The possibility of relocation isn't new, as the Heat's initial five-year lease with the city to use Stockton Arena expired after 2020. During that COVID-altered season, the Heat played in Calgary and shared the Scotiabank Saddledome with the Flames, competing against other Canadian-based AHL teams.

The Stockton Heat, an affiliate team of the Calgary Flames, is heading north starting next season.

After seven seasons with an American Hockey League team in Stockton, California, the Calgary Flames are bringing their farm team a little closer to home.

A wrinkle came in the form of the pandemic, which forced the Flames to have their AHL team co-located in Calgary due to border challenges.
