Williams, meanwhile, is also dealing with ongoing soreness, and his stems from the left knee that has given him a variety of issues for the past two months. Smart has been dealing with the right ankle sprain that held him out of Game 4. The games we lost, we had 39 turnovers. In their two losses, they've thrown the ball all over the gym, allowing the Heat to get one easy transition basket after another. But coming off wins, Boston is a dismal 1-4, with its lone victory coming at home in Game 7 against Milwaukee. We should kind of look at it as a new series, and tonight is a must-win game.
The Eastern Conference finals return to Miami on Wednesday with the Celtics and Heat tied at two games apiece. Boston dominated Miami in Game 4, 102-82, ...
P.J. Tucker's crashes form the corner (three ORBs) and Jaylen Brown's wayward dribbling (four turnovers) have been particularly large contributors to the trend. Can the Celtics go super small, too, without getting bludgeoned even worse on the offensive glass than they were in the first? He's waving over at the Celtics bench trying to stay in the game. It’s about who is less worse. Four fouls on Kyle Lowry, and you wonder if Boston wishes it could decline the penalty. •3h ago •3h ago The Heat are currently 5/35 (14.3%) entering the 4th quarter. •3h ago As the Heat stars faded over the course of the night, with only Adebayo giving them a last gasp chance early in the fourth, the Celtics’ best players took over late and put this one to bed. We're all guilty of overreacting to the last game, but the Heat to me looked like a team that might have run out of gas in the tank and cards left to play against this Celtics defense. It feels like the Celtics core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Al Horford has been together forever.
The Miami Heat have not gone to Markieff Morris against the Boston Celtics.
With Miami struggling the way they are, Marcus wonders if perhaps it's time to shake things up. The veteran forward struggled in his limited time, hitting just 33% of his shots from deep, which is primarily what Miami would be relying on him to do well if he were to see any time. Without Jimmy Butler playing at the elite level he has flashed at times this postseason, Miami has looked overmatched by a Boston Celtics team that flexes a stifling defense.
After Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr's emotional speech about the Texas school shooting on Tuesday, the Miami Heat took some action on Wednesday.
"You can also make change at the ballot box." I think everybody is trying to figure out a way to be heard, to force some kind of change from the people that can make change. “I think there’s certainly -- after continued events, there’s a call to action.
Chris Mannix and Howard Beck break down an ugly Eastern Conference finals that has been back and forth, and why Jayson Tatum is the key to the Celtics ...
And it is the one thing as you know, Chris, ’cause we talked about it in the weeks and months leading to the postseason, it was the one concern I had with the Heat. I admire the heck out of what they’re doing, but I don’t know if a team without an elite scorer can make it all the way in this league. So yeah, I think the Celtics win the next two. So I looked this up because I was curious: Jimmy averaged 21.4 points a game in the regular season. And I think that will play out over the rest of this series. He comes out, has 10 points in the first quarter, plays all 12 minutes, plays a lot of minutes in the first half. And the real outlier of the final four in these playoffs … I was looking this up, so Jimmy Butler, you and I both know, and he’s hurt right now, he’s dragging a little bit. So last year, Giannis, 28 points a game in the regular season. Howard Beck: I used to use as a reference point, when I try to explain to people and remind myself, Chris, that the playoffs are really unpredictable sometimes, and that no single game is necessarily indicative of a series. In fact, I would predict them to win the next two games of the series, if they are healthy-ish. But I was at Game 4 in Boston and my biggest takeaway, Howard, is that the Celtics are just better. They committed 24 turnovers in Game 3, that led to 33 points from Miami. They had the ball deflected 29 times, I think it was a playoff high for this year by Miami. They did it to themselves in Game 3. And that is protect the ball in Game 3.
Heading into Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals, it's hard not to think that the Bam Adebayo's early-career legacy is on the line for the Miami Heat.
Then, in Game 4, just five. In Game 2, just six. In Game 4, Bam only took five shots and finished with just nine points and six rebounds.

