Not all of his dangles worked as intended, but he did enough to chip in on 10 Grade A shots by the Oilers, a splendid total. Did struggle on the dot at just 2/12=17% on a night the Oilers as a team won just a third of all draws. Not at his best after a whirlwind couple of days, misfiring on a few shots and a pass that went -200 feet and taking an unnecessary penalty. Lost a battle along the end wall on the game’s first goal, but got that back with authority when his one-timer from the high slot rattled in off the point to tie it 4-4. Clearly has won the coach’s trust at the 3C position and with good reason based on his 14:39 of excellent play. Leaked in a couple of questionable goals in short order during the 4-goal outburst, but ended it with a good stop off Elias Lindholm at the edge of the crease. Just 2 shots of his own, both dangerous, but was a passing machine with 4 assists and a number of other splendid setups off both sides of his stick. Nearly gave the Oilers the lead minutes later when he picked off a stray puck in the neutral zone and blazed in on a shorthanded breakaway. His boxcars of 0-0-0, -1 were reflective of the entire series that saw him post 0-0-0, -5 in barely half an hour of ice time. Played his best game of the series and contributed a huge goal that tied the game at 2-2. 2 shots, 2 blocks, and a decent 4/7=57% on a night the Oilers as a team struggled on the faceoff dot. The sixth playoff edition of the Battle of Alberta came to an early but fitting close on Thursday, even as the game itself required a little extra time.

The Oilers will now await the winner of the Colorado Avalanche-St. Louis Blues series, with the Avalanche up 3-2 heading into Game 6 of that series Friday ...

The teams set a new NHL mark for fastest four goals in a playoff game, sharing two each over a span of just 1:11. “The goal was to make the playoffs,” he said. Fans at the Saddledome will likely take a long time to digest the overturning of what appeared to be a go-ahead goal from Blake Coleman with 5:57 remaining in regulation. I haven’t watched it enough but at live speed I felt like I was in a battle and just my understanding is you can direct the puck but you just can’t kick it.” And we’ve had to learn a lot of lessons along the way.” Draisaitl’s first assist of the night allowed him to reach the 50-playoff-point mark in just his 32nd career postseason game.

The Day After: The Edmonton Oilers are conference finals bound (Oilers Nation)

In the first Battle of Alberta in over 30 years, things sure didn't disappoint. 45 goals came over the course of the series that saw numerous records be broken.

St. Louis is a team that has been there, and done that before winning the cup in recent years. - It was, without a doubt, a bad break for the Flames. It’s a tight call that clearly didn’t go in Calgary’s way, but the truth of the matter is why was Coleman thinking even trying to do anything? The guys did a great job of hanging in there all night,” said McDavid. “Definitely wasn’t our best effort, but we stuck in there and got great performances from a bunch of different guys. Or that Zach Hyman scored as many goals in the series as Matthew Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm and Johnny Gaudreau combined. They’ve become the sixth and seventh players to record 26+ points in the first 12 points of a postseason. Maybe he didn’t have those jaw-dropping moments we saw earlier in the series, but he still fired four shots on goal and the Oilers controlled the pace of play and the goals with him on the ice at 5×5. There was no shortage of offence, no shortage of rough stuff after the whistles, and no shortage of storylines. Heading into game two, the lines were juggled and all of a sudden, this was Edmonton’s series to lose — not Calgary’s to win. The feed from Leon Draisaitl on the half-wall saw Connor walk into the slot and end it. Hyman’s tally kicked off a record-setting 1:11 that saw four goals scored, the fastest time in which that happened in playoff history. Darnell Nurse. Jesse Puljujarvi. Zach Hyman. Three big goals that all of a sudden got the Oilers back in front. Sure, the first 66 minutes of the series were far from ideal where the Oilers allowed a staggering 11 goals against in moments that those dreaded nerves took over.

Oilers' stars shine bright — and extinguish Flames in the process (Sportsnet.ca)

The Edmonton Oilers' best players were the best players in the Battle of Alberta, while the Calgary Flames' top players came up small.

