Suspect shot dead by Toronto police after schools locked down over ... (CBC.ca)

A man is dead after being shot by police, putting an end to afternoon lockdowns at multiple schools across the Port Union area of Scarborough.

He heard the man was taken away on a stretcher and that it looked as though they were doing CPR. Initial reports said the man was walking in the area with a rifle, police said. She didn't think much of it until the school's chat group started to buzz. He said the father of one of his friends saw a man "with a gun on his shoulder." Callers described him as wearing a white ball hat and a three-quarter length coat. She said some of the students were "terrified" of making noise, so they used a whiteboard to talk to each other.

Suspect dead after police-involved shooting near Toronto school (Globalnews.ca)

Toronto police said on Twitter that officers were called to the area of Marberley Crescent and Oxhorn Road shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday.

“I know a lot of parents are going to be stressed out with something like this, especially with everything that happened in the States so far. I don’t even know how I feel still at this moment, I’m still just in shock that this could happen but I’m just glad everyone is safe. He said when he got inside, they were already on the phone with 911. The man said he tried to call 911 but couldn’t immediately get through, and decided to run into a nearby school that his kids attend and tell them to go into lockdown. I don’t speculate and suggest that it’s something similar to what’s happened in the United States…. But let’s face it, as a police agency with all our partners in policing, we are aware of world events.

The safety of everyone in our city is our priority," Tory said. And that being said, it would be great if anyone does have any information to please reach out to the SIU to assist with this," she said. Given recent tragic events, I can't imagine the fear felt by kids, teachers, and parents until the lockdown was lifted. So I don't want to speculate and suggest that it's something similar to what's happened in the United States," he added, referring to a mass shooting earlier this week at an elementary school in Texas. And that's why the training that our staff and students go underway is so important." At this time, the SIU has not yet identified the man," Denette said. "Whether the man was holding it or not, I'm not entirely certain at this point. No one should have to feel that fear and I'm so thankful everyone in the school was able to safely go home tonight. In this case, obviously, that's a concerning situation," TDSB spokesperson Ryan Bird said. So because of those lockdown drills, when it does happen for real, students and staff generally know what to do. But obviously, when you have a shooting nearby, that's really concerning. "Let's not speculate as to what's occurred here today and what was happening.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath issued a statement thanking Toronto Police and saying that “guns have no place on our streets.” School officials in Toronto said they would send counsellors Friday to the affected schools. And at 4:30 p.m. ET she received another e-mail from the principal explaining the actions that teachers took to keep their pupils safe. “They responded according to their training,” said Jon Reid, a police union leader. Police confronted the gunman on a street around 1:30 p.m. ET and about 150 metres away from William G. Davis school. “So I don’t want to speculate that it is something similar to what’s happened in the United States.” Chief Ramer also did not respond to questions about what kind of weapon the man was carrying. “We have no understanding at this point in time what was about to happen or what could have happened,” Chief Ramer said. The identity of the man has not been released. He cautioned the public against concluding that a school shooting was thwarted. Police and school officials caution that they have little information about the Toronto man or his motives. It’s a difficult thing,” Toronto Police Chief James Ramer told reporters at the scene.

GUELPH, Ont. — The expansion Scarborough Shooting Stars and rapper J. Cole left as losers Thursday night in their Canadian Elite Basketball League debut.

With Guelph up 79-76 with under four minutes to play, nine points were added to that three-point lead — making for a target of 12 points or the first team to reach 88 to win. Scarborough led 66-64 going into the final quarter with Cole on the floor and collecting his first rebound. Guelph trailed 25-24 at the end of the first quarter but led 43-42 at the half. He entered the game again with 7:08 remaining in the second quarter. He was "dismissed and disqualified" from the league last July for violating the terms of the NBA/NBPA anti-drug program.