Game 6 is in Boston on Friday night, where a pair of trophies bearing the names of Celtics legends will be waiting. The turnaround was 59-58 Boston to 83-60 Boston. The Heat were 7 for 45 from 3-point range. They believe their defense, as has been the case time and again in these playoffs, will eventually wear down teams.
The Miami Heat head into what is sizing up to a be a must-win Game 5 matchup in their Eastern Conference Finals slugfest with the Boston Celtics.
The Miami Heat have the means to stop Jayson Tatum or at least, slow him down. Of course, that seems to be P.J. Tucker, which is who you absolutely want. If you look at all of Tatum’s buckets in his 31-point Game 4 performance, none of them were scored while Adebayo, Butler, or Tucker, especially, were the primary or core defender. On top of just Tucker though, you feel comfortable if it’s either P.J., Jimmy Butler, or Bam Adebayo tasked with the matchup. That also speaks more towards the offense. That’s the bare minimum.

It seems as though the Heat took that cue to heart. “You can also make change at the ballot box.” The Heat followed by urging fans to reach out to their state senators to advocate for gun reform, with the team announcer also encouraging people to vote this fall to make their voices heard.

This season, Herro has shot nearly 45% from the floor and averaged a career-high 20.7 points per game. Herro has been away from the court since 8:11 mark of the fourth quarter in Game 3 of the series Saturday. Entering Monday, Miami was looking to secure a 3-1 advantage before returning home. Miami announced Tyler Herro will not play Wednesday when the Heat face the Celtics in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals due to a groin injury he suffered in Game 3.

Smart missed Game 4 because of a sprained right ankle. MIAMI (AP) — Tyler Herro's strained left groin forced the Miami Heat to rule him out of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night. Tyler Herro's strained left groin forced the Miami Heat to rule him out of Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.
The Miami Heat played on half of ball worthy of winning Game 5 on Wednesday. But, one half won't ever win a game, which is why they were defeated.
However, the Miami Heat were able to be the best team in the first half because they outworked Boston. Listen, they can force a Game 7. They didn’t always take full advantage of those created or extra opportunities, but they were putting themselves in the position to be able to do so. It was tough to watch. Which is the next thing. In case you’re no mathematician, that’s a cool 15.6 percent from three-point territory.
Sixth man Tyler Herro will not be available for the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals because of a strained left groin.
The Celtics will have their full rotation available for Game 5. But Butler did struggle in Game 4 with six points on 3-of-14 shooting from the field. Wednesday marks just the eighth game that Lowry, 36, has played in this postseason, as his hamstring injury has forced him to miss eight playoff games. Guard Victor Oladipo will be relied on play a bigger offensive role off the Heat’s bench to help fill some of the void Herro leaves behind. But he was one of the Heat’s top offensive weapons in the regular season, averaging 20.7 points on a team-high 17 shots per game. ESPN reported on Tuesday that Herro’s groin injury would keep him out for two to four weeks in the regular season, but he’s pushing to play through the pain.
Jaylen Brown was the face of the Celtics' turnaround Wednesday night as they beat the Heat to put themselves on the brink of advancing to the NBA Finals.
Getting on to Boston and figuring that out collectively, those are the emotions and the breakthroughs that you have that you remember the rest of your life. Brown and Tatum certainly did so in the second half. The job's just not finished yet." It was unclear whether Boston was going to be able to actually follow through on Brown's instructions after yet another ugly stretch of basketball in this series for the Celtics in the first half of Game 5. It was a game that, like the rest of this series, will never be called pretty. Its starting backcourt of Kyle Lowry and Max Strus combined to go 0-for-15 from the field and 0-for-12 from 3-point range for the game. "Same player," Brown said from the first half to the second. As the game wears on, some of that energy, some of that intensity starts to wear off, so the game opens up a little bit. While Tatum and Brown were combining to go 10-for-33 in the first half, and the Celtics were throwing the ball around, Miami couldn't hit anything, either. [Just] come out, play basketball in the second half." I didn't want to look into the past, think that this game was over. "We weren't playing our best, in a lot of ways," Celtics coach Ime Udoka said.
A moment of silence was held before the announcement, made Wednesday night at a playoff game.

