He faced significant resistance from the NRA and Republicans and soon abandoned the ideas. The NRA, established in 1871, boasts more than 5 million members. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) went viral online after he gave a speech in the Senate on Tuesday night pleading with his colleagues to put politics aside and work together to stop mass shootings. Trump has embraced the gun lobby, though after the Parkland high school shooting in 2018, he briefly expressed support for background checks for gun purchases and greater police power to seize guns from mentally disturbed people. Sen. John Cornyn (R) of Texas was also scheduled to speak but pulled out before the shooting for personal reasons requiring him to be in Washington on Friday, a spokesman said. “Why are we here if not to try and make sure fewer schools and fewer communities go through what Sandy Hook has gone through, what Uvalde is going through,” he said.

NRA Bans Firearms During Donald Trump's Speech at Texas Event (Newsweek)

The National Rifle Association will hold its conference in Houston this week, just days after 19 children and two adults were killed at Robb Elementary.

"You see Democrats and a lot of folks in the media whose immediate solution is to try to restrict the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens. It remains the deadliest mass shooting at an elementary school in U.S. history. The NRA said the hall was under the jurisdiction of the United States Secret Service as Trump would be speaking during the event. In a notice, the NRA said firearms, toy guns and "weapons of any kind" would not be allowed inside the hall. But a shadow has been cast over the conference after 19 children and two adults were fatally shot at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. On its website, the pro-gun organization declared that people would not be able to bring their firearms into the General Assembly Hall during its upcoming Annual Leadership Forum in Houston on Friday, May 27.

Estimates of the NRA’s membership vary, and the group is often accused of overstating its numbers. The NRA directly gave well over $600,000 to politicians during the 2020 elections, almost all of it to Republicans, according to the nonprofit monitoring group OpenSecrets. Today, it is one of the most influential of special interest groups, with a very large budget to influence Congressmen and Congresswomen on gun policy in the US. The NRA supported the National Firearms Act (NFA) of 1934, the first federal gun control law in the US, and then the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968, which put in place a system of licensing gun dealers and restricted certain categories of weapons, but opposed the proposal for building a national firearms registry. It was only in the 1930s that it entered the arena of political lobbying. The biggest and most powerful gun lobby group in the US is the National Rifle Association (NRA), which has for years mounted determined and fierce opposition to all efforts to reduce or restrict access to lethal firearms.

Gun rights groups, like the NRA and Gun Owners of America, spent $15.8 million on lobbying last year—and another $2 million in the first quarter of 2022.

Here’s how the list of politicians who have benefited from gun rights lobbying stands, minus 2021 contributions. That said, Texas Senator Ted Cruz has been the biggest beneficiary of those groups when it comes to campaign spending. Spending on House and Senate races generally pales in comparison to the amount these groups spend on presidential and gubernatorial elections. Gun control advocates have spent just $30 million since 1998. President Joe Biden, speaking Tuesday night, called for limits on the sale of powerful weapons. Lobbying spending by those groups set a new record in 2021, according to a report from OpenSecrets. Gun rights groups spend $15.8 million on lobbying last year, compared to just $2.9 million in lobbying from gun control groups.

“Again, my sincere condolences to those families.” It will feature talks from a group that includes former president Donald Trump, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, R, and Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. Abbott is expected to be in Uvalde on Wednesday before his talk at the NRA convention in Houston. You sacrificed those children’s lives for $1.2 million.” It didn’t take long for critics and liberals to slam him for taking more than $13 million in NRA contributions, according to Brady. “Obviously, my sincere condolences, but that’s not adequate. Others soon followed the online trend. “Why do we keep letting this happen? “Why are we willing to live with this carnage?” he said. Others took aim at those GOP lawmakers who expressed their anger at the shooting days before speaking at the NRA convention in Houston. When Cruz tweeted that he and his wife, Heidi, were “fervently lifting up in prayer the children and families in the horrific shooting in Uvalde,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., wondered why the Texas senator – who has accepted at least $176,000 in NRA contributions – was still slated to speak at the convention. After McConnell tweeted how he was “horrified and heartbroken” by the shooting in Uvalde and how the country was praying for those affected, Kalb, the executive producer of Amazon Prime’s “Yearly Departed,” used the Brady data for her one-sentence reply: “$1,267,139 from the NRA.” Hours after the mass shooting in Uvalde, President Joe Biden urged Congress to end the “carnage” of gun violence, pleading with lawmakers to “stand up to the gun lobby” and pass “common-sense” gun laws. Among the others is Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, who expressed how “grief overwhelms the soul” in an attack like the one in Texas, and acknowledged on Twitter that his offer of prayers and condolences were “grossly inadequate” and that answers were needed.
