Gavin Mair, who called long shot winners of three grand slam women's titles, released his 2022 French Open picks for the women's draw.
One of Mair's surprising 2022 French Open picks is that he likes the value of Bianca Andreescu at 20-1. So who wins the French Open 2022? From there, Andreescu has pedigree as the 2019 U.S. Open champion, and she won that event in her first appearance, toppling Serena Williams in the final. He also correctly backed Barbora Krejcikova in the 2021 French Open final. Before making any 2022 French Open picks, be sure to check out the latest tennis predictions from SportsLine's Gavin Mair. The French Open began with two notable defeats: 2020 U.S. Open men’s champion Dominic Thiem was eliminated in his 10th consecutive tour-level loss since returning from a wrist injury. “In practice was really decent already the forehand, but then match situation is something different, Grand Slam especially, I’m obviously a little bit more tight, more nervous and obviously the whole body gets more tight, gets more nervous and right now that’s toxic to my forehand because I’m still missing the fine feeling there.

1,051 -- Nadal has 1,051 wins in his career as of May 22. 13 -- Nadal has won a staggering 13 French Open titles, a record at any single tournament in the Open era. 24 -- At the age of 24, Nadal became the youngest player ever to complete a career Grand Slam. He defeated Djokovic in four sets at the 2010 US Open to capture the achievement. The two could meet next in the French Open quarterfinals. In the 2022 French Open, he will look to move closer to the record of 31 held by both Federer and Djokovic. 15 -- Nadal turned pro at age 15 in 2001. 2 -- Nadal has also won two Olympic gold medals: in singles in 2008 and in doubles in 2016. They have met in nine Grand Slam finals, with Nadal winning on six occasions. Oddly enough, they have never played against one another at the US Open, in any round. The event, which takes place in November, features the world's best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams and is set up in a round-robin format. 11 -- Being partners on the court with Nadal pays off. 3 -- Well, the Big Three. More specifically: Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have dominated men's tennis for a generation.

And after just a few weeks of preparation and a single tournament, Nadal won the Australian Open in January, showing the world once more that counting him out is a terrible idea. Also, he said that the results from the last two months mattered more than titles won a long time ago. “Things can change quick,” Nadal said, though neither he nor anyone else can say with any certainty that they will. “It’s something that we haven’t seen for sure in a long time.” Mueller-Weiss Syndrome, the degenerative foot condition that Nadal has had since childhood, prevented him from playing for most of the rest of the year. It has been a long time since Nadal showed up in Paris and this tournament was not his to lose. Nadal is 105-3 at Roland Garros. He has won 13 singles titles, the first coming half a lifetime ago, in 2005. He embarrassed Djokovic, 6-0, 6-2, 7-5, in the final. Nine months later, though, Djokovic got revenge, breaking Nadal’s spirit and his body during an epic four-set semifinal on his way to the championship. He is the only player in the field with a 9-foot silver statue on these grounds. His knees are often on the edge of balky. Which version of the 13-time champion of this tournament will show up?

“The key is just to continue being patient, work on the stuff which is not working and then it will come back, but it will take time,” he said. At times he snapped forehands well long early in the point and other times he set up short balls only to miss the easiest shot of the rally. As he fell meekly to Dellien, the 87th-ranked Bolivian clay courter put an arm around Thiem and gave him some supportive words at the net. Since returning from a nine-month injury layoff due to a right wrist injury and various complications, Thiem has now lost all of his seven matches back, winning just two sets between them. Just two hours into the tournament on Sunday afternoon, Thiem suffered a disappointing and at times hard to watch first-round defeat to Hugo Dellien of Bolivia, who easily beat him 6-3, 6-2, 6-4. There was once a time, not very long ago at all, when Dominic Thiem was better placed than anyone else to emerge as the next new champion on these grounds.

The 2022 French Open men's singles draw and results. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz are the Roland Garros favorites.
He would be the first teenage man to win a major since Nadal’s first conquest in Paris in 2005. Then there’s Alcaraz, who is the same age as Nadal was when Nadal won his first French Open. Alcaraz won his last two tournaments, including beating Nadal and Djokovic on back-to-back days on May 6-7. The 35-year-old Spaniard is bidding to break 1972 French Open champion Andres Gimeno‘s record as the oldest singles champion in Paris. But he most overcome persistent foot pain that impacted his lead-up, which for the first time since 2015 included no titles in the early spring clay-court season.

