He also threads the puck to the slot at a higher rate and is very proficient with the fifth-best rate of completed passes (almost seven per 60) in the post-season. McDavid moves the puck around the offensive zone at a slightly high rate and connects on a higher percentage of those passes. To slow either of these players down, defenders are going to have to find a way to stop them from skating up the ice with the puck on their stick. With McDavid on the ice, Edmonton has outscored opponents 38-11, and McDavid has earned a point on 68 per cent of those goals. Edmonton is the best offensive team the Avalanche have faced with more elite talent at the top than they’ve seen. With their leading centre on the ice, Colorado has outscored opponents 20-6, and he’s earned a point on 65 per cent of those tallies. The quality of those shot attempts has added to an expected goal value of 4.5 per 60 which leads the league. Even though Colorado has so much forward depth, the St. Louis Blues focused in on the MacKinnon matchup with their best shutdown forward, Ryan O’Reilly. In their 5-on-5 minutes together, St. Louis actually outscored its opponent 4-3. Meanwhile, McDavid earned 44 goals and a league-leading 123 points in 80 games scoring at a rate of 4.2 points per 60 which is the second-best of his career. Their influence unquestionably extends to the power play, but the 5-on-5 battle — where each player has less time and space to play to their strengths — is particularly intriguing. So far, the Oilers have scored 52 goals in all situations in the playoffs, and McDavid has a point on 52 per cent of those goals. Both MacKinnon and McDavid have risen to the occasion this post-season, taking control of games to push their teams forward.

"Sometimes we take a lot of line rushes against Nate in practice and you're kind of like 'Whoa, this is what this feels like.' It's a handful," Colorado defenceman Erik Johnson told NHL.com. "They're always going to make plays and find a way to generate chances, just how many are you going to let them have and how many are they going to generate? "Obviously Connor and Nathan are two of the players that can do things at such a high level," Oilers general manager Ken Holland told NHL.com. "Not only can they play at high speed, they can think at high speed. He's tied with longtime running mate Leon Draisaitl for the league scoring lead with 26 points in 12 games and is also at the peak of his powers. We feel if we play our best, we can get it done against anybody." Same thing with Connor. I'm sure you're backpedalling when those players bring it through the neutral zone at high tempo and do things at high tempo. Got to stay out of the box as well, but we're confident. Obviously, that's probably changing now, but a really tough team to play against. He'll be a handful, but nothing we can't handle." That blows away even Connor McDavid’s playoff production (48 points in 33 career playoff games). MacKinnon is the headlining “bout” for the marquees heading into the 2022 Western Conference Final. As Game 1 nears on Tuesday (8 p.m. ET), it’s OK to daydream about two highly skilled players who can succeed the modern way. Both players can possess the puck, then make genius passes. Don’t be surprised if he gets more bounces, and with that, added hype as one of the best. In MacKinnon and Makar, the Avalanche roll out at least two who might just be too elusive to slow down. If MacKinnon was being a little too “inside baseball” with that escrow comment, he can deflect McDavid questions in the future quite easily.

The Western Conference final features two of the biggest stars in the game - and both are itching to get that first Stanley Cup ring.
And that, to me, makes this one of the most anticipated series in a long time. Colorado was a favorite coming into the playoffs, but based on how McDavid and Draisaitl have led the Oilers, is it really out of the question that Edmonton could prevail? Thinking back, this Avs-Oilers series may not have a parallel since Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin went to war in 2009. Having said that, McDavid's championship pedigree only extends to international play, where he has won gold medals with Canada at the World Championship, world juniors and world under-18s. Both players went through rebuilds that at times looked scary and hopeless, but with good work done by the Oilers and Avs front offices, those sour days are in the rearview mirror. And neither has had any sustained post-season success in the NHL until now.