“But we always felt that we had the ability to score for us. He pushed more of the right buttons than the sage Darryl Sutter in this series, and got more hockey out of more people. This one was wildly entertaining, but it was a five-game rout where the better team is the one moving on. And as the series went on, we got better at that. We’re proud of the different runs that the team has gone on throughout the years. But Draisaitl only played five games — counting three points in three of them and four in the other two. Five Oilers had that many or more, while Draisaitl had three more points than the entire Flames first line combined. Give the first-time head coach some credit. It was real fun, and the fans were amazing in both buildings, especially in Edmonton. Just the energy and the vibe around the city has been amazing.” Now, Edmonton awaits the winner of Colorado and St. Louis, with most fans hoping for a showdown between McDavid, Makar and MacKinnon. We celebrate this for a day, tonight maybe, be proud of it, happy. “Special — special to win.

Thousands of Oilers fans sang fresh six-year-old Ben Stelter "Happy Birthday" from Rogers Place Thursday night.

With 26 cases of monkeypox now confirmed in Canada, health officials warn that number will likely grow in the coming days and weeks. Only three players in NHL history posted a longer streak of point games than the centre player, including Jari Kurri, Bobby Orr, and Wayne Gretzky — none of whom did so during playoff play. Following their 5-4 victory over Calgary, which secured Edmonton's spot in the next round of playoffs, the Oilers posted a message to Ben from No. 29 Leon Draisaitl. We're excited to see you in round three." "When I walked into that room (in) February, I was bullish on our players because I saw a sincere desire to win. "We're going to rest up and recuperate. But the goal was waved off following a video review after it was ruled the winger kicked the puck over Smith's goal line as he battled with Oilers defenceman Cody Ceci. "My understanding is you can direct the puck, but you just can't kick it. "I just tried to get my legs going," McDavid said of the winner. And the amount of plays that he makes for our team is unbelievable. "He was amazing," McDavid said of his linemate. Colorado leads that series 3-2, with Game 6 set for Friday in St. Louis. "With what Connor's done, Leon's performance has gone under the radar a little bit," said Oilers interim head coach Jay Woodcroft, who replaced the fired Dave Tippett on Feb. 10 and now has Edmonton eight wins from the Stanley Cup. "He's the best passer in the National Hockey League — the best passer in the world. "The guys did a great job of hanging in there all night. He's done it all season, he's done it all his career. Got great performances from a bunch of different guys.

The Edmonton Oilers : Canada's Team (The Copper & Blue)

The Edmonton Oilers are going to the Western Conference Championship after their dramatic overtime victory in game 5. Congratulations to the Calgary Flames ...

For now, Canada’s Team will have to wait for the winner of the Blues / Avalanche series. They took the Pacific Division, they had 50 wins along the way. There’s still some room on the wagon for everyone else. Five different Oilers helped tuck the Flames to bed. The Flames had an excellent regular season. We’ll see you in the fall.

Never mind the disallowed goal, Flames couldn't keep up with the ... (Sportsnet.ca)

The Calgary Flames built their reputation on Darryl Sutter Hockey – that heavy-forechecking, quality-defending style that smothers opponents and wins back ...

He ended up posting just an .852 save percentage in the series, and the crease was supposed to be where the Flames had a clear advantage. That’s what’s been happening for the Oilers, and no matter who their next opponent is, that game plan has every chance of being effective in yet another round. In Game 5, the Oilers had 18 slot shots to the Flames' nine. There was a desperation there that we hadn’t seen from the Flames, and by Game 5 I kept thinking, “Just catch the pass and shoot it” rather than trying to rush a one-timer on a hot pass or on one that was in a bad spot. In the summer, I use a plastic oar to stir my kids’ kiddie pool and get the water going in a “whirlpool,” and that’s what happens when Hyman is on the ice. The Edmonton Oilers can be given no greater compliment than the way the Flames were reduced to playing in the Battle of Alberta, chasing more and more offence to try to keep up with an Oilers top-six that simply could not be stopped. The roller coaster Mike Smith Experience includes the type of highs you need to get by great opponents, and Woodcroft gave their team the chance to see that through. But I just couldn’t. How could I? Everything about the Oilers hinged on this, with two players combining for **checks stats** – no, that can’t be right – **checks again** 29 points in five games. This is speculation on my part, but I don’t think the Oil loved how Kane defended a Flames set breakout early in the game, followed by his positioning on the Andrew Mangiapane goal. The Flames played with offensive impatience, which left room for the Oilers to fly back the other way. On the backs of that plan, the Flames allowed the third-fewest goals during the regular season. The Calgary Flames built their reputation on Darryl Sutter Hockey – that heavy-forechecking, quality-defending style that smothers opponents and wins back pucks, which makes the burden of creating offence a struggle for their opposition.

