Kaapo Kakko joins rest of Kid Line's scoring surge to give Rangers ... (New York Post)

Maybe Kaapo Kakko felt left out. If he did, he did something about it in the Rangers' win.

Good for the Rangers, who will take a commanding 2-0 series lead to Tampa, Fla., for Game 3 on Sunday afternoon. “I just stayed in front of the net and we got some chances before that and Foxy got the puck and made a nice pass. Just put it in the net.’’

Lightning-Rangers Game 2 report card: Streak ends, series goes on (Tampa Bay Times)

New York snaps Tampa Bay's NHL-record stretch of wins in playoff games immediately following a loss.

In the third, Zibanejad beat Vasilevskiy stickside on a wrist shot from the left circle. Reaves got his stick between Maroon’s legs, and Maroon responded with a punch to the face. Vasilevskiy had a clear view of the rebound attempt, but it still beat him gloveside. They got pucks behind New York’s defense, won battles and got shots to the net. For a system that takes a tremendous toll on their bodies? We know this much: The Rangers aren’t simply going to bend to their will.

“The way we have to start a game is the way we played that third period,” said Lightning forward Corey Perry.” “We’ve got a little bit of momentum, and we see what works and what doesn’t, and you have to remember that going home. Do we have a hill to climb? “At some point, you might lose two in a row in the playoffs,” said Lightning head coach Jon Cooper. “The fact that we haven’t for how many years is remarkable, so we could take a second here and say, ‘Hell of a job, boys,’ but for the most part, streaks do come to an end and unfortunately it came to an end tonight.

'Unreal' Igor Shesterkin provides more heroics to close out Rangers ... (New York Post)

Two games into a series that was billed as a duel between the world's two best goaltenders, Igor Shesterkin has two wins over Andrei Vasilevskiy.

The Rangers seem to have figured something out with Vasilevskiy: His vulnerable spot is to the high blocker side. In Shesterkin’s case, most of the wins have very much belonged to him, and with 29 saves, so did this one. The Rangers were asking Igor Shesterkin to go win them the game. Obviously, we have a lot of trust in him and kinda let him do his thing. Obviously we try to limit the chances that he sees by blocking shots and doing those little things. For much of Friday night, it looked as if Game 2 against the Lightning wouldn’t have to be one of those nights for the Rangers. They were controlling the game.

Igor Shesterkin was asked about his comment that Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is the best in the world after the Rangers' Game 2 win.

Ahead of Sunday’s Game 3, Shesterkin was asked about his comment that Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is the best in the world after the Rangers win. Perhaps he also doesn’t want to poke the bear and give the Lightning any bulletin-board material. After a Game 1 thrashing, the Rangers handed the Lightning their first back-to-back playoff losses since 2019.

By the end of the third quarter, the Celtics were down, 92-80, and it looked to be a runaway. Well, that’s going to fall on me because we weren’t, and I understand that…I just pray that they get better and that they get to the playoffs.” According to team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, the decision to get rid of Girardi was solely his. “It’s something we needed to hear,” Derrick White also told Yahoo! Sports. “We were challenged to toughen up and we did.” Udoka and the now-confident Celtics will look to buck the odds once again on Sunday in Game 2 against the Warriors. The Celtics stiffened up on defense, limiting the high-powered Warriors to just 16 points in the fourth quarter. The Boston Celtics and Golden State Warriors put on an epic show, which featured an inspiring Celtics comeback spurred on by a fiery speech from their head coach, Ime Udoka. The Warriors surged to an early lead on the back of Steph Curry, who connected on a record-breaking six three-pointers in the first quarter. First in Pittsburgh in Game 6 to avoid elimination in the opening round, and then in Game 7 to take down the Hurricanes. Nadal, who turned 36 on Friday, is now the second-oldest men's finalist in French Open history and will look to become the oldest champion in the tournament's history. The odds believe this is the Warriors game to lose and I think the same thing. It's been reported that La Russa, was not who General Manager Rick Hahn would have selected to manage the team after Ricky Renteria was let go following the 2020 season, but La Russa is a "Win Now" choice and the White Sox have not been winning with him. The main argument for taking the points and Boston would be that Jayson Tatum is expected to play better in Game 2 after going 3-for-17 in the opener. Golden State dominated for a majority of the game and took their foot off the gas at the wrong time. That goal proved to be the game-winner as Nick Paul cut the lead to one with Vasilevskiy pulled.

How the Lightning Built a Champion Through the Rangers (The Hockey Writers)

From 2014 through 2020, the Tampa Bay Lightning built a championship contending team through talent acquired from the New York Rangers.

In all, from 2014 through 2020, seven players who wore the Rangers jersey went on to play for the Lightning directly, while four more who were acquired through draft picks (either selections or trades) played at least one game with the franchise. First, he flipped Miller to the Vancouver Canucks for a 2020 first-round pick and a 2019 third-rounder, which was used to select goaltender Hugo Alnefelt. While they would fall once again in the Eastern Conference Final, the team looked primed to win a lot in 2018-19. After he came to the Lightning, the former Rangers’ captain used his presence to lure important free agents to Tampa Bay. In 2014, this included both Anton Stralman and Brian Boyle. In the deal itself, the Lightning acquired a starting veteran forward they re-signed to a long-term (albeit overpriced) contract, and numerous draft picks, one of which was used to select Anthony Cirelli. They also picked up Daniel Walcott with the additional seventh-rounder from New York, who has been a fantastic player on Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. From 2014 through 2020, there were many direct connections between the New York Rangers and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Over the course of roughly five years, the Lightning steadily poached talent from New York through trades, free-agent signings, and even a few buyout candidates that they used to build out their young core with veteran talent.

The Rangers had scored on the power play in six straight games and in 11 of their first 15, but they were 0-for-4 in Game 2 and it did not deter them in a 3-2 win at Madison Square Garden to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 series. The Lightning hope returning home and the late momentum they generated to pull within a goal late in Game 2 will carry over to Game 3. New York has won eight consecutive postseason games on home ice and now hit the road, where Tampa Bay coach John Cooper will have the last change for Games 3 and 4. Tampa Bay hasn't been able to keep up with or slow New York's speed in the first two games of this series. The Avalanche are 5-0 on the road during the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs and have shown a penchant of not being intimidated by raucous crowds like the one they'll be playing in front of at Rogers Place on Saturday. Edmonton has been outscored 12-6 in Games 1 and 2 and must tighten up defensively if it hopes to get back into the series.