It was an anticlimactic conclusion to the affair. I’m very happy to have lived such a match.” It was a great experience,” Fernandez insisted. But Mladenovic, palpably invigorated by the noisily supportive crowd, bucked back with vigour, leaping out to a 3-0 lead in the second set. But I don’t think also at any point I lost belief because I know how I can play, I know what my level is, and I knew that if I hung in there and if I tried to find a way to change things around, I would get my opportunity.” She held at 5-4 and then, with her forehand, swept the last four points. At 5-3, the 29-year-old held two set points, which was when she faltered. A feisty baseliner, Varillas had Auger-Aliassime — widely considered the best mover on tour — scrambling hither and yon in dominating the first two sets. Compatriot Fernandez didn’t exactly charge into the second round, but she did take charge ultimately to eliminate Kristina Mladenovic, a former top-10 player currently ranked No. 107: 6-0, 7-5. Teenager Fernandez, meanwhile, saw a bagel bushwhack of her opponent — a Frenchwoman, so the crowd was naturally loudly rooting for an upset — nearly go pear-shaped before sidestepping a double-break hole to prevail in straight sets. But the 26-year-old, world No. 122, clearly tired as the match ground on with Auger-Aliassime finding his signature strokes, winning 26 of 28 first-serve points and not facing a single break point through sets three and four. But once I did, then little by little, to get that first break and to start feeling more comfortable as the match went on, then things got better for me.”

“I said already many times I was sad that this decision was taken by Wimbledon and that I was not allowed to compete,” said Khachanov, a 2021 Wimbledon quarterfinalist. I’d rather try to take it week by week and not really think about if Wimbledon will be less appealing.” And at the end of the day, I just take it as whatever our governing bodies decide. “I love the grass, so I think despite the situation, I’m still thinking of doing it,” said the 18th-seeded Dimitrov, who advanced in straight sets. You have to stand behind your principles and what the tour stands for.” In a sharp rebuke to what they viewed as discrimination, the men’s and women’s pro tours announced Friday that they would withhold ranking points from all Wimbledon competitors this year.
Félix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez were both winners on day one of the French Open, but Rebecca Marino was defeated.
Now with a set in her pocket, Gauff put the pedal to the metal. The first set was a roller coaster, starting out with Marino breaking serve in the opening game only for Gauff to break right back. However, the Canadian broke in the fourth game to keep the deficit at just one break. However, it did not last as Gauff struck once more, drawing an error to break for the opening set. He created his first break point of the match at 2-1 and converted to take his first lead of the day. There was none of the traditional Fernandez drama early in her clash with Mladenovic, as the former Roland-Garros junior champion exploded out of the gate, racing through the opening set in just 29 minutes. Unlike the previous two sets, the decisive break came late in the set. Auger-Aliassime finished the match with 14 aces and won 83 percent of his first serve points. Auger-Aliassime was now able to move in on return and play his way into the Peruvian’s games. The first two sets were dominated by Varillas, who was cruising on serve, not facing a break point and only losing 11 total points in his own service games. It did not take long in the third set for Auger-Aliassime to start turning the match around. He broke again to send the match to a decider.
Former top-ranked women's tennis star Naomi Osaka is out of the French Open, after losing in the first round to Amanda Anisimova, 7-5, 6-4.
She has also won a tour-leading 14 sets at 6-0 this season. Her winning streak is the longest by any woman since Serena Williams won 34 in a row in 2013. Anisimova is a 20-year-old American who reached the French Open semifinals in 2019.

