Prince William, Prince Charles and Princess Anne arrived at Trooping the Colour on horseback ahead of receiving the salute for the first time.
Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 7, and Prince Louis, 4, looked too cute in blue outfits as they waved to the crowds from their seats. The Queen, who has been experiencing mobility issues, did not join other members of the royal family as they arrived in cars and carriages. The Duke of Cambridge, 39, the Prince of Wales, 73, and the Princess Royal, 71, accepted the Trooping the Colour salute as colonels of the Welsh Guards, the Irish Guards and the Blues and Royals for the first time.

Handmade signs have been hung over the barriers, with one simply saying, "Thank you". The Prince of Wales then inspected the line of guards on horseback followed by William and Anne who rode side by side behind the heir to the throne.

They’ve been around for most of our lives and tell relatable, important stories with wit and pathos; they’re a near-daily source of laughter and drama. In the 70 years since her coronation, the Royal Family have embraced and celebrated the country’s soaps – it’s made them more relatable, good-humored, in touch with what is important to us as a nation (even if that is Janine Butcher pushing her husband Barry off a cliff). One actor who was there for both occasions was William Roach, who plays Ken Barlow, and has been a regular on the series since its first ever episode. It may seem like a strange way to celebrate 70 years of the Queen’s reign – is EastEnders, a TV drama that popularised the (iconic) phrase “I didn’t just become a little bit of a slag, I became a total slag” really the place to celebrate such a momentous, once-in-a-lifetime occasion?

Yet royal historian Dr Ed Owens said Charles is now a “regent in all but name”. “Given the queen’s frailty, she is unable to perform more demanding aspects of her royal role,” he told i. This is not the case for the Queen, who remains head of state and in full control of the monarchy, Mr Fitzwilliam stressed. “Having Charles more visible in these moments is a way of slowly getting the public used to seeing him take more centre-stage, in a way that might be to try lessen the impact of the change in monarch when the time comes,” she said.
An admirable Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall proved they were dab hands at small talk – no matter how bizarre the conversation.
I had no idea if this was the actor or the character talking (I checked later, and it was the character) and I’m not sure the Prince did either, but he chatted away with practised ease. A young man told the Prince that he was “a graduate of the Prince’s Trust” and had met him 10 years ago. The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall gamely appeared in the show, playing themselves.

When I did this cookbook, I wanted to do an afternoon tea book and do it against a backdrop of some of the amazing royal palaces and castles and residences. They all absolutely loved all of the fresh produce from the garden, whether that be strawberries in the summer or apples in the autumn. Prince Charles knew that's the way he wanted to eat and that's the way he wanted us to operate in the kitchen. I love using fresh herbs and fresh flowers and that kind of thing in cakes. It's quite a devotion in that it's long hours and it's weekends and night times and quite a lot of traveling. So, they were given a choice of menus in a little menu book, and then they would decide for that day. Was there a personal favorite that you enjoyed cooking or a meal they loved and always requested from you? Was there a particular recipe Charles and Diana enjoyed, too? Whereas, what I loved so much about the job is that it was so, so different. Charles was looking to shake up his kitchen staff by adding a female cook to the rotation, and it just so happened that Robb, a recent graduate from the esteemed Tante Marie Culinary Academy outside of London, was cooking for his relative and neighbors, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester. "Up until that point, Prince Charles always had male chefs and was looking to have a female chef," she explains. What do you think it takes to be a royal chef? But Carolyn Robb impressed the future king with her delectable creations so much, that she stuck around to feed him, Princess Diana, and their two young sons, Princes Charles and Harry, for 11 years at Kensington Palace.

Ed Chamberlin presents racing coverage on ITV from 12.40pm. A guard of honour, made of up to 40 of the Queen's past and present jockeys, is due to line the course. The tragedy is that before Meghan came along, Harry was the very essence of a popular 21st-century prince. For Harry this must be the hardest of homecomings, because he has been reduced to little more than a spectator. Meghan's arrival in his life changed so much of that. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge followed, with Kate waving cheerily to the crowds while chatting to her husband.