Darren Dreger says he can see Ken Holland giving more term than ... (Oilers Nation)

Darren Dreger was on TSN 1050's OverDrive show on Wednesday and he said that he could see Holland more willing to give Kane some extra term on a contract ...

Given the way he’s played with the Oilers, Kane will be one of the top options on the free-agent market for teams looking for a scorer. Kane was in the fourth year of a seven-year, $49 million contract and forfeited the remaining $22.8 million on the deal. Dreger went on to add that Holland might retire when his contract comes to an end in 2024, so he might not be concerned about the term of a given deal going beyond that.

Enjoy It Oilers Fans (Oilers Nation)

Stanley Cup Playoff success is never guaranteed. We've witnessed elite teams lose in the first round on numerous occasions. Winning the Stanley Cup is ...

And enjoy a trip back to the third round. LA hasn’t returned since winning the Cup in 2014. Calgary set a record in game when they scored two goals in the first 51 seconds. We saw four, three and two-goal leads evaporate in four of the five games. To score three points in five straight games against the same team. In game four he became the first player to have four consecutive games with three or more points. Both times the Oilers trailed 2-0 on the road, but they managed to stay in the game and eventually won. Middleton finished with 19 points in a seven-game victory over the Buffalo Sabres in 1983. He tied Rick Middleton for most points in the first five games of a series. The Oilers’ ability to overcome adversity has been on display since losing in OT v. I’d guess yes because winning in the playoffs captures the heart, imagination and of fans. Oilers fans, 40 years of age and younger, had never experienced the heightened emotions of a playoff Battle of Alberta. The energy and angst in round two were much higher than round one v.

Oilers have finally put together a team worthy of McDavid (The Globe and Mail)

After years of hiding McDavid away, the NHL's best player finally has a chance to be more visible as the Oilers make the Western Conference finals.

In playoffs past, either the Oilers stank, or McDavid was mediocre, or the goalie was trying to make saves with his head. That would suggest an insurmountable structural problem with the Oilers or – much worse – a weird personal lack in McDavid. If the best in the game can’t win when he’s playing his best, then what does “best” actually mean? Given the connected age we live in, it seems a sort of miracle that the NHL has managed to hide McDavid so well. In the overtime period, Connor McDavid got the puck in an awkward position, levitated between two guys and flipped it into the net. He’s the drink. Has there ever been a more anonymous best in the world? The puck was on its way in whether Coleman touched it or not. Let us say for the sake of argument that Calgary had won this series. After years of pining, the city has a team worth caring about. What he did was fall into the puck. Coleman spent the whole time he was heading into the net going ass over teakettle. When the laws of physics and/or logic don’t apply, you can steer matters toward any outcome you want.

OILERS NOTES: The Oilers' top players outperformed the Flames ... (Sault Star)

The Oilers disposed of the Flames in the Stanley Cup playoffs because their top players clearly outplayed Calgary's top dogs.

“Big goal for Jesse. He’s stuck with it and all through the series I thought he was bringing a lot of energy. There’s a lot of sacrifice to his game at this time of year, with the blocking of shots, to making hard plays on the wall. Hyman had seven shots on Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom in Game 5, recording a goal and three points. That still looks like a good goal by Coleman late in the third, off his skate in the blue-paint, but the Flames couldn’t blame referees Wes McCauley and Eric Furlatt for wiping it out. Hyman, who subbed in for Kane after the first period in Game 5, scored in every game. We’ve had to learn a lot of lessons along the way and it’s got us to this point, and, obviously, we want to keep going here.”

McDavid ends wild Battle of Alberta with game 5 OT winner, Oilers ... (KamloopsBCNow)

Edmonton won the series 4-1 and will now play either the Colorado Avalanche or St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference final.

Colorado is up 3-2 on St. Louis with a chance to close out the series in game six this evening, but it will be a tall task on the road against the pesky Blues. The Canes have a 3-2 lead in that series and game six will be played at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night. While that was surprisingly McDavid’s first point of the night, Draisaitl had four assists in game five to increase his series total to 17 points in five games. Five minutes later, Zach Hyman gave Edmonton the lead and started a wild stretch of four goals in just 71 seconds, the four fastest playoff goals of all time in the NHL. But the disallowed goal paved the way for overtime and it didn’t take long for McDavid to be the difference maker. A seven-goal period started with Mikael Backlund doubling the Flames lead, but the Oilers quickly countered with goals from Darnell Nurse and Jesse Puljujarvi to tie it up.
