Calgary showed some life on slick power play in the second with Kane off for slashing. “Every game you play in the playoffs, you gain experience,” Smith said. This time, they took a stranglehold on the series without their best effort. “The main thing was that we had to keep pushing,” Nugent-Hopkins said after Rasmus Andersson scored short-handed from 150 feet away as Calgary rallied all the way back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game. “I can laugh now, right?” a relieved Smith said. He scored his third. We’ve just got to go home and focus on winning one game and take it from there. “You don’t want that to happen ... ever. “There’s room for greatness from everybody on our team. Calgary winger Tyler Toffoli then took a tripping penalty and the Oilers made the Flames pay when Hyman outmuscled a hobbled Chris Tanev — back in the lineup for the first time since Game 6 of the opening round despite a suspected upper-body injury — in tight, scoring his fifth goal of the series and seventh of the playoffs at 9:53. “Stuff like that happens, it’s hockey. Nugent-Hopkins scored his second goal of the game with 3:27 left in regulation, and the Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 5-3 to take a 3-1 lead in the second-round playoff series.

Nugent-Hopkins scores twice, Oilers survive Smith's blunder to grab ... (Lethbridge Herald)

EDMONTON - Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has suffered through plenty of heartache in the Alberta capital. The top pick at the 2011 draft missed the playoffs in.

“Connor is the best player in the world and is going to do some damage out there, but he can’t stay on the ice for the whole game. “Every game you play in the playoffs, you gain experience,” Smith said. “It’s never perfect,” Smith said. “I can laugh now, right?” a relieved Smith said as throngs of Edmonton fans cheered wildly on the street outside the Oilers Hall of Fame Room where the team conducts its media availabilities. “The main thing was that we had to keep pushing,” Nugent-Hopkins said after Rasmus Andersson scored short-handed from 150 feet away to claw the visitors all the way back from a 3-0 deficit. “You don’t want that to happen … ever. We’ve just got to go home and focus on winning one game and take it from there. “There’s room for greatness from everybody on our team. Calgary winger Tyler Toffoli then took a tripping penalty and the Oilers made the visitors pay when Hyman outmuscled a hobbled Chris Tanev – back in the lineup for the first time since Game 6 of the opening round despite a suspected upper-body injury – in tight to bury his fifth of the series and seventh of the playoffs at 9:53. “There are ebbs and flows to a game, to a series, and they are all learning experiences.” “Stuff like that happens, it’s hockey. Nugent-Hopkins’ second goal of the night with 3:27 left in regulation was the difference after Oilers netminder Mike Smith stunningly whiffed a shot from the other end of the rink to tie the score as the Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 5-3 to take a 3-1 lead in the teams’ second-round playoff series.

In a perfect world, the two top lines play each other to a draw, and the Flames’ “superior” (on paper) depth should win the middle-six battle and help them win games. The Flames, on the other hand, are 0-9 when trailing a series 3-1. The team isn’t going to stop him like that every game, but they did on Tuesday and have nothing to show for it. On the Oilers’ first-period power-play goal, Hyman got position on Tanev at the goalmouth and banged home a rebound to make the game 2-0. For example, according to Natural Stat Trick, Toffoli has started 60 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone. Tanev, Sutter said, had wanted to play for the last two games against Edmonton. That he only played now, appears to be a joint decision from Tanev and team doctors: “It was up to him and the medical staff,” Sutter said. With Hanifin and Andersson on the ice, shot attempts were 10-8 in favour of the Flames. Maybe. But he’s also 74 games into the season and I couldn’t help but wonder if the giveaway 21 seconds into the game was a sign of fatigue. Shot attempts were even (16-16) with McDavid on the ice, and so were high danger chances (3-3) at five-on-five. 3. Chris Tanev played for the first time since leaving Game 6 in Dallas with an undisclosed injury. Do the Oilers have the book on him? Then came the big moments in the third period.

