Diablo Immortal Review in Progress - IGN (IGN)

Killing monsters just never gets old in the Diablo games. The feel-it-in-your-bones punch and kinetic energy of combat has always been one of the series' ...

And with more than 20 hours of microtransaction-free gameplay behind me, there’s clearly a lot of content to enjoy before you need to consider spending money, so this is very much a game you can try before you buy. And by the time I was getting a good feel for a zone I’d be whisked to the next one. There are numerous activities to compete in and perks to earn as part of this system, but again, with so few players in the early access period I was only able to dip a toe in. Of course, it’s too early to say whether that’s too good to be true for the endgame as well, which is why I’m not yet comfortable slapping down a provisional score here. I’m sure a fair number of these will be resolved by launch, but I’ll be surprised if we don’t see at least a few issues in the early days. I didn’t mind that too much, as Immortal gives you plenty of different options to earn XP, from taking on bounties and contracts, through to running short standalone gauntlets like Challenge Rifts (which steadily increase in difficulty) and Elder Rifts, which keep things interesting through randomised gameplay modifiers that can be both positive and negative. The good news is that not once, in more than 20 hours, did I hit any kind of unexpected roadblock where it felt like I was expected to make a purchase to more easily push through. Not only were all microtransactions disabled on the version I’ve been playing, 20 hours of gameplay is really only enough to scratch the surface. Longer-term you may want to pay more attention to what’s dropping, particularly when you have a specific build you’re aiming for, but in the early going this streamlined system puts the focus on the action, which I like. There are more than 30, opening up all sorts of options to hone in even further on a specific build. The flow of combat for my Demon Hunter was all about utilising a combination of AOE, targeted damage, crowd control and evasive moves, and juggling the cooldowns and recharges on each. Navigating menus is a little clunkier with a controller as you might expect, though, so overall the touch controls are seamless enough that they are currently my preferred control method -- particularly on iPad, where the screen is large enough that having my thumbs on the sides isn’t much of an issue.

Diablo Immortal impressions: A good smartphone game saddled ... (Ars Technica)

Cha-ching. The game also includes a "platinum" currency that appears to require the paid "orb" currency to acquire. Lest you forget, Blizzard spent a lot of time undoing and apologizing for the auction house. Worse than that is the game's "Boon of Plenty" microtransaction package, which currently costs $9.99 per month and must be re-upped every month for its benefits to kick in. Imagine a loot box that requires a 5-10 minute spike in challenge to see the randomly awarded loot inside, and you've got legendary crests in a nutshell. The game's linear, Diablo III-like introduction eventually leads players to a hub town, and its storefronts advertise the game's full slate of in-game purchase opportunities. The new Activision Blizzard game, launching on iOS and Android later on Wednesday and Windows PCs on Thursday, immediately impresses as one of the better smartphone-first action-RPG games on the market.

Immortal was of course launched with a famous meme about its mobile focus, but I really have been impressed with what I’ve seen from it so far, and I’m very excited to dive into the full scope of the game. While Diablo Immortal was officially supposed to launch tomorrow afternoon, Blizzard has pulled a fast one, possibly to avoid some server congestion, and has put the game live…right now, at least in the US. Diablo Immortal will have to tide fans over in the meantime.

Review: Diablo Immortal is, thankfully, another good Diablo game (iMore)

Almost four years ago, Blizzard Entertainment announced that the Diablo franchise would be making the jump to mobile platforms with Diablo Immortal.

