Dan Fogelman explains why the major loss happened on the penultimate episode of 'This Is Us.'

But I also feel buoyed by the fact that we’re able to represent this situation that millions of people find themselves and their families in and for people to feel a sense of community and not feel like an anomaly and hopefully feel a little less alone,” she says. I love that our show continues to humanize and show this is still the same woman and she deserves to be celebrated and loved in the same way, even if maybe she’s not seemingly the same mother you have known your whole life.” You’re able to see this isn’t just an 80-something woman who is finding herself in decline with Alzheimer’s. This is a woman who was a mother — a young mother and a young wife and a mother to teenagers and a mother to adults. And I always wanted and always had planned for the final episode of the series to revolve around the epilogue of the continuing story of the family rather than the moment,” the showrunner says. As it happens, the doctor who was tending to Jack thought he was OK and went upstairs to help young Marcus, who needed saving. “To me, the show has been about many things and a lot of people can lock on to different elements of the show.

This Is Us Killed Off a Major Character in the Penultimate Episode (E! Online)

The May 17 episode of This Is Us might have just ended, but it's going to stick with us for a long time. Find out which major character died and how the ...

It just so happened to be the same night that Jack died due to smoke inhalation after setting the Pearson house on fire. The episode also introduced us to the Brooks family, with patriarch Dulé Hill. In a flashback car crash, his son Marcus was critically injured. "I want to say the perfect thing to you, Mom. But I'm not sure what that is," he said. When it came time for sons Randall ( Sterling K. Brown) and Kevin ( Justin Hartley) to say their goodbyes, the two swapped stories about their mother. I love you, Mom. I love you so much." That's when Kate ( Chrissy Metz), who had been hustling to get back from a trip in time to say goodbye, made it to her mother's bedside.

This Is Us Recap: Farewell, Rebecca (TVLine)

'This Is Us': Rebecca dies in Season 6, Episode 17, 'The Train.' Read a recap.

And via flashbacks, we see that Marcus and his family were at the hospital the same night as the Pearsons’ house fire, and that Marcus’ father had a conversation with Jack while both were grabbing some coffee in the waiting room! Then Toby, who of COURSE can’t do it without getting in a joke (“Rebecca, you can tell me: You love me more than Philip, right?”) Annie goes in, too, and thanks her grandmother for telling her that it was OK to be small, as long as she knew she could be as big as she wanted to be. He asks if she wants a limoncello, “or is that too on the nose?” She smiles, nodding at the bowl of citrus fruit on the bar, and says, “Hey, if life gives you lemons.” But he winds up making her a vesper, the fancy drink her father always said he’d have if he took her on a trip like this. As she cries, she asks them to tell Rebecca that she loves her, and she’s on her way. Both Randall and Kev assure her that Rebecca wouldn’t have wanted her to skip the trip. (Side note: Very creative way to get so much of the cast in this episode, This Is Us!) But as pleased as Rebecca is with the tableau, something’s still not right: “Kate’s not here.” But then William reminds her that the train is moving fast, and they have to keep going, so they move into the bar car… “You’re going to be a grandfather.” She starts to list her worries — she and the baby’s father aren’t married yet, he works all the time, she just started her residency — but the joy in Randall’s eyes can’t be dimmed. Déja sees her dad sitting alone in the living room and decides to give him some good news, provided he can be “totally cool” and keep it to himself for now. She asks him to sit, and to remind her of the poem that gave her the idea for Randall’s name. Philip, Hailey and Jack arrive, but without Kate; Philip tells everyone that his wife was able to get a seat on a plane home from London, and she’s scheduled to be there in the morning. When a man approaches, she says “I’m waiting for someone” without tearing her gaze from the window…

'This Is Us' Creator Dan Fogelman Breaks Down Emotional ... (Deadline)

SPOILER ALERT: The story includes details about the May 17 episode of This Is Us, "The Train." It was played Monday night at the Landmark Theater as part of ...

“While it will make you cry, it will make you sad, the end of the finale moves me in a way that is different. The show intentionally resolved all major mysteries ahead of time “so people can sit with the family in the final episode in the simplest of way,” Fogelman said. In the first part of his video interview (you can watch it above), Fogelman speaks about filming that final scene, which required a reshoot, as well as the entire emotional episode. He was honored for his contributions to finding cure for Alzheimer’s, with the man who handed him the award played by The Is Us director/EP Ken Olin, who helmed “The Train”. The dad Kenny, played by Dulé Hill, lost control of the family car and one of the sons, Marcus, was taken to the hospital in critical condition. She was guided through the cars by William and spent time with the train’s bartender, who was none other than Dr. K who was making literal lemonade out of lemons.

I was just daunted by the prospect of making sure that we captured it properly and that it was accurate. And the first take, I was like, "Oh no, no, no, no, I can't do this." And it was sort of haunting, because they shot me walking through in the background, with his belongings, walking to the car. How much did you and Dan talk about the need to balance the sadness with the sweet in this final run of episodes? And I wanted to make sure that we handled it respectfully and with dignity. I wrote Dan [Fogelman] immediately after finishing it and was just like, "I'm so honored that I get to be a part of this and to tell this story, and to end this story in this manner just is wow." It was a lot of fun to play back in this era, and to get to work with everybody in a way. My first day on the pilot was working with him and to footnote it together again, to bring him back in at the end was just beyond my wildest imagination. And then to tell her that she did an amazing job and she was an amazing mother — it was everything you could have hoped for. It is the most beautiful metaphor, and my goodness, if this is what really happens to us at the end — it doesn't seem all that bad, you know? Because we got to live in a world where Rebecca was at her most cognizant, I feel like she was at a chapter of her life where she maybe felt like she was firing on all cylinders. I don't know what all is going to be seen [on TV] — just the little bits and bobs from our life, the "Taboo" game was there, the growth chart from the kitchen in the Pearson house, there were just so many fun things for me to look at and be caught off guard by and really reacting to in the moment.