In 2018, Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra and players visited Parkland after 17 students were killed in shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High.
The rest of that 2017-2018 season, the Heat wore “MSD” patches on the jerseys and created a scholarship in the names of students who were Heat fans. “But it just continues to happen.” I think everybody is trying to figure out a way to be heard, to force some kind of change from the people that can make change.

"Sadness and disbelief," he tweeted Tuesday evening. The team held a moment of silence at FTX Arena prior to tipoff, remembering the lives that were lost during the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday.

Horford, who is averaging 12 points in the playoffs, had 16 points. Although the Heat are shooting 44 percent in the playoffs, they shot under 35 percent for the second consecutive game. They are shooting just 31 percent from the three-point line in the playoffs.
A moment of silence was held before the announcement, made Wednesday night at a playoff game.
I'm tired of moments of silence. "I'm so tired of getting up here and offering condolences to the devastated families that are out there. Other teams have held moments of silence since the shooting.
After the elementary-school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, the Miami Heat held a moment of silence prior to Game 5 then made a statement.
The Heat did not specify which gun laws they deem to be “commonsense.” NBA teams continue to rapidly shed their apolitical stances. You can also make change at the ballot box.
Miami isn't making anything close to injury excuses, but the writing is on the wall.
He pleaded for time to look at the film for a better understanding, but he said he thought the Heat were getting good shots in the first half, competed defensively and were in position to win the game into the third quarter (this is true — Miami led by five at halftime). He said missed shots mounting in the third led to some defensive lapses. Robinson is back in it, and he’s hit seven 3s and scored 25 points in the last two games. Whatever he gives will be much appreciated, but the Heat will need the other players used in the rotation operating at the highest capacity. With Williams and Al Horford in the lineup together, Adebayo has much less room to go to work with the ball. Lowry’s return in Game 3 of this series, after missing Miami’s previous four games, made sense at the time, especially if he was in a better position to make an impact than he was when he tried his first comeback during the Philadelphia series. He missed a bunch of 3s, but Vincent was able to beat Smart and others off the dribble. After scoring 70 points in Games 1 and 2 of this series, and posting six games of 30 or more points in these playoffs, Butler has shot 10 of 35 in the last three games. What is going on with him is a terrible shooting slump at the worst possible time. Lowry won an NBA title in 2019 with the Raptors. He’s a six-time All-Star. He’s been hailed for years as an excellent, disruptive defender. In the last two games, Lowry and Strus are 1-of-28. But he has not been able to make a dent in the last two games, and because of everything else going wrong with Miami, the Heat can ill afford to literally get nothing out of their starting point guard. And let’s be clear about that,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra interjected Wednesday after Miami sputtered badly in the second half of a 93-80 loss to the Celtics.

The Miami Heat have gone as far as they have this season on the back of Jimmy Butler. And though he won't say it or make excuses, he's hurting out there.
However, for a guy that has, again, been the second-best player, at worst, in the NBA Playoffs up until he tweaked that knee, you have to acknowledge what you’re seeing. After a knee injury that caused him to miss the second half of Game 3, Jimmy Butler hasn’t been the same guy that he was prior to the injury. At the very least, you just hope he isn’t risking long-term health, though you appreciate him fighting through it. That doesn’t excuse the rest of the poor play tonight from the Heat. It could never be just “Jimmy save us” to beat a team like Boston. The Heat pride themselves on everyone doing their part. The Miami Heat are officially in a do-or-die scenario.

