Around the CFL: Tanenbaum's comments raise concerns about ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The decades-long mess that is the business of the Toronto Argonauts was laid out for all to see by Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum ...

8. B.C. Lions: Most CFL fans will be rooting for Rourke, the first Canadian opening-day QB since 1983, to play well and become a big name. They need to get over the hump now with the Grey Cup game in Regina. After a radical makeover of the team in the off-season, new Redblacks GM Shawn Burke gets to see his club in action for the first time against the two-time defending Grey Cup champs. This is the best matchup of the opening week. Could this be a potential Grey Cup preview in the Grey Cup venue? Would not be surprising to see both quarterbacks play important minutes. (It is a bit of a CFL tradition for there to be friction between community-owned teams and others). 5. Calgary Stampeders: If Mitchell struggles, Jake Maier seems poised to take the reins. New running back William Powell is out with a hamstring injury, but the Redblacks are capable of staying competitive. I’m not happy with the structure of the league. If MLSE gives up, there will not be a long lineup of potential buyers. And you see the Argos, you know, a 106-year-old league, and what value creation are these franchises trading at?

As CFL kicks off season, Toronto QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson is ... (ESPN)

After several stints with NFL teams, Bethel-Thompson learned it takes more than his big arm to be a successful quarterback.

In his second year, he picked it up from his first year, and this year he's really going to take the reins. Dinwiddie said "Mac's our guy right now," but he made it clear that Kelly has a chance to be a future starter. And he was willing to work through the multiyear process it typically takes an American quarterback to adjust to the CFL game, using that time to calibrate his velocity and remake his body. "He's played in a lot of places down south and bounced around to multiple systems," coach Ryan Dinwiddie said. He led the Argonauts to the Eastern Final, and now, at age 34, the team is pinning its Grey Cup hopes on his newly calibrated arm. Other facets of the Canadian game, such as learning how to read a 12-man defense, simply take time. You start building it up and saying, 'This is my ticket, this is the way I'm going to make it. Years after the Vikings released him for the final time, in 2014, he heard a biting assessment from a Minnesota assistant coach through a third party. He had not risen beyond the third spot on the depth chart and never appeared in a regular-season game. He thought his career might end in the summer of 2015, when the Dolphins released him after he threw four interceptions in 34 passes over three preseason games. I was kind of dealing with some life crisis stuff and wasn't emotionally ready to do it. The last was a failed minicamp tryout with the Jets in 2017, a moment that left him with a choice: retire or accept an offer to join the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. He chose the latter.

“I won’t make it any bigger than what it is … it’s just football,” Rutledge said. I take great pride in that.” “I’m from New York and I was never the biggest player growing up. For Mack, making it to the pro level is particularly meaningful. Just making the team is an accomplishment, though now new goals have been set, which include winning each and every week and taking a third straight Grey Cup title. I’ve always felt the most comfortable out there on the field, in the game. “What I bring is my unique edge,” Mack said. I’ve been in my feelings the last 24-48 hours. “I’m having a little jitters, I can’t lie. “I worked so hard my whole life for this and to see it actually unfold in front of my eyes, it’s something I couldn’t ever imagine,” Mack said. The learning curve has been pretty quick for me.” “Once I got into the role full-time I was like ‘Man, it’s a lot different.

“I was mentally in a state where I might not be able to play football anymore,” said Stanback. “I continued to just stay grounded and understand that my parents wanted me to continue to play, I can’t just quit. This season I just really wanted to go in there full throttle and just make sure that I leave a stamp.” Following his release from the team, Stanback felt he was at a place where a return to football might not be possible. William Stanback had a stellar year for the Montreal Alouettes in 2021. His 1,176 rushing yards were the most of any back, as was his average of 6.1 yards per carry. “That’s just a word that my father used to tell me to be, when I go out there, whether it’s on or off the field,” said Stanback. “That’s just something that I’ve taken to pride, especially when my parents passed.

Head coaches Jones, LaPolice open CFL season with high ... (TheSpec.com)

Montreal's Khari Jones and Ottawa's Paul LaPolice face similar pressures heading into the CFL regular season.

The ‘21 campaign was Campbell’s first as the club’s head coach and co-GM. He was hired as coach in 2020. Campbell has done that, capturing a Grey Cup as Ottawa’s head coach in 2016 after being named the CFL’s top coach the year before. That’s a big reason why Jones, the CFL’s coach of the year in 2018, was rehired was to return the franchise to its former glory. Ottawa finished last in the East Division with a 3-11 record in 2021. The Elks finished last in the West Division last year with a 3-11 record. Burke elected to stick with his head coach and spent much of the off-season reshuffling Ottawa’s roster. -- Craig Dickenson. The Saskatchewan Roughriders are 22-10 in two seasons under Dickenson and reached the West Division final each season, losing to eventual Grey Cup champion Winnipeg both times. Meanwhile in Ottawa, it was former GM Marcel Desjardins who hired LaPolice following the ‘19 season. What adds intrigue to the Montreal situation is Maciocia also has a coaching background. The Alouettes were 10-8 in 2019. Adding to the urgency, both Jones and LaPolice weren’t hired by their general managers. In the results-based business that is pro football, each needs an improved showing by their club to secure extensions.

