Any severe thunderstorms can cause damage, and in this case, they were deadly.” “The ingredients for thunderstorms were there,” said Cheng. “The week prior to the storm was a hot one, and there was some heat and humidity in southern Ontario on Saturday.” “We’re in a transitional season, and sometimes we get these hotter and more humid air masses, which are the two necessary ingredients for thunderstorm development,” said Cheng. “The wind gusts were what prompted us to ensure that the severe thunderstorm warnings were appropriately broadcast,” said Cheng. “At the Kitchener-Waterloo airport winds reached 132 km/h.” (The threshold for sending out a thunderstorm-related alert is recorded wind gusts at 130 km/h.) Thunderstorms and derechos “can be related — and there could be embedded tornadoes in a thunderstorm,” said Cheng. “But it’s important to note that straight line waves can be just as damaging and deadly.” The derecho was unsurprising to experts in the province: there were meteorological signs which pointed to a major weather event.

But because of warning, because of the system and because Canadians are well educated about the weather, we don’t take it lightly. “We’re seeing a lot more destruction by weather but really, in spite of what we saw yesterday, there are fewer people dying from the weather and it’s maybe even more tumultuous than it used to be. “It has winds that can be as powerful as a hurricane.

What is a 'derecho'? Climatologist explains Saturday's powerful storm (CTV Edmonton)

The storm that moved across Ontario and Quebec Saturday is known as a 'derecho', a powerful kind of windstorm that is long lasting and far-reaching.

3 hr ago 3 hr ago 3 hr ago 3 hr ago 3 hr ago 3 hr ago 3 hr ago 3 hr ago In the springtime, this is why you can get some violent weather,” Phillips said. “There could be tornadoes embedded in that kind of derecho. Phillips said a derecho often has tornado-like or even hurricane-force winds. “This storm was almost about 1,000 kilometres from Michigan to Maine as it went across Ontario and Quebec. That’s what a derecho is, it’s a long line of very active thunderstorms or microburst kind of situations.

According to the Storm Prediction Center website, “The corridors of maximum derecho frequency likely would shift poleward with time” as warm domes of high pressure expand north under global warming. Several of the deaths underscore a common theme in severe wind events: Those participating in outdoor activities are particularly vulnerable to violent wind gusts. The combination of this heat with moisture pulled north from the Gulf of Mexico encouraged extreme atmospheric instability, or fuel for thunderstorms, in eastern Canada. The storms erupted as this hot, moist air was met by a strong cold front marching eastward. Derechos often strike along the northern periphery of heat domes, where conditions are ripe for powerful thunderstorms. Derechos are fairly common in the Lower 48 states but are more rare north of the border and seldom affect such densely populated corridors. Several of the fatalities were caused by falling trees, including at a golf course and a conservation area.
