A man is dead after being shot by police, putting an end to afternoon lockdowns at multiple schools across the Port Union area of Scarborough.
He heard the man was taken away on a stretcher and that it looked as though they were doing CPR. Initial reports said the man was walking in the area with a rifle, police said. She didn't think much of it until the school's chat group started to buzz. He said the father of one of his friends saw a man "with a gun on his shoulder." Callers described him as wearing a white ball hat and a three-quarter length coat. She said some of the students were "terrified" of making noise, so they used a whiteboard to talk to each other.
Officers responded to reports of a man in his late teens or early 20s carrying a firearm in Scarborough's Port Union area.
Two other schools – Joseph Howe Senior public school and Sir Oliver Mowat Collegiate Institute – went into lockdown. The scare comes as the US reckons with its worst school shooting in a decade. The Toronto district school board said two schools – Charlottetown Junior public school and Centennial Road Junior public school – went into “hold and secure” mode.
Toronto police said on Twitter that officers were called to the area of Marberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday.
“I know a lot of parents are going to be stressed out with something like this, especially with everything that happened in the States so far. I don’t even know how I feel still at this moment, I’m still just in shock that this could happen but I’m just glad everyone is safe. He said when he got inside, they were already on the phone with 911. The man said he tried to call 911 but couldn’t immediately get through, and decided to run into a nearby school that his kids attend and tell them to go into lockdown. I don’t speculate and suggest that it’s something similar to what’s happened in the United States…. But let’s face it, as a police agency with all our partners in policing, we are aware of world events.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath issued a statement thanking Toronto Police and saying that “guns have no place on our streets.” School officials in Toronto said they would send counsellors Friday to the affected schools. And at 4:30 p.m. ET she received another e-mail from the principal explaining the actions that teachers took to keep their pupils safe. “They responded according to their training,” said Jon Reid, a police union leader. Police confronted the gunman on a street around 1:30 p.m. ET and about 150 metres away from William G. Davis school. “So I don’t want to speculate that it is something similar to what’s happened in the United States.” Chief Ramer also did not respond to questions about what kind of weapon the man was carrying. “We have no understanding at this point in time what was about to happen or what could have happened,” Chief Ramer said. The identity of the man has not been released. He cautioned the public against concluding that a school shooting was thwarted. Police and school officials caution that they have little information about the Toronto man or his motives. It’s a difficult thing,” Toronto Police Chief James Ramer told reporters at the scene.

Lawyer Caryma Sa'd says it was reprisal for her criticism of Ford government; police say she was part of protest blocking access to a campaign event.
“There are tweets that Doug Ford has put out, encouraging people to sign up and attend. They say at 5:30 p.m. or so, Ford attended the airport on a campaign stop and a protest formed outside the event. But for Doug Ford, I have a real interest in provincial politics. All individuals complied, but one individual refused to move and was arrested. The individual was transported off the property and immediately released with a ticket for Trespass to Property,” the statement reads. And I’m therefore not invited to the event,” Sa’d said. “They basically just drove me off the property to write the ticket. “You’re not welcome at these events. Someone who would end the nine-year Ontario Disability Support Program freeze and significantly increase support for people with serious disabilities. We need to restore permanent, dependable, long-term support for the TTC. More than 25 years ago, the province cut all operating transfers to TTC. Service shrank and fares went up. Loopholes have pushed Toronto rents up faster than inflation; a Toronto champion would close them. There’s a clear plan of action — we just need to follow it.

The Toronto Raptors appear to be interested in Marquette's NBA Draft prospect Justin Lewis who posted an Instagram in Toronto.
He’s not going to create a ton of shots for himself or teammates, but there’s enough ability here to think it can work. He has a long, projectable frame, but doesn’t always put it to use in the flow of the game—if Lewis embraces doing the small stuff, there’s a pathway to him becoming a valuable contributor. "Lewis comes off a breakout sophomore season, in which he emerged as a legitimate perimeter shooter with complementary skills as a rebounder and defender," wrote Woo. "There’s reason to buy his improved jumper, and he fits a viable mold as an athletic, floor-spacing forward (think Trey Murphy in last year’s draft) if he stays on track.
Brett Seney, Josh Ho-Sang, Joseph Blandisi, Jack Kopacka, Rich Clune, Marc Michaelis, Michael Hutchinson and Teemu Kivihalme will all be UFA's come July 13.
Every player wants to be in the NHL and I’m not sure it matters to him if it’s Toronto or not. He would, though, be a good veteran player who could work with the younger Marlies, so I would support the decision to bring him back. All eyes were set on Ho-Sang early in the season after he returned home to play in the organization he grew up idolizing. Ultimately, Michaelis only brought in 13 points over the span of this season and Toronto might be looking elsewhere for someone to produce. The 26-year-old spent a majority of the season out with an injury and only played 22 games this year. The most interesting RFA case to me is Chad Krys. He was a steady defenceman for the Marlies throughout their season, but the 24-year-old didn’t turn any heads.