First in the East is theirs to lose. It might take a few weeks for things to come together, but they will be clicking on all cylinders by the time the playoffs roll around. The Alouettes have all the signs of a dumpster fire in the making. HAMILTON TIGER-CATS — It’s a weak division as usual and the Cats haven’t really downgraded. OTTAWA REDBLACKS — It’s only a matter of time before LaPo gets that offence clicking. OTTAWA REDBLACKS — Shawn Burke has assembled a roster capable of winning the division. They’ll fall just short in the regular season, but I’m banking on them to earn a Grey Cup berth. East Division East Division I don’t see them behind Toronto by more than four to six points. CFL News Hub 2022 Predictions, Grey Cup Champion, MOP ... (CFL News Hub)

The CFL 2022 season is upon us, and we have predictions from CFL News Hub writers and staff. 2022 is our second season covering the CFL.

Does this streak come to an end? He will have an improved team in 2022. Furthermore, they have the best book ends in the game with both DL Jackson Jeffcoat and Willie Jefferson. The Secondary is anchored by Winston Rose and Brandon Alexander who are 2 of the smartest players in the CFL in making big plays. He can dissect a defense and wear them down with long drives. During that slow rebuild a couple of years prior to 2014, they were finally able to get over the hump in defeating the Calgary Stampeders and the Saskatchewan Rough Riders on 2 occasions in 2019 and 2021 winning back-to-back Grey Cups. Zach Collaros is without a doubt the most consistent quarterback in the last 2 seasons in which his total overall game has produced some smart game clock management skills, along with making very few key mistakes in turning over the ball. And Riders fans would love nothing more than to see their team win the Grey Cup in their home stadium. All of the CFL teams (except Calgary and the supposed “struggling” Bo Levi Mitchell) have gotten stronger in the off-season, even the bemoaned/celebrated Edmonton Elks (who is their quarterback?) and I expect the talent level across the board to be a return to form after the wet-fart that was the end of the 2021 CFL regular season. Watching Winnipeg win it all in their stadium will be a bitter bill for the Saskatchewan faithful to swallow. It’s tempting not to take the boring route and predict that Winnipeg will win it all for the third straight season. The East has three legitimate championship contenders in Hamilton, Toronto, and Montreal. All three teams have elite talent on their roster. BC and Edmonton seem like they are not ready yet to challenge for supremacy in the West.

Six things I hated about the TSN Top 50 CFL Players list ... (3downnation.com)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers' quarterback Zach Collaros topped the list and even if you don't think Collaros is the best player in the league — I have my doubts — most ...

He is the reigning Most Outstanding Player and Grey Cup Most Valuable Player, so it is hard to knock him too much, but I don’t think he was truly exceptional last year — I don’t think anyone was, honestly. There are players on Collaros’ own team that might have a better case for the top spot, but until we get away from being so quarterback-centric with these lists and in our analysis in general, that will never happen. Masoli is a great player, but I need to see what he will do in Ottawa after a rocky 2021 in Hamilton before I bestow him top 20 honours. His own team has him on the hot seat as the season begins and any hiccup will see the fans in Montreal screaming for Trevor Harris to take his job. He has accomplished quite a bit in his short CFL career, but 26 seems a tad high for someone who is only just now getting the reins as the unquestioned starter. Adams is already fighting for his job, with turmoil in Montreal brewing before the season even begins, whereas Evans might have the longest leash of any quarterback in the league not named Collaros. Barring injury or something catastrophic we know the Ticats will be going with Evans for the whole season. JaVale McGee is a fun player to watch in the NBA but I am not taking him over someone like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, even if the Hamilton native has to step his game up to make his Oklahoma City Thunder a playoff contender. Adams has been entirely too inconsistent over his career, which Hodges notes, but the former Oregon Duck has also not accomplished anywhere near what Evans has so far in his career. This is a make-or-break year for the 29-year-old.” Andrew Harris is not a top 20 player in the league any longer. Injuries are catching up to him, and the shoulder problem that sidelined him in 2019 seems to still be an issue. Even Harris’ most ardent supporters would tell you the 35-year-old is on the downside of his football journey.

