Angels Fire Manager Joe Maddon (The New York Times)

The recent collapse proved too much for a star-studded team with playoff aspirations. Phil Nevin was named the interim manager.

As Minasian has struggled to rebuild — the Angels have not made the playoffs since 2014 — Eppler moved on to the Mets, where he is leading the top team in the National League. Everything seemingly has gone wrong for the Angels during the recent losing streak, from Trout enduring an 0 for 26 slump to third baseman Anthony Rendon landing on the injured list — again — to the team’s pitching staff being wildly inconsistent. The Angels fired Brad Ausmus, who had been with the team for only one year, in order to secure Maddon.

Angels fire manager Joe Maddon; skid reaches 13 games (The Washington Post)

The Los Angeles Angels fired manager Joe Maddon but still stretched their losing streak to 13 games, matching the worst skid in franchise history.

Maddon is the second manager to be fired this season. After finishing with losing records in Maddon’s first two seasons, the Angels were off to a strong 27-17 start this year before their current losing streak began. He has never been a manager above the Triple-A level, but he spent four seasons as the New York Yankees’ third base coach before joining Maddon’s staff this season. “There’s ups and downs compounded with how the last 12 days have gone. Los Angeles’ offense, which was among the majors’ best in the first six weeks, has scored only 40 runs during its 13-game losing streak and been outscored by 44 runs. The Angels were beaten 1-0 in Maddon’s final game by the Red Sox and journeyman starter Michael Wacha, who threw a three-hitter against the Halos’ star-studded lineup Monday night. “The last two weeks have been really tough. The 68-year-old Maddon went 130-148 with the Angels, who hired him before the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season for his self-described dream job. The Angels tied a club record with their 13th straight loss Tuesday night, falling 6-5 to the Boston Red Sox in 10 innings. “Looking at the last couple of days is really when I started thinking about making a change. The Angels were leading 6-2 in the eighth inning before Bryce Harper tied it on a grand slam. The defeat surpasses the 1988 mark for longest single-season skid in club history.

Jose Ramirez likely would have doubled twice, or maybe even three times, in the later game, but he was robbed over and over again. Winner goes to the World Series, according to this sentence I just made up. The Guardians and Rangers split the doubleheader, tying 9-9 on the scoreboard.

Angels lose 13th straight after firing Maddon; Trout injured (TheRecord.com)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Swapping out their manager didn't change the Los Angeles Angels' fortunes Tuesday night.

Boston took the lead with three runs in the second. Trout — who came into the game with one hit in his last 29 at-bats — then drove Garrett Whitlock’s sinker over the wall in center field for his 14th home run of the season and a 2-0 advantage. This is the first time Nevin has managed in the majors. José Suarez made his first start since April 30 and went a season-high five innings. He has seven years of managerial experience in the minors. Red Sox: Chris Sale (right rib stress fracture) did not throw his scheduled bullpen due to a stomach bug. Then I got to second base and a little achy and tried to be smart about it. “The bullpen did an amazing job. Interim boss Phil Nevin lost his managerial debut and Angels star Mike Trout exited with left groin tightness as Los Angeles tied the franchise mark for its longest skid set from 1988-89. There was no scan or MRI done after Trout left the game. “You saw the effort from everyone. Somebody needs to do it so why not me?”

The Sports Report: Angels fire Joe Maddon (Los Angeles Times)

Williams has already been hired as the associate head coach of the Auburn women’s basketball team, a role he accepted last month and was expected to start in mid-summer. “After a thorough evaluation of the state of our team, the Sparks and GM/Head Coach Derek Fisher have agreed to part ways,” managing partner Eric Holoman said in the team’s statement. The five-year veteran is coming off a historic season. He and manager Dave Roberts conversed for several minutes, Roberts keeping an arm draped around the outfield most of the time. “He’s very well liked in the clubhouse and organization. “On behalf of our ownership group, I want to thank Derek for his efforts and contributions to the Sparks franchise. He was manager Mike Scioscia’s bench coach when the Angels won the World Series in 2002

Joe Maddon Blames Firing From Angels On Analytics (OutKick)

Despite losing the last 12 games he managed, Joe Maddon doesn't feel as though he was the problem. It was analytics I tell ya! The Angles fired Maddon on.