So I think the intention was really good, but the execution is kind of all over the place."
Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka's return to French Open ends in first-round defeat amid rash of unforced errors and eight double-faults.
Osaka, 24, has not advanced beyond the third round at the French Open, the only major contested on clay. A tight second set turned on the same glitch — an Osaka double fault, at 3-3 — and Anisimova went on to serve out the match on a backhand down-the-line winner. “It was a very tough match.”
Four-time grand slam champion Naomi Osaka exited the French Open in the first round on Monday as she lost 7-5 6-4 against Amanda Anisimova.
"It was a very tough match. The defeat to Anisimova means Osaka ends her clay-court swing having played just three games: she lost in the second round of the Madrid Open and had to withdraw from the Italian Open due to an ankle injury. Anisimova seized the advantage when she broke Osaka at 5-5 and went on to take the first set in 48 minutes, while in the second, she broke at 3-3 and twice held serve to wrap up the win.
Barbora Krejcikova on Monday lost to 97th-ranked Diane Parry 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, becoming only the third defending women's champion to lose in the first round of ...
Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion who reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2013. Krejcikova's mistakes mounted: By the end, she had accumulated 45 unforced errors, 19 in the third set alone. "You can get a bit tight, which happened in the first set. Kvitova won the Wimbledon title twice and reached the semifinals at the French Open twice, the last time two years ago. Against Parry, Krejcikova double-faulted on the match's very first point, then looked every bit someone ready to display her best tennis. She has won the title at her past five tournaments.
Amanda Anisimova knocked her out of a second straight Grand Slam event.
But Anisimova, tall and with a taste for risk, has had a lot more success at Roland Garros so far than Osaka. As a 17-year-old, Anisimova reached the semifinals in 2019 before losing to eventual champion Ashleigh Barty. All four of Osaka’s Grand Slam singles titles were won on hardcourts: two at the Australian Open and two at the United States Open. She has never reached even the final of a clay-court event on tour and has never been past the third round of the French Open. Her career record in singles on hardcourts is 133-56 but on clay it is 21-17 and on grass just 11-9. But she has not been a dominant force on tour for well over a year now and has never been a dominant force on the French Open’s clay-court surface. Faced with a lack of background, they fined her $15,000 for missing her first-round news conference and made it clear that she risked being defaulted from the tournament and future Grand Slam tournaments if she continued to refuse to comply with the media requirements. Osaka arrived unseeded and having played just two singles matches on clay all year after withdrawing from the Italian Open earlier this month because of her left Achilles’ tendon injury. The French Open has changed some of its leadership, with longtime tournament director Guy Forget being replaced this year by Amélie Mauresmo, a former No. 1 player on the women’s tour who has made players’ mental health a priority. Last year, struggling on and off court, she withdrew before the second round of the French Open because of a standoff with tournament officials over her refusal to appear at mandatory post-match news conferences. She said afterward that she was leaning toward not playing next month at Wimbledon, which is played on grass courts, now that the WTA Tour had stripped the event of ranking points in response to Wimbledon’s ban on Russian and Belarusian players. She withdrew from preliminary events on clay but played at Roland Garros with her elbow taped and started convincingly against Parry on the main Philippe Chatrier Court before Parry lifted her game. Barbora Krejcikova, the reigning French Open champion and No. 2 seed, was also beaten on Monday, upset in the first round by Diane Parry, a 19-year-old French player, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. She added: “Going into the match I did feel the stress and the nerves a bit, because it’s a very tough first round. So it is a bit disappointing, but I’m happy with how my attitude was, because the last match that we played in Australia I think I was getting a bit more upset with myself.”

I was trying not to think about it too much, but going into the match, I did feel like the stress and the nerves a bit, because it is a very tough first round,” Anisimova said. “Just happy with how I was able to manage it and get through it.” Osaka was unable to summon the serving or court coverage on which her game is based, in part because her practice time and recent match play have been limited. And even if the occasional rain that delayed play for hours Monday made the tennis balls heavier and restricted what Anisimova felt she could do to deliver shots where she wanted them, she was good enough to advance in straight sets against a top-flight opponent. “I mean, I feel like there is always more to do. She tried to stretch the tendon by tugging on her neon yellow shoes at changeovers or by squatting to flex her lower leg between points.

“For the most part I think I’m OK,” Osaka said last week after deciding to do a pre-tournament press conference. But I think everyone has been really positive, for the most part.” Osaka withdrew from the 2021 French Open before her second-round match. Also Monday, the women’s bottom half of the draw was blown open. “I didn’t even make my decision yet, but I’m leaning more towards not playing given the current circumstances, but, you know, that might change,” Osaka said in an English answer to a question in Japanese that media on site reported to be about Wimbledon. “I’m not sure why, but I feel like if I play Wimbledon without points, it’s more like an exhibition. The tournament starts June 27.
A year after leaving the French Open to avoid being fined for not speaking to reporters while battling anxiety, Naomi Osaka lost to Amanda Anisimova.
Azarenka is a two-time Australian Open champion who reached the semifinals at Roland Garros in 2013.
