So I want to do the best I can to help." To be able to stay focused and be able to perform like that under the circumstances showed a lot of character, a lot of resolve," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "I just want to say how proud we are of (Kadri) to go through all that crap the last couple days," Erik Johnson said. The Avalanche organization is “aware of threats made toward Nazem Kadri” following Saturday's game and is working with local law enforcement to investigate.
On-ice officials did not assess a penalty on the play, and the league did not hand out any supplementary discipline Sunday. Binnington suffered an injury on the play that will keep him out the remainder of the series. Kadri and Rosen fell into Binnington, and the three went sprawling into the net.
The NHL has fined St. Louis Blues forward David Perron $5000 for cross-checking Colorado Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri, the league said Tuesday.
Nazem and his family should never be subjected to the comments they have endured this week,” the association wrote. As Kadri attempted to get up, Perron lunged forward, sent another cross-check into Kadri from behind, and proceeded to pile on top of him as the referees attempted to break up the scrum. After Kadri landed a hit on Perron near the Blues bench, Pavel Buchnevich, another St. Louis player, took exception to the exchange and cross-checked Kadri down to the ice. “This is just a small example. Kadri has since said he thinks it was Binnington. "We need more fight in our group.
NHL fines David Perron $5K for cross-checking Nazem Kadri: Kadri netted a Game 4 hat trick as the Avalanche took a 3-1 series lead.
“Kadri and Perron probably should have been two each and we’d be down two minutes with Buchy,” said Blues head coach Craig Berube said. “That’s just stupid penalties that we cashed in on and it hurt them,” Kadri said afterward. David Perron of the St. Louis Blues has been fined $5,000 by the NHL for cross-checking Colorado Avalanche forward Nazem Kadri during Game 4 Monday night. And after that goal, Perron nearly caught Kadri up high with an elbow as he was celebrating: One of the numerous incidents during the game saw Kadri exchange words with Pavel Buchnevich as he was making a line change. Nazem Kadri has flourished in the playoffs so far. And his performance versus the St. Louis Blues has the team on the brink of elimination and unravelling ...
Because, as of now, what they look prepared to find on the other side is an early start to the offseason. That prior version of Kadri was still giving in to the very pitfalls that have nearly ended the Blues' season this time around. And their inability to find an answer for Kadri through Games 1-4 has allowed him to take control of the pace of play whenever he steps on the ice. This time around, the script is flipped. And when that isn't quite enough, Kadri also does his best to give them an advantage, too, having drawn three penalties through the first four games to allow the Avalanche's second-ranked power play, currently humming along at a 33.3 percent efficiency rate, to go to work. Funnily enough, Kadri hasn't really engaged in the typical extracurriculars that fellow get-under-your-skin guys have done to annoy their opponents.
Nazem Kadri's family was the target of racist threats on social media, according to his wife Ashley, who shared some of the messages.
“I tried to do that as best as possible. “As a home team and a home player, you want the fans on your side and heckling the other team, as long as it’s within the guidelines. “I wanted to come out tonight and really put a mark on this game, especially after what happened,” Kadri said. Kadri was hit with an eight-game suspension. Kadri was booed every time he touched the puck in Game 4 at St. Louis, where there was heightened police presence due to the situation. I’ve got no issues with that and I know what was said isn’t a reflection on every single fan in St. Louis. I understand that and I want to make that clear.