He finished his Los Angles tenure with a 157-172 record. “It’s not to point the finger at just one particular person. “It’s been kind of difficult overall.

The odd construction around Shohei Ohtani certainly didn't help Joe ... (Deadspin)

Having a six-man rotation isn't ideal, but Maddon far from blameless.

If the Angels have a stopper, they have to wait an extra day to see him on the mound and if the slide continues, it’s another six games before they can try again. It may take another whack or two before the Angels can figure out what a team with a six-man rotation and a limited pen by the rules looks like so it can compete. The Angels are 10th in MLB in innings from their starters for the year, but 23rd the past two weeks during this run of confusion and sadness. Maddon certainly didn’t use his pen very creatively, as he only has one multiple-inning guy out there in Jaime Barria. Considering that the Angels have to roll with six starters, which means one less reliever than most, they probably need more than that. Still, there is something about the way the Angels have to build their team thanks to Ohtani being around. It’s not on Maddon that 2021 MVP Shohei Ohtani has been a walk or a strikeout of late and not much else.

Now, Phil Nevin might bring the polar opposite of what Joe Maddon is in that Nevin brings a fiery presence and is not afraid to let an umpire here it. It might have been the right time to get a new look at things with time to still save their season. They were a wild card in 2018 and that marked the first time in franchise history the Cubs were in postseason play four consecutive seasons. The turnaround was already in process -- so, to be clear, it would be folly to give Maddon even close to sole credit -- but he still took over a Cubs team that won 73 games in 2014. Then Piniella, Leyland and Scioscia would be contemporaries in a similar ballpark in the discussion and I believe it's worth throwing Johnson in that mix as well. The Rays were still the Devil Rays when Maddon took over prior to the 2006 season and they were the embarrassment of baseball. The circumstances illustrated above certainly push him up into the territory where a discussion is worthy, but he's in line behind Bochy -- along with Baker and Terry Francona (he wasn't mentioned above because he's an easy and obvious yes) once they retire. It should also be noted that Hall of Fame managers are inducted via era committees and never go through a BBWAA vote, which means it'll be a panel of 12 voters. There is, of course, the possibility that a number of the above names gets into the Hall of Fame at some point in the near future. Though Maddon has a great track record, he now hasn't had a winning record since 2019, hasn't made the playoffs since 2018 and hasn't been to the divisional round of the playoffs since 2017. They each won one World Series. Maddon was 32-35 in the playoffs while Herzog was 26-25. In 2008, the Rays won 97 games and the AL pennant. Of course, Davey Johnson won 1,372 games with a .562 winning percentage. In parts of 19 seasons, Maddon won 1,382 games, which is 31st in MLB history, but he'll be 32nd soon enough ( Padres manager Bob Melvin has 1,380 right now). While Maddon is ahead of a decent number of Hall of Famers here, sitting outside the top 30 doesn't exactly make him a volume candidate.

With Their Losing Streak at 12, the Angels Do Something by Firing ... (FanGraphs)

They haven't won since, however, and with their losing streak reaching 12 games, on Tuesday they fired manager Joe Maddon and named Phil Nevin as interim ...

