Former Sixers big man Al Horford makes Finals as Celtics beat Heat (Sixers Wire)

Former Philadelphia 76ers big man Al Horford helps the Boston Celtics reach the NBA Finals with a win over the Miami Heat in Game 7.

Horford had five points and 13 rebounds as he was big on the defensive end. Horford was then traded back to the Celtics and he has now helped them reach the NBA Finals after they knocked off the Miami Heat 100-96 in Game 7 on the road in South Florida to reach their first Finals since 2008. Horford spent one tough season with the Sixers and he did not have a big impact there as Philadelphia struggled mightily to make it work with Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. The spacing was terrible and Horford was traded in the 2021 offseason to the Oklahoma City Thunder for Danny Green.

Report: Al Horford Dealing With Tough Family Heartbreak (The Spun)

Al Horford wasn't himself on Friday for the Boston Celtics and that could be due to a recent devastating loss in his family.

Horford will likely do everything in his power to win Game 7 on Sunday night for his grandfather. He finished with only three points on 1-of-8 shooting as the Celtics fell to the Heat, 111-103 in Game 6. Al Horford wasn't his usual self on Friday night against the Miami Heat and everybody noticed it.

As Celtics beat Heat to reach NBA Finals, Al Horford finally finds ... (The Athletic)

Al Horford was the hero of the Celtics' grueling seven game Conference Finals win over the Miami Heat.

“This is the biggest game of my career thus far, and I wanted to wear that armband to honor him and kind of share that moment in a way.” “I think in those moments, you don’t want to leave and feel like you could have done something more, so I think I came in with the mindset today that I was willing to do anything it took to win this game, however that looked,” Tatum said. Even after missing Game 1 because of the NBA’s COVID-19 protocols and losing his grandfather earlier this week, Horford was the defensive mastermind this team needed to survive Butler and the Heat’s resurgence. He’s going to show us what we missed, and he’s going to help us learn the game even more.” “So I remember that we had pictures for him and I picked him up from school and we had the cupcakes and we had all this stuff. In the middle of the fourth quarter, Tatum started hitting brilliant late-clock shots to maintain the lead. For me, it’s just special to be with them and be able to help them and be a part of this. He felt Butler was going for the shot, but he knew the Heat star could have just faked it and drove to the rim for another three-point play. “ I’ve been a part of a lot of great teams, a lot of great teammates, and I’m so proud of this group. The 35-year-old had returned to the team he once carried to this same moment years ago, looking for redemption. “On the phone, I would look at photos from a year ago, exactly what I was doing at the moment, and today my son actually graduated from kindergarten,” Horford said. A year later, in the biggest moment of his career, he found himself looking back at that period.

Short. Brown tipped the rebound and got credit for the board, but it was Horford who plucked it from the sky. More important, he became a rebounding force in the second half, grabbing 10 of his 14 rebounds after the break, including six in the fourth quarter. But in that familiar Horford way, he got it just right. He’s always right there where you need him to be in the end. The Celtics had built a 98-85 lead with 3:35 left, but a tough, proud Miami team refused to go quietly, ripping off an 11-0 run with the aid of some dubious Smart shots. I’ve been a part of a lot of great teams, a lot of great teammates, and I’m so proud of this group. All week my mom and my family told me to just go out there and play. That’s something that he would have wanted me to do, to just continue on and really just try and stay focused and understand that he’s at peace now.” “Nobody deserves it more than this guy on my right right here, man,” said Brown, sitting next to Horford at a postgame press conference. But he scored just 8 points over the final two games. No player in NBA history has played more playoff games before reaching the Finals.
