"It's nice to have the full crowd, and I was lucky to be scheduled on the centre court because of the rain interruptions today. "I have been feeling very well on clay in the last three, four weeks, of course," Djokovic said. Then I cruised through the second and third really when I started going through the ball a bit more." The ball was not bouncing, and it was just difficult to penetrate him. So the first set was very close, but I managed to find the right serves at the right time. "Have to be pleased with the start [to the tournament]," Djokovic assessed.

He can lose and he can self-sabotage. He is not even a narcissist. He can lose the crowd. He is not a jerk. Monday night, he won his sixth straight match without dropping a set. Two weeks ago, Djokovic was without a title in 2022, without match play, without form and without confidence. He was full of gracious quotes, straddling the baseline between confident and cocky. Wearing France’s Lacoste and speaking French, he hugged back. Being cast as such exacted a price—on his mood, and on his tennis. The last time he lost in the first round: 2006. He returned with precision. He turned defense into offense.

Roland-Garros 2022 : pour son entrée en lice, Novak Djokovic ... (Franceinfo)

WIMBLEDON will not have ranking points this year after banning Russian and Belarussian players.

"But I also know some of the people who work at Wimbledon, and I know how difficult a position they were in. I've spoken to some of the Ukrainian players. I have spoken to some of the Russian players. My understanding of the guidance was that Russians and Belarusians can play if they sign a declaration that they're against the war and against the Russian regime. But I think you'll see a lot of top players not playing, you know, just resting and getting ready for the hard-court events, especially those that don't worry too much about the money. British world No 1 Cameron Norrie admits players are "not really playing for anything". Norrie, who also won his opening match at the French Open, added: "You're playing this almost like an exhibition, so for me it was tough to see that.