More worth keeping an eye on is the Battle Pass. You can grind Bounties and Challenge Rifts to gain more character experience, but the game also pushes the Battle Pass for furthering your character growth. Diablo Immortal is meant to be an ongoing service, with additional content and regions added over time. All of this is in addition to a suite of accessibility options, allowing you to customize the UI size, as well as move around the placement of skill buttons and the character movement pad. You can also adjust the quality of the image, as well as choose to run the game at 30FPS or 60FPS. You collect loot through the game to grow in power, but if you want your chosen character to look visually distinct, you'll likely have to spend some money. The fact is, Diablo Immortal is a true Diablo experience, but it's also not offputting if you're unfamiliar with these kinds of games. It works well and looked good playing on my iPad. There's even a few display options, allowing you to add cooler or warmer filters to the image, so you can tweak it a bit to your liking. We didn't get the chance to try it out during the review period due to lack of players, but it should be a fun extra mode if people want it. It's nothing special, but does provide a great opportunity to interact with classic characters like the wise scholar Deckard Cain. Like in Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, the story is something of a scavenger hunt, giving an excuse to see the various regions of Sanctuary, from dark and spooky woods to blistering deserts. Healing is even more generous than in Diablo 3, with numerous health orbs dropped by bosses and enemies, as well as health potions that operate on a cooldown timer. I'm a longtime fan of Diablo games, so the formula is extremely familiar to me at this point, but I also appreciate how Diablo Immortal makes things approachable for every kind of player. Your character is recruited to stop the spread of evil.

But that could change as the day moves forward, according to DigitalTrends. “As we note in our blog iOS and Android players will start to see Diablo Immortal propagate on their respective stores on the morning of 6/1.

Diablo Immortal feels uncomfortably mercenary (The Verge)

As Activision Blizzard's new mobile game, Diablo Immortal, slowly rolls out, the game itself feels like a traditional Diablo experience tailored for mobile ...

But even though Immortal is a mobile game, it’s still Diablo — a game associated with a discrete set of rules and expectations that are not yet associated with the rules and expectations of a mobile game. As I’m able to get into the guts of Immortal, I hope that these as-yet-undiscovered features are interesting and well-developed enough to counterbalance the sheer mercenary fact of the game’s existence. Clicking through dialogue or scrolling through menus is fine, but I need the tactile response of a button for combat. There’s also an ultimate ability that you can use for an extra boost of power similar to ultimate abilities in Overwatch. I’m not sure what the criteria is for triggering an ultimate — if it’s time gated or built up based on the number of enemies killed — but it’s nice to have when a world boss needs a beating. And when I did have time to sit with the game for a longer period, my exploration was gamely rewarded by a chance encounter with a challenging world boss. The second is that Immortal is also a game designed to extract the most money out of its players.

Diablo Immortal Is Enjoyable If You Can Ignore All The Mobile Game ... (Kotaku)

Blizzard's latest entry in its long-running Diablo franchise released earlier today on ios and Android.

But I also know that for many who don’t play free-to-play phone games a lot, this shit is too much and too gross to ignore. I was playing with a controller on a big iPad and had mostly forgotten this was a free-to-play Diablo game. But, like a bad smell in your kitchen that you can’t quite get rid of, the stink of Diablo Immortal’s microtransactions and economy linger. There’s a really great game in here, but it’s frustratingly buried under an economy and in-game store that never lets up. You can also customize almost every element of the UI, controls, and more to get something that works perfectly for you. This is just one example of a classic element of Diablo being twisted into another way to nickel and dime players. Combat is also very satisfying, with hits and spells making all the perfect sounds you’d want from this type of game. Though the game also supports controllers on android and iOS. But it’s also filled to the brim with ways to spend money that aren’t present in past Diablo titles. And while lower-quality crests can be earned in-game for free, these premium Legendary Crests can only be purchased via the in-game store. And that might kill the game for many. And while it can mostly be ignored in the early hours of the game, it’s impossible to separate that aspect of Immortal from the full experience.

Diablo Immortal Microtransactions Explained: Is It a Pay-to-Win Game? (Den of Geek)

Activision Blizzard is currently under investigation following accusations of harassment, discrimination, and fostering a hostile work environment.