Jimmy Butler has been their only real “go-to” scorer and with him not looking right due to a lingering knee issue, the Heat’s offense has been dead at times. At just 24-year-old, Williams has quickly turned himself into a high-impact defensive center in the NBA. This piece is another elite-level scoring option next to Butler and while Bam Adebayo could be this type of player, he has proven in these playoffs that his production on offense can be very streaky. Boston has five players in their starting rotation that received All-Defense consideration this season and this is not a coincidence. Perhaps the biggest adjustment Boston has made on defense is not allowing Max Strus and other perimeter players to feel comfortable. Heat starting point guard Kyle Lowry returned from a strained left hamstring in Game 3 of the East finals and has not looked anything close to his usual self. The Celtics are also dealing with injuries to key players but have been able to overcome it so far in this series. “Look, they are a great defense,” Spoelstra said of the Celtics. “It’s not like we’re going to score 130. Miami’s offensive performance in Game 5 also marked the third time in NBA history that a team has shot worse than 16 percent on 35 or more three-point attempts in a playoff game. The Heat’s offense has yet to even come close to solving the Boston Celtics’ elite defense, and injuries have looked to limit some of Miami’s best players. The Celtics, which closed the regular season with the NBA’s top defensive rating, has suffocated the life out of the Heat’s offense in the last two games.

The Miami Heat's big 2021 offseason move was a sign-and-trade transaction to give up Goran Dragic and Precious Achiuwa for Kyle Lowry.
Lowry scored 11 points in Game 3 — which is actually his high for a playoff game this year. But with both Jimmy Butler and Lowry clearly limited with injuries, the Heat offense looks too anemic to make a sixth Finals appearance. And Lowry had great moments in his first season with the Heat. During large portions of the season without Bam Adebayo and/or Jimmy Butler, Lowry led a rotation of mostly minimum-salary guys to impressive wins. He looked hurt in Games 3 and 4 of the Heat’s second-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers. His performance in Game 5 last night was hard to watch — zero points, zero assists, three turnovers and five fouls in 25 minutes. The real season is here.
Miami HEAT vs. Boston Celtics Friday, May 27 @ 8:30 PM Series Record: 3-2 Boston.
A huge portion of the game was decided by the HEAT winning the turnover battle, 23-8, and taking 22 more shots than their opponent, but this was a battle of the mind more than anything. In other words, precisely because the defense is so good and both teams have some inherent struggles in the halfcourt, we’re more likely than usual to see one run get extended as the other side is pushed more and more onto their heels. The HEAT ramped up the physicality on defense, found just enough shotmaking – Max Strus and Adebayo each hit a massive jumper after Boston closed to within one – and responded to one momentum-building one after another. Instead what we’re getting is a series where both defenses have indeed been great, but each game has seen one team lead by at least 20 – Boston’s near-comeback in Game 3 was the only real pushback we’ve seen from a big hole – because as soon as one defense gets rolling then the other team starts to struggle even more having to attack in the halfcourt, and the more that team misses the more the other side can try to push the pace. And in the end, that opening salvo offered a large enough lead to put Miami up 2-1 in the series. In winning the opening period, 39-18, the HEAT had just about as immaculate a start to a postseason game as you can possibly have. Both teams are going to come out of this one with plenty to like – Boston wound up winning three of the four quarters – and if you came into this game expecting a long series there wasn’t much on hand to dissuade you of that notion. With Kyle Lowry back, his effect on the pace of the offense, both in the open floor and in the halfcourt, was immediately evident as he pushed into a trail three for Max Strus and followed that up a few possessions later with his traditional hit-ahead pass to Jimmy Butler. But apart from Lowry and some hot three-point shooting, the real boost to the offense was Bam Adebayo scoring about as well as he has ever scored. And as usual – after Boston made a run with Butler off the court – he was there to bring it home down the stretch as he hunted the Payton Pritchard matchup relentlessly, holding the Celtics off with free-throws and jumpers. Boston was up by as much as they were up – 34 at the largest lead, but consistently over after their major runs – because they were hitting just about everything. Just as quick as Game 1 turned after the break when the HEAT rediscovered their own identity playing physical and precise defense and letting that effort power their offense, this time Boston was the team finding itself. He wasn’t alone in doing so, but there’s a level of pressure that Butler can apply to your offense that makes every pass carry just a little more inherent risk to it – an effect that played a major role as the HEAT’s defense fed their offense over and over and over again in the third quarter.