Brooklyn-based Jay Jaffe is a senior writer for FanGraphs, the author of The Cooperstown Casebook (Thomas Dunne Books, 2017) and the creator of the JAWS (Jaffe WAR Score) metric for Hall of Fame analysis. It’s not his fault that Trout and Ohtani went into slumps, a couple key players got injured and a solid rotation hit a rough patch, but every manager is hired to be fired, as the saying goes, and in this case, the Angels couldn’t resist the easy move. This year’s middle infield, which entered the season ranked 26th at second base and 23rd at shortstop in our preseason Positional Power Rankings, has combined for 0.5 WAR, with Andrew Velazquez hitting for a 42 wRC+ as the regular shortstop and Wade and Luis Rengifo getting most of the work at second. The bullpen, however, is another story, ranking dead last in the AL with a 4.30 FIP, and 13th with both a 4.29 ERA and a 22% strikeout rate. I said you just try to reduce the information you’re giving, try to be aware of who’s giving the information and really be aware of when it’s time to stay out of the way. While he’s been conservative about letting his starters face batters for a third time — the Angels entered Tuesday ranked 19th in the total number of batters faced under such circumstances — his pitchers held opponents to a .296 wOBA in that context, the majors’ fifth-lowest mark. He didn’t have the same luxury on the Angels; Tyler Wade is no Ben Zobrist, and Rendon no Kris Bryant. With their stars-and-scrubs rosters and injuries galore, in both 2020 and ’21 Maddon’s lineups had the platoon advantage in less than 50% of their plate appearances, and only this year are they above that mark. That’s a lot of bad fortune at once, and it particularly didn’t help that the Yankees — the hottest team in baseball and off to the majors’ best start in 21 years — teed off on both Noah Syndergaard (2.1 innings, five runs) and Shohei Ohtani (three innings, four runs). After the latter got only three swings and misses via his 75 pitches, Maddon suggested he was tipping his pitches, telling reporters, “I’m not accusing anybody of anything except that they’re good at it. We’ve struggled on the mound, we’ve struggled at the plate, we’ve struggled defensively, we’ve struggled baserunning. The losing streak is the longest in the majors this year and the longest single-season skid in franchise history; it matches a wraparound streak of 13 straight that spanned from late 1988 to early ’89 (a stretch that encompassed the entirety of the Moose Stubing managerial era, such as it was). The current streak, which offsets what had been the team’s best 44-game start since 2004, has dropped the Angels to 27–30, 9.5 games behind the first-place Astros and 2.5 out of the third Wild Card spot. They haven’t won since, however, and with their losing streak reaching 12 games, on Tuesday they fired manager Joe Maddon and named Phil Nevin as interim manager for the remainder of the season, then dropped their 13th straight game with a 10-inning loss to the Red Sox. He explained afterward that he cramped up while legging out the double, told Nevin, “I need to be a little careful with this,” and did not seem overly concerned beyond that.

Star-studded Angels were a puzzle Joe Maddon couldn't solve (FOXSports.com)

The Angels have Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, yet proven manager Joe Maddon couldn't make it work, Martin Rogers writes.

The chances of losing 12 games consecutively, assuming a 50-50 matchup, are 1-in-4096. It is a bit of a puzzle. On the surface, the Angels are free of drama. Why couldn’t Maddon make it work in Anaheim? Now 68, he was hailed as a great innovator with the small-spending Tampa Bay Rays, taking the team to its first AL pennant. A strong 27-17 start to the season has been ruined by that 12-game run — oops, now 13 after another late lead was surrendered against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. Last season, Ohtani’s elite pitching and outstanding hitting earned him the American League MVP award in a cakewalk.

Could Joe Maddon Be The Philadelphia Phillies Next Manager? (Sports Illustrated)

After getting fired by the Los Angeles Angels, could the Pennsylvania native take the reins of the Philadelphia Phillies?

But his lack of World Series appearances shouldn't muddy Maddon's reputation, he currently sits with 32 postseason wins which is the 11th most in the history of the MLB. As the Phillies' search for a new manager continues, they have just been given a potential candidate. The Phillies' roster is chalked full of them from reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper, to Kyle Schwarber, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler... the list can go on. It's clear that at least a part of their successes has Maddon's fingerprints all over it. On his resume, Maddon has more than enough of that with his biggest achievement being his 2016 World Series win with the Chicago Cubs. Granted, other than 2016, Maddon has only made one other World Series appearance which was against the Phillies in 2008. it was extremely important."
