach ranks fourth in NHL history among those with at least 500 games behind the bench. Angels Prediction and Pick To be fair, the Angels are a little bit banged up right now with several injuries, including one to superstar Mike Trout. The best player on this team left last night’s game with groin tightness. Primarily a catcher with a strong arm, Moreno has received the odd start at DH and third base in recent years to get his right-handed bat into teams’ lineups. If nothing else, Moreno’s call-up figures to place some pressure on a number of bench players and outfielders (who have seen reps at the DH position) who have underperformed offensively thus far. Almost. The Red Sox, meanwhile, have really turned things around after a rather awful May. So far this month, the Red Sox have yet to lose a game in seven outings. A right thumb fracture limited the amount of regular-season reps given to the Jays’ top prospect, but it didn’t stop him from receiving a promotion to Triple-A at the end of the year.

The Blue Jays are summoning Moreno because Danny Jansen, the club's most-of-the-time catcher, will miss time with a broken finger. He is nearly five years younger than the average Triple-A player, and last season Moreno authored a .373/.441/.651 batting line with eight homers in 32 Double-A games around a thumb injury. The eventual implementation of the automated ball-strike system might render some of his work moot, but it speaks well of his eagerness to get better -- and his chances for stardom. The Toronto Blue Jays are calling up one of the best prospects in baseball. In addition to adding strength at the plate, Moreno has improved his receiving capabilities behind it. Moreno hit .367/.434/.626 eight home runs in 37 games across three levels last season; he then appeared in 22 games in the Arizona Fall League, where he batted .329/.410/.494 with a walk for every strikeout.

What to expect from Gabriel Moreno (MLB.com)

When Adley Rutschman headed to the Majors on May 21, the title of top catching prospect in Minor League Baseball was passed to Gabriel Moreno.

Moreno and Kirk could rotate through DH duties while the rookie also folds in time behind the plate in an attempt to learn Toronto’s Major League pitching staff. He was an infielder when he first signed with the Jays for $25,000 in August 2016, and while Toronto officials quickly moved him from the dirt to behind the plate, he still possesses the athleticism to be a quality receiver and blocker at the dish. Kirk ranks in the 93rd percentile for pitch framing, according to Statcast. His 1.8 fWAR trails only Willson Contreras’ 2.2 among big league backstops to this point in the season. The Venezuela native leads them all with a .345 average and places third with a 151 wRC+, one spot above current Royals top prospect MJ Melendez (147) and two above Rutschman (146). His .404 slugging percentage represents a major drop from his .651 mark last season in a similar sample size at Double-A New Hampshire. The 22-year-old, right-handed-hitting backstop heads to the Majors with one of the best hit tools in all of prospectdom.

Moreno's hitting skillset could end up translating better to the Big Leagues, but even if it doesn't, the Jays have a safety net. Moreno and Kirk will likely platoon at catcher and DH, as the Blue Jays continue their unconventional rotation of the designated hitter position. One of Moreno's biggest tasks is going to be managing a very diverse Jays pitching staff. However, don't expect to see him fill an everyday DH role in the meantime. Moreno was signed by the Blue Jays from Venezuela for just $25,000 back in 2016.