Markstrom, who had allowed 14 goals in the series before getting pulled after two periods with Calgary trailing Sunday's Game 3 by a 4-0 score line, played the puck behind his own net on the first shift, but put it right on Nugent-Hopkins' stick for him to bury his third inside a deafening arena. Edmonton Oilers Vs Calgary Flames- Game 4 Morning After (Oil On Whyte)

The Edmonton Oilers were able to walk out of Rogers Place with a 5-3 win last night against the Calgary Flames. The Oilers are now up 3-1 in the series.

The Oilers need to snuff the Flames out. I really liked how the Edmonton Oilers came out a played in that game 4. Late in the third period, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins restores the Edmonton Oilers lead. I would have liked Nurse to put some pressure on him, but if he does that the play on the side of the net has a chance on a pass. In the second period the Calgary Flames were able to get themselves back in the game. Last night the Edmonton Oilers got off to a quick start when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins put the puck in a wide open net after Jacob Markstrom fumbled a dump-in.

The series now shifts south to Calgary with the Oilers up 3-1 and hoping to put things away in game five on Thursday. Down a man, the Flames were unable to tie things up and instead gave up an empty-net goal to Kane that sealed the deal in game four. It was a brand new game, but the Oilers showed resilience and Nugent-Hopkins came to the rescue of Smith with his second goal of the game with just 4:27 to play, which restored Edmonton’s lead. All of a sudden, the game was tied on a shocking, 132-foot goal that deflated the packed crowd in Edmonton. Edmonton doubled their lead near the midway mark of the first with a powerplay goal off the stick of Zach Hyman and Evander Kane scored late in the frame to make it 3-0. And after a 5-3 win, their third straight in the series, the Edmonton Oilers have a 3-1 lead on the Calgary Flames and are just one win away from the Western Conference final.

It wasn’t pretty, but luckily for the veteran goaltender his teammate Ryan Nugent-Hopkins bailed him out by potting his second of the game with just 3:27 to play. Elias Lindholm’s power play marker at 9:04 of the middle stanza set the tone for an immediate response from Mikael Backlund on his fourth of the postseason. But despite the hilarity, the Oilers did get out to a scorching start.

Lowetide: Oilers' Ryan Nugent-Hopkins having effective playoffs ... (The Athletic)

It's easy to look past Nugent-Hopkins with all of the Oilers' star power but he's still an impact player.

Through the first 11 games of the playoffs, the Oilers have a five-on-five goal share of 58 percent (7-5) when Nuge is on the ice. In Game 6, the Nuge-Archibald-Ryan line played the opponents even in shots (4-4) in nine minutes, giving up several high danger chances and no goals. Game 4 saw Derick Brassard join the unit (Nuge, Archibald) and it was a disaster. Through the middle of the series against the Kings, his linemates included Ryan McLeod and Warren Foegele (Hyman was pretty much a constant). The Oilers scored 93 and allowed 73 during this period (38 games) leading up to the end of the regular season. He is also central to the penalty kill and has had power-play success. When McDavid played in the final 38 games, Edmonton’s five-on-five goal share was 63 percent (39-23) and represent the best outscoring run of his career. The Nuge line went 1-0 goals in the third game against the young Kings trio. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is having a good playoff run but very few were noticing before his two goals (one very early, one very late) against the Calgary Flames in Game 4 on Tuesday night. Draisaitl did flourish on the power play, scoring four goals and five points. The perception of the Oilers being a team whose results are divided by McDavid’s contributions goes back to his rookie season. Using Natural Stat Trick, the Oilers are 9-15 goals in the playoffs when McDavid is at rest.

“I think Ryan is someone who’s the longest-serving Oiler right now,” Woodcroft said. “You have people that are doing what they’re doing and the numbers they’re putting up, but Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was a first overall draft pick in the NHL for a reason. “The main thing was we had to keep pushing and 3-2, 3-3, the goal is to keep going. So was Sam Gagner, Ales Hemsky, Ryan Smyth and Shawn Horcoff. McDavid was playing Midget AAA with the Toronto Marlboros that year. As the longest serving member of the Edmonton Oilers, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has seen bigger names than him come and go over the years. In a game that could have gone sideways as the Flames overcame a 3-0 deficit to pull even at 3-3, Nugent-Hopkins turned out to be the go-to guy for coach Jay Woodcroft, leading all Oilers in ice time at 22:44.