So, I want to do the best that I can to help.” Kadri was also a founding member of the Hockey Diversity Alliance, a group of current and former players of colour who are seeking to eradicate racism from the game through systemic change. “I know a lot of people don’t have to deal with that and they might not understand what it feels like, but people are trying (to understand). Which I appreciate. I just worry about some people — and maybe some kids — that aren’t as mentally tough as I am and have to kind of go through that scrutiny and that criticism. During that game, a collision between Kadri and Jordan Binnington left the Blues goaltender injured and unable to play for the rest of Round 2. That should be easy," JT Brown, the former NHL player who is Black, tweeted on Tuesday. "Everyone should be denouncing the racism Nazem Kadri is facing right now.
Nothing Nazem Kadri has ever done as an NHLer warrant treating him like some subhuman monster. These racist attacks on him – and everyone – need to stop.
But this is not a time for “no comment”. This is a time for “comment”, and it shouldn’t be that difficult to keep an arm’s length from Kadri as a player while condemning the blatant xenophobia of the situation. Rather, we have to demonstrate zero tolerance of racism, each and every time the problem manifests before us. It was disappointing to see Blues coach Craig Berube choose the “no comment” route when asked about the abuse of Kadri. We all get that Berube is not responsible for each and every hockey fan out there. The older we get, the more we realize hockey isn’t, in fact, for everyone. If you want to talk about projection, this is a great example. But those of us who are committed to making hockey truly for everyone should be speaking out against this viciousness. But in Kadri’s case, somehow, these terribly uninformed people believe it’s fine to denigrate who they think he is and where they think he’s from. No parents would willingly subject their kids to all this misplaced anger and misunderstanding. The truly incredible, especially-troubling part is that, rather than being the usual steaming load of mental garbage spouted by anonymous internet trolls, this time there were people who were comfortable using their real names as they flouted their bigotry for all to see. No matter how much money he makes, he didn’t start playing hockey knowing this would be a price he had to pay. And we all need to be clear that there is no room in hockey, or civilized society, for that matter, for this hatred to be allowed to flourish. Nazem Kadri is one of those players.

He and his family have been subjected to incredibly racist and disturbing comments online, even prompting extra security at Monday night's game. "Of course, death threats, racial remarks have no place in sports,” Bye said.
Kadri became the first Avalanche player to record a playoff hat trick on the road and helped Colorado take a 3-1 lead in the second-round series.

This is about a flood of messages that didn’t mention bodychecks or collisions in the crease — they mentioned bombings, they mentioned 9/11, they mentioned the same tired slurs heard a hundred times before by everyone who’s navigated life after September 11th with brown skin. This isn’t the setup chapter to the story of how he persevered and won it all. Here, as we watch the fallout of a vile group of hockey fans who, moved to anger, saw brown skin and failed to appreciate Kadri’s humanity enough to treat him like any other NHLer. They just get the questions about why it is they aren’t able to show up, perform, do what’s expected of them. So, raise Kadri up for finding a way to be at his best through all this. I was reminded of them two days later, when Kadri showed up to work again, and performed to the best of his abilities — a hat trick, a four-point night, a victory, a series lead. How it was a terrible thing, of course, but in a way, maybe not so terrible, in what it inspired. She speaks of the ways in which she, as a Muslim woman in the UK, is just that: relatable, recognizable. Take issue with the way Kadri plays the game. Because the next part of these conversations tends to take on a similar sound — how it was overcoming that hatred that allowed him to find greatness, how it was that vile energy that gave him the push he needed to take the next step in his ascent. “It is not the poem I want to write. There’s a poem by the brilliant Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan that speaks of something like these moments.

If you’re a fan of human decency, it’s enough to make you sick that Kadri and his family are still forced to confront such a scourge with insufficient support. And that part of it, if you’re watching as a fan of human decency, is enough to make you sick. But the grim truth of the matter is that racism has been a consistent presence in Kadri’s life from his days growing up as a Muslim in London, Ont. Maybe it’s no wonder that more than a few BIPOC NHL players have long expressed their frustration with the way the league has approached issues of race. Sad that the Kadri trade — which brought aboard the ill-fitting Tyson Barrie along with Alex Kerfoot, who’s been a solid if unspectacular contributor — remains the albatross of the Matthews-Marner era. Call it the ability to rise to an occasion while competing like a demon.
As a result of the collision -- which the NHL did not suspend or fine Kadri for -- Binnington was ruled out for the remainder of the series with a knee injury.