The fact of the matter is that someone who spends money on this game will be able to make their character significantly more powerful in far less time than someone who doesn’t intend to spend any money on the game. That means you do need to re-up your subscription to that service every month in order to continue to acquire the rewards it offers. The last significant microtransaction I’ve found in Diablo Immortal are “packs” that contain a variety of items. That system is designed to encourage you to always check back in with the game. While there don’t seem to be additional packs available at this time, expect that to change as the game is updated. The free and premium tracks of the Battle Pass yield different rewards every time you reach a new level on the Battle Pass progression track. Specifically, you’ll often use them to acquire Reforge Stones, Dawning Echoes, and Legendary Crests. We’ll go over some of those items in the sections below, but the long and short of it is that Eternal Orbs allow you to quickly acquire some of the best upgrades in the game. You can increase your odds of earning Fading Embers (which can be traded in for Legendary Gems) from Elder Rifts by partying up with someone who is using crests, but if you want to benefit from the increased (or guaranteed) Legendary Gem drop rate those items offer, you need to insert a Crest into a rift yourself. I know that’s a lot of weird information to process (which seems to be intentional), but the basic idea is that anyone who wants to regularly acquire Legendary Gems and other valuable Elder Rift items will be able to greatly increase their odds of acquiring them by spending real money on crests. For the most part, you will be able to upgrade your ear using “scrap materials” you acquire from scrapping unwanted gear. The big question at the moment, though, is whether all of those microtransactions add up to make Diablo Immortal a “pay-to-win” game. Most players will use probably end up using most of their Platinum to forge Legendary Gems (more on that in a bit).

Diablo Immortal isn't quite pay-to-win, but it's close (PC Gamer)

If you're looking to pop demons and pick up some loot in Diablo Immortal for more than a few hours, you'll probably have to pay.

Genshin Impact is huge and legitimately fun to play, but its gacha systems are built to exploit the most dedicated players, and Diablo Immortal could be more of the same. Crests are items that modify rifts to increase (or guarantee, with Legendary Crests) the percentage chance of receiving rare gems to slot into your gear, which give you strong passive effects and stats to help you in the endgame PvP and PvE activities. Those concepts are still intact in the new game, but the rate at which you normally receive upgrades and upgrade materials could be skewed toward getting you to pay up. You can upgrade the stats and abilities on your armor and weapons through the blacksmith using scrap materials. Like in Diablo 3, Diablo Immortal has rifts, or portals that send you to randomized dungeons filled with tough enemies and rare rewards. If you're looking to pop demons and pick up some loot in Diablo Immortal (opens in new tab) for more than a few hours, you'll probably have to pay.

There's multiple daily rewards to claim, including some stuff you get for killing your first monster of the day, as well as a free bundle of resources. Just as an example, if you're playing as the Wizard class, using the Arcane Wind skill on any enemies that are currently lit on fire (due to you or another player attacking them) will cause you to ignite a Firestorm and deal increased damage. This means you can have up to five distinct characters active at a time. Diablo Immortal has six different classes: The Barbarian, Crusader, Demon Hunter, Monk, Necromancer, and Wizard. When you first start this iOS game, you'll be asked to pick one of the six. Here's a list of tips and tricks for Diablo Immortal designed to help out beginners and veterans alike.

But that may be dozens and dozens of hours yet, which is a good sign, and I think most people can enjoy plenty of this without feeling forced to pay for anything. I played for a couple hours at most yesterday and already hit level 30+. I do not, however, know what the endgame will be like, and if it does in fact revolve around the Rift system, I fear that’s where the P2W elements could come into play, something that Diablo 3 and its rifts never had to deal with. But in practice, the look and feel of this game are decidedly Diablo 3.5, including a lot of improvements from the aging game like more engaging live sequences and greater character customization. This takes place right before Diablo 3 and deals with a ton of NPCs from that game before you aid/kill them there. The touch controls for one-off, aimed and channeling skills all feel shockingly good, all with some amount of auto-aim in there to help you out rather than frustrate you. I think things can go either way with Diablo Immortal. As you play, you will be dosed with little bits of microtransaction injection every step of the way.

Installez là, ça vous demandera environ 2 Go.

Diablo Immortal class tier list: Which is the best class in Diablo ... (Rock Paper Shotgun)

Diablo Immortal has six classic classes available at launch, each pulling inspiration from the original Diablo trilogy. Choose your class with this guide.

