National Donut Day was established in 1938 to honor the work of nearly 250 Salvation Army officers known as “Donut Lassies” who traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support as well as fried confectionary, clothes, and supplies to troops in World War I. For more than a century, the organization has continued to provide a wide range of essential services to the most vulnerable and the men and women serving on the front lines of need. - The Salvation Army in Chicago celebrated the first National Donut Day in 1938 to help those in need during the Great Depression and to commemorate the work of the “Donut Lassies,” who served donuts to soldiers during World War I. - In 1917, The Salvation Army began a mission to provide spiritual and emotional support for U.S. soldiers fighting in France during World War I. Nearly 250 Salvation Army officers traveled overseas and set up small huts near the front lines where they could give soldiers clothes, supplies and, of course, donuts.

A wide range of social services that tend to America’s vulnerable populations are also included in the mix of serving free donuts and coffee, including the Salvation Army. Known as the donut girls, the tradition continued through World War II through the Red Cross. In light of the work and kindness of the the Donut Lassies, The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida will deliver two hundred dozen donuts to over 85 local hospitals, fire departments, police stations and news stations on June 3, to commemorate National Donut Day.

Journey to Life Centre staff delivers donuts to community partners in thanks for their service over the past two years.

The donuts were supplied by the Mini Donut Shoppe food truck, which has also set up outside the Journey to Life Centre and will donate a portion of the proceeds from sales made on Friday to the Salvation Army. It’s a Salvation Army tradition that dates back to 1938, when Donut Lassies served the sweet treats to soldiers they were treating during the Second World War. It’s celebrated on the first Friday of June each year. THUNDER BAY – The Salvation Army of Thunder Bay has found a pretty sweet way to thank its community partners.
