Oh, how droll! Jared Leto is now participating in your "Morbin' Time ... (The A.V. Club)

The "living vampire" actor posted a video of himself holding a fake script referencing the internet's latest new ironic obsession.

It’s now clear, in any case, that Sony is running some sort of bizarre experiment here with this whole “Bring Morbius back to theaters” project: Pick a fairly weak box office weekend—sliding in between the debuts of Top Gun: Maverick last week and the U.S. debut of Jurassic World: Dominion next week—and figure out exactly how many dollars 8 million “Morbin’ Time” memes actually translate into. Jared Leto, the eponymous “living vampyr” from Sony’s latest “We have the rights to make movies about Spider-Man that do not contain any spidered men” picture Morbius, has now put his personal stamp of approval on the internet’s beloved “It’s Morbin’ Time” meme! Well, we were going to say “that even Jared Leto can successfully employ them,” but that seems a little too mean, so we’ll just let that sentence trail off instead.

"All of the actors believe in processes. Even though as he's alive and strong, it has to be a difference. However, it's safe to say that Morbius wasn't well-received by fans, with brutally honest reviews and one of the worst-ever Rotten Tomatoes scores after premiering.

The meme parodies the wild enthusiasm often seen in Marvel fans, the joke being that Morbius is a mediocre, forgettable comic book movie, but is celebrated online as a critically acclaimed masterpiece. Are Sony execs, still struggling to understand the concept of irony, going to greenlight a Morbius 2? Hence, the movie was re-released in theatres, only to flop even harder, earning a hilariously low $85,000 on Friday. Amusingly, fans jokingly predicted this would happen.

But it turns out that a meme’s popularity doesn’t directly correlate to genuine interest — who could’ve guessed? Morbius was originally released on April 1st and wasn’t the most well-received. The film made just $85,000 on Friday after making a return to over 1,000 theaters, bringing its domestic cumulative to $73.6 million (via Forbes).

Damn You, Jared Leto (Gizmodo)

Earlier in the week, Sony announced their plans to bring their vampire/superhero-ish movie Morbius back into theaters this weekend.

[Correction: 12:12 PM ET: This post previously said that the film was coming to theaters again on July 1. But the bigger issue is that it’s trying to be in on the joke in a very “dad using slang he heard from his kids” way. After pretending to hide it from the camera person, the title page is shown: Morbius 2: It’s Morbin’ Time, written by Bartholomew Cubbins. “It’s Morbin’ Time,” if you’re not aware, has become the memetic phrase used whenever the film’s been brought up on social media.

Sony Trolled by Fans as Morbius Reopening Flops (Badly) (The Direct)

Morbius flopped at the box office after reopening in theaters, and Twitter is finding it hilarious.

Even if Jared Leto's Morbius doesn't earn a sequel, that's not to say the character won't return in other projects. Then again, this is the same studio that decided to re-open a failed film and green-lit Bad Bunny's El Muerto - a character with only two comic appearances - so nothing can be ruled out. The attempted reopening may well have been a test to see if these memes would be able to make Morbius 2 viable, but this logic was flawed in itself. Sony should take any money they made off of Morbius and run because a sequel will do half of what the first did if they are lucky." Sony's latest flop has developed into something of a viral trend as it has been widely meme for the fake "It's Morbin' Time" line - even major brands like KFC and GFUEL got in on the joke. Who would have thought a film that failed as badly as Morbius could keep cropping up in the news over two months after release?

Morbius Flops At Box Office Again - Memes Can't Save Marvel Movie (Screen Rant)

Sony's re-release of Morbius in response to a surge of internet memes around the Marvel title resulted in the movie once again flopping.

Morbius of course was originally supposed to come out way back in 2020 but COVID ended up delaying its release for two years. The wild success of Venom and its sequel prompted Sony to continue building out its Spider-Man Universe with more titles. Morbius flops again at the box office after internet memes prompted Sony to re-release the film.