The Barbarian is a Diablo mainstay and returns to fight the legions of Hell once more in Diablo Immortal. If you want the biggest, baddest character and weapons in Diablo Immortal, Barbarian is the class for you. This will still be an option in Diablo Immortal, but the game will also introduce a class change feature “shortly after Diablo Immortal launches,” according to a blog post from the developers. Since Diablo Immortal has shirked the seasonal ladder model of old, the ability to change classes without resetting progress is welcome. The Monk is still rock solid and will have a place in every clan. Necromancer is good in every situation on top of being one of the easiest classes to play, making it the best day-one class in Diablo Immortal. A DLC addition from Diablo 3’s Reaper of Souls expansion, the Crusader returns to cleanse Sanctuary once more. This is a pure melee brawler class perfect for those who prefer to fight up close and personal. In the right hands, Wizard can clear content faster than just about any other class in Diablo Immortal, making it a great choice for pushing the ladder on launch. You may want to kite mobs around a bit to group them up, but once you do the Wizard can vaporize them in an instant. Demon Hunter won’t hold up long in a melee though and relies on movement skills to survive. However, each class has been tweaked to fit Diablo Immortal’s new style of gameplay, with new abilities designed for the new experience. The class can focus on summons, spells, or a mix of both, making it uniquely flexible.

Diablo Immortal: Every Class Ranked Worst to Best (Den of Geek)

If you just can't decide which class to play in Diablo Immortal, these character rankings should help you make a difficult decision.

Their AOE abilities are among the best in the game, they bring some valuable skills to group play, their stun abilities can turn the tide of a lot of fights, and they’re shockingly mobile. Their AOE abilities are some of the best in Diablo Immortal, and they have the stuns and stalls needed to be a menace in PvP encounters. By the time you get into group play, nobody is going to expect a Crusader to top the single-target damage charts in the first place. This isn’t a braindead class by any means (great Barbarian players are significantly better than good ones), but Barbarians are a class that most players will be able to find some success wiht in every aspect of the game. They boast the largest base health pool in the game, and many of their skills are designed to allow them to brush off additional damage. You’re going to be killing things so quickly as a Demon Hunter that you’ll likely never notice you’re missing out on some of the abilities that other classes have access to. Generally speaking, Wizards are a high-skill class that you’ll really need to master in order to get the most out of them. While their lack of evasive abilities can often be offset by their minions’ contributions to a fight, it’s not always easy to manage a Necromancer’s minion-based abilities during the heat of a battle. They bring a couple of valuable buffs to the party, their minions can absorb extra damage, and they’re capable of toping the DPS charts in many fights. The biggest problem there is that Wizards suffer from some of the longest skill cooldowns in Diablo Immortal. Not only does that mean that they’ll occasionally be left without access to a valuable evasive/defensive skill in a bad moment, but they also sometimes need to wait for their combo attacks to refresh so they can maximize their damage output. Every class excels in different aspects of the game, and every Diablo Immortal player’s personal skills, preferences, and needs will help determine what they ultimately get out of a class. Despite being available for mobile devices and despite embracing some MMOARPG ideas seen in games like Lost Ark, Diablo Immortal is still a Diablo game in many of the ways that matter most.

Diablo Immortal: Microtransactions Explained And How To Play For ... (GameSpot)

Diablo Immortal is free-to-play, and while you can enjoy all of its gameplay content for free, get ready to settle in for a long grind if you aren't willing ...

Playing Diablo Immortal without spending money is certainly possible, and enjoying the main campaign as you would a single-player ARPG is a fun experience that feels like there should be some kind of cost associated with it. You're able to buy Eternal Orbs directly through the in-game shop, though this generally isn't a good deal and is probably the least efficient use of your money. There are plenty of things in Diablo Immortal to spend money on, ranging from cosmetic armor sets to crafting materials. It's not impossible to do, but know that being a free-to-player will require more time and effort to get the most out of Diablo Immortal's endgame when compared to players who are willing to swipe their credit card. If you just want to play casually and enjoy the story and the new content as it comes, you're completely able to do so. You'll also be able to participate in PvP battlegrounds and the Cycle of Strife without spending a dime.
