If the Oilers want to hang onto the ever-increasing contract of Evander Kane, there are few deals they can make this summer to clear space.
Jim is a daily must for readers who want to be “in the know.” I would say trade Zack Kassian, but dump is probably more the suitable term here because a move to get his salary off of the books is going to come in a deal that most fans won’t love. This isn’t to say Edmonton won’t miss No. 44, but a similar physical forward (who might be slightly less skilled) should be available for one-third the price Kassian is. This should be enough to get Kane locked into a deal between $4.5-$6.5 million per season and cover the raises going to Kailer Yamamoto, Jesse Puljujarvi, and Brett Kulak. Once the Oilers move Barrie, they can fill in his spot with a prospect making the jump or — because the Oilers are a little light on right-shot defense prospects — add a veteran who is available for cheap. Coming off a 130-ft goal, not everyone will like this suggestion, but Mike Smith has proven enough this season that running with him and backup Stuart Skinner isn’t the worst plan in the world next season. It could be Seattle, Ottawa, or a host of other teams lower in the standings that would gladly take him if they didn’t have to give up much in a trade. Someone will as his contract isn’t a concern and there will be at least a half-dozen teams willing to take on a $4.5 million cap hit for only two more seasons. The tandem of McDavid and Kane has been nothing short of magical and the gamble (if you can call it that) Ken Holland made to acquire Kane has paid off in spades. It will be unfortunate to see the quarterback of Edmonton’s first-unit power play go, but Evan Bouchard’s progression and his advancement while paired with Duncan Keith have made Tyson Barrie expendable. He’s also been among the best goal scorers in the NHL since late January. That doesn’t mean a deal is out of the realm of possibility. Deservedly so, as he’s been the hottest free agent signing and best NHL Trade Deadline acquisition this season.
Edmonton gave Kane another shot when no other team would, and now he's the hottest scorer in the Stanley Cup playoffs. But there's no vindication here.
But as long as you can, leagues swollen by expansion will always have at least one team willing to look beyond your transgressions. Things ultimately went so badly that the Sharks terminated that contract, and any NHL club will be wary of making the same kind of commitment. Then the other side, obviously, is the background, the character check.” He was twice investigated by league officials for allegedly declining to abide by NHL and U.S.-Canada pandemic regulations, and was suspended 21 games last fall for one of those violations. Holland’s choice has clearly paid off for the Oilers, who don’t need to look much beyond the here and now when it comes to imagining the 30-year-old power forward’s future in hockey. His personal life was fodder for gossip and tabloid entertainment, he had an acknowledged gambling problem and seemed light years removed from the Vancouver lad who arrived in 2009 as the face of a newly diversified league.

It’s a fit here in Edmonton, the way Anderson fit with Messier, or Huddy fit next to Coffey. He is debonair, intelligent and well-spoken, a player for whom the press is happy to wait. Welcome to pro sports, where the number of second chances a player gets arrive in direct proportion to how many goals he scores, or home runs he hits. It was a half-year deal, and we were reeling at the time.” Kane does not appear at the post-game podium in sweats and a ball cap, like most players. “I always go to the Guide and Record Book,” the GM began. Of course, Kane crushed it in San Jose, and Sharks GM Doug Wilson bit, signing Kane to a seven-year, $49-million deal. “There are analytics and all these other things, but you see 30 goals, 30 goals, 30 goals, 30 goals. Kane would produce in San Jose the way he always has, even leading the team in scoring last season. It was just a matter of when, and when I got that opportunity, taking full advantage of it.” But can you name a better mid-season pick-up in the entire league this year than Kane? Then the game ends, and the rest begins.

On January 29, when the Oilers signed him, we said the mistake did not take Kane to a half-season run. He’s a Debonair, smart, well-spoken player, and the press is happy to wait. I asked people in my organization to talk to as many people as possible about Evander. I thought it was easy from a hockey point of view. “I always go to guides and records,” GM started. Kane produced as usual in San Jose and led the team in scoring last season. The shark brought Kane on a contract that expires in 2018. It was a question of when and when I got the opportunity to get the most out of it.” Kane can give coaches 30 goals and 40 headaches in a season. But could you name a better in-season pickup than Kane for the entire league this year? Career spreads evenly across sports pages, police blotters, and gossip columns, and Kane blows up a typical Canadian hockey player, the stereotype, just as Milan Lucic blows up a goalkeeper. Today, he has scored 12 goals in just 11 games with playoff run goals, far ahead of his plans to set a new National Hockey League record. Then the game ends and the rest begins.
With every goal Evander Kane scores in these playoffs, you can hear the ka-ching, ka-ching around the “Let's Go Oilers” — maybe not as deafening as the fan…
I can’t keep them all,” said the dead-honest Holland. I wanted to make sure I was comfortable with all the information I knew or found out (about Kane). The league had investigated him and didn’t do anything (COVID vaccine issue). They weren’t going to suspend him,” said Holland, who wasn’t going to sign Kane if he would then be suspended for off-ice transgressions. That ended up being a power-play goal (empty net) to ice the game.” It is obvious Kane, who only had six goals in 29 playoff games with San Jose before this outbreak, is the farthest thing from a one-trick pony. Congratulations to Evander Kane, who according to the Edmonton Oilers, flew home to be with his girlfriend who just gave birth to a baby boy.
For now, Kane is focused on the birth of his son. The Oilers are likely going to do their best to retain him this offseason, but that won’t come cheap. Kane left the Oilers after the Game 4 win over Calgary to be by her side and it sounds like Iverson Frank Kane was born happy and healthy.

That’s a solid group of players and people. No one had gone through what he has put himself through, been pushed out, been basically kicked out of the NHL, been investigated, and then finds his way back in as the top goal scorer when it matters most. He talked to Tippett. He talked to McDavid. He talked to all his veteran players. Holland didn’t know then he was a few weeks away from firing Tippett. He just knew the team needed something – and that something was a player most teams wouldn’t have touched with a 10-foot-pole or Zdeno Chara’s hockey stick, whichever happened to be longer. It helps when you have elite skill and speed to keep up with two of the best players of this or any generation. – the Oilers signed Kane to a one-year deal on the cheap.