Two seasons, two playoff appearances and two losses is no embarrassment considering what came before Jones. But the fact that he was not hired by general manager Danny Maciocia has led to speculation that Maciocia may have other ideas for the role, perhaps including himself. Consider that in 1967 the NHL had six teams and the CFL had nine. Going with a young quarterback can have its rewards but the short term can be bumpy. And one-tenth of the league’s revenue entity, CFL Ventures, is now owned by a company called Genius Sports, which is essentially promising to rocket the CFL technologically into the future. The Alouettes took a small step backwards in 2021, going from a home playoff loss to a road playoff loss. I’m not happy with the structure of the league. BC Lions – Rick Campbell: The Lions weren’t a disaster last season but got worse as the season wore on, which never leaves a good taste at the end of a non-playoff year. You’ve got to look at that and say, Is that success?” Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum doesn’t offer his opinions in the media often. More scoring, more competition among players, a faster game flow and lots of excitement. The 2021 Grey Cup game was pushed to December just as the Omicron variant wave was taking flight. Few professional sports leagues got hit harder by the pandemic than the CFL, sending it down desperate paths.

2022 CFL standings: What could the playoff picture look like in 2022? (Pro Football Network)

What are the Canadian Football League standings for the 2022 season, and what would the CFL playoff picture be if the season ended today?

If the fourth-place team in either division of the 2022 CFL standings has a better record than the third-placed team in the opposite division, then that team will enter the opposing divisions’ playoffs as the visiting team in the Division Semi-Finals. The crossover rule last came into play in 2019. Three teams from each division can make the playoffs, with the top team in the division having a bye to the Division Finals. The second-placed team then hosts the third-placed team in the semi-final. The first round is the Division Semi-Finals, leading into the Division Finals, and then the Grey Cup game at the conclusion. The playoffs take place over three rounds. Additionally, with six of the nine teams able to make the playoffs, teams can remain in the hunt until the very end of the year.

Five CFL players to watch for during the 2022 regular season (The Globe and Mail)

Parades led the CFL in field goals tried (48), made (44) and success percentage (91.7). He was perfect from 40 yards or less (26-of-26) and made 18-of-22 attempts from outside 40 yards, with a season long of 52 yards. There will be plenty of eyes on Lawler after he signed a one-year contract reportedly worth $300,000 with the Edmonton Elks. The deal would make Lawler the CFL’s highest-paid non-quarterback. Stanback’s status for the season opener is unclear as he was limited in practice this week with an ankle injury. Rourke has big shoes to fill as Reilly threw for a CFL-high 3,283 yards last season with 14 touchdowns and just six interceptions despite battling an elbow ailment. The 24-year-old Victoria native enters his first season as the B.C. Lions starting quarterback following the retirement of veteran Mike Reilly. The six-foot-two, 209-pound Rourke made two starts in 2021 and completed 52-of-82 passes (63.4 per cent) for 754 yards with three TDs and five interceptions while rushing 18 times for 111 yards (6.2-yard average) and five touchdowns. Mitchell finished 26-of-36 passing with 285 yards in that game, but had two interceptions and no TDs.

Paredes, Carey lead Stampeders to win over Alouettes in CFL opener (Sportsnet.ca)

A Rene Paredes field goal and a pair of Ka'Deem Carey touchdowns helped the Calgary Stampeders win 30-27 over the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday night.

Paredes was good from 41 yards and 23 yards in the third quarter for Calgary to trail 24-20. His second touchdown on a five-yard carry and a Paredes convert to start the fourth quarter gave the hosts a three-point lead. Davis finished the drive for a major. From the 49-yard line, Mitchell engineered a six-play drive finished by Henry's 10-yard touchdown catch. "It took awhile to get here," Sindani said. The Alouettes are in Toronto to face the Argonauts and the Stampeders travel to Hamilton to meet the Tiger-Cats in Week 2. "We were the ones that made the plays late. David Cote added a pair of field goals. It was pretty swollen. The Stampeders (8-6-0) finished third in the West Division last season and lost the division semifinal in overtime to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Cauz: Fantasy scenarios that let everyone win - CFL.ca (CFL.ca)

If you are in a season-long CFL fantasy league, I imagine by the time you read this you have already completed your draft. How did it go by the way?

This is the easiest of all my picks and is consistent with my ultimate hopes and dreams. Football is littered with stories of aging running backs hitting that wall so why not cheer for the opposite side? The reason I want him to lead the league in picks is it would mean CFL quarterbacks would actually start testing him. I understand the idea that his ability to cut off a large chunk of the field from quarterbacks is important for the BC Lions’ defence but what about us the fans? When Breaux retired after the 2019 season, he took with him the belt of best coverage defender in the league. If any player is deserving of leading the league in their most important statistical category it’s Jefferson, who has put together the best five-year run among any and all CFL defensive players regardless of position.
