The group, GenderCool, worked with State Farm to provide books about gender equity for children ages 5 and up that State Farm agents and employees could ...

But after facing a conservative backlash over the partnership, State Farm last week rescinded its support for GenderCool. The company said “conversations about gender and identity should happen at home with parents” and that it no longer supports “the program allowing for distribution of books in schools.” If it doesn’t, the lawmakers wrote, they will be “compelled to call out State Farm’s hypocrisy, including, but not limited to, any LGBTQ marketing State Farm plans on doing during Pride month,” which is June. In response, five lawmakers with the General Assembly’s LGBTQ Caucus and the group Equality Illinois issued a statement saying they were disappointed that State Farm “chose to make a knee- jerk concession to bigotry rather than stand in solidarity with our LGBTQ community and our allies who support inclusion.”

Pride in the mountains: Two ski counties gear up for annual LGBTQ ... (Rocky Mountain PBS)

As Colorado's largest statewide, member-supported, multi-media network, Rocky Mountain PBS wants to make sure everyone is seen and heard.

A back-and-forth argument between residents and the Mountain Pride eventually ended in an emotional Avon Town Council meeting where pride planners explained why the flags were important for representation and visibility. “In a lot of big cities, there are queer spaces that exist year-round, and we don't have anything like that here, so we really only get one day a year to take up space,” said Chelsie Holmes, president of the Yampa Valley Pride planning committee. “When people found out I was gay in high school, they were immediately against it and all the stereotypical religious and homophobic stuff went on,” Worthen said. “Torrential downpour isn't exactly what most people want when they think of pride, so we were unsure, but we had such a shocking and wonderful turnout,” said Lexi Gretzgy, another member of the Yampa Valley Pride committee. Last June, the town of Avon hung several rainbow flags around its roundabouts and in front of its recreation center to show support for LGBTQ+ pride month. While Ortiz and other members of the pride committee said the backlash was hurtful, the opposition was heavily drowned out by support with dozens of county residents writing letters of support to the town council.