13 Heart-wrenching 'This Is Us' Episodes to Watch Before the Series ... (Collider.com)

Rebecca and Jack are expecting triplets when Rebecca goes into labor on Jack's birthday. Kevin and Kate are twins reevaluating their lives as they turn 36. And ...

By the end of the episode and a particularly brutal needle drop, the audience and Kevin have both reevaluated a man we tended to overlook, mourning the loss of his quiet dedication. It was a sensitive and even-handed denouement for a couple we’d watched from the beginning and a charming introduction to the new love of Kate’s life, while also assuring us that both halves of Katoby would go on to live happier lives apart. The story of Kate and Toby’s ultimately irreconcilable differences moved forward chronologically, while Kate’s new courtship and engagement to Phillip (Chris Geere) moved backwards, until both met up first at the day the divorce papers were signed. The day of Kevin’s wedding to Madison (Caitlin Thompson), Kate’s best friend and the mother of Kevin’s twins, we get multiple moments of catharsis. This episode gives us two excellent Big Three-centric storylines: the young Big Three begrudgingly obliging Jack in making a time capsule to open when they’re 18 (which we know Jack won’t live to see) and the grown Big Three meeting after a very difficult week for each of them. There were still more mysteries about this time period to solve — Where are Kate and Miguel (Jon Huertas)? Why is Toby (Chris Sullivan) reluctant to come? This time, it’s Deja (Lyric Ross), Randall and Beth’s foster (and eventually adopted) daughter. Using a spin on the you-think-it’s-now-but-it’s-not trick from the pilot, the episode reveals that the unnamed social worker is in fact Tess (Iantha Richardson), Randall’s daughter, now all grown up and meeting a graying Randall for their weekly dinner. Another character-specific episode, this one focuses on fan-favorite Beth. We learn about her lifelong passion for dance and her own tragic loss of a father, both of which she's kept quiet as the other Pearsons deal with their big dreams and big grief. This episode was the first entry in the first “Big Three Trilogy” — seasonal sets of three episodes that focus on each sibling in turn. It’s an elegiac tribute to a complicated and beloved man and the son he too-recently found, and one of the show’s most successful forays into the backstory of a supporting character. The pilot managed to pull off two major feats: introducing us to all five of the major characters in three distinct plotlines and also serving up a major time-based twist.

'This Is Us': Rebecca Catches One Final Ride on 'The Train' (RECAP) (TV Insider)

Spoiler Alert. Ron Batzdorff/NBC. [Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for Season 6, Episode 17 of This Is Us, “The Train.

Looking at a bowl of lemons on the counter, Dr. K offers to make her a limoncello, but Rebecca requests a vesper, a cocktail her dad used to enjoy. We’ll never know, but it goes to show, that you can never see the full picture until you take a step back. When she asks about the poem that she used as inspiration for Randall’s name, Rebecca asks William to recite it. Taking a moment to breathe, Marcus’ father (played by Dulé Hill) goes to find coffee where he bumps into a sooty Jack. They get to talking and Jack brings up how his house burned down earlier that night, he then asks the man how he’s doing. As they walk down the cars, Rebecca passes a younger version of herself sitting opposite of her father like the occasions when they rode trains together in her youth. He also jokes that she loved him more than Philip. Out in the living room, Deja texts her boyfriend to tell him that she’s pregnant, sharing the news that up until now she’d been withholding. Much of the episode is split into two realities, the one that the Pearson family is experiencing and the other that Rebecca is experiencing as she nears death. He tells her he’s loved her since they were sixteen and shares that he’s thrilled she’s pregnant and he looks forward to getting married. In retaliation for Beth not sharing what she said to Rebecca, Randall teases that he has a secret, but he’s a little premature in gloating. Meanwhile, out in the living area, Kevin and Randall chat with Kate over FaceTime and she regrets having taken a trip abroad for work, but her brothers reassure that their mother wouldn’t want it any other way. She tells her dad that there are no rules, and takes the opportunity to tell him that she’s pregnant forcing him to keep his reactions contained. Randall wrestles with what he wants to say, hoping he can let her know that it’s okay to leave, but doing so in a way that won’t scare Rebecca.

Only One Episode Left of This Is Us! What We Can Expect In the Emotional Finale According to the Latest Promo. May 18, 2022 – 4:44 PM – 0 Comments.

“I think the simplicity of what’s in store for people in parts of this episode are what the whole series is really about,” Moore told EW. “People waiting for things to be tied up perfectly in a bow with every single character and every single story need to abandon that idea because that’s not the reality of life anyway. In the first, we listened to the Pearsons share their memories of Rebecca, and got to see a few of their goodbyes, including Beth confiding in her mother-in-law that she has always been her parenting role model. Where these three are going and the tools that they have to help them navigate throughout all for the trials and tribulations that might come their way.” In a lot of ways, the penultimate episode of This Is Us felt like it served as a sort of series finale, with Pearson matriarch Rebecca taking her last breaths at the end of a full and meaningful life. Speaking to People, creator Dan Fogelman said, “I feel we’ve answered [the big] questions now, and we can live in the simple experience of being a family with this family. “If you step back,” William says in his moving final speech to Rebecca from the penultimate episode, “you’ll see that the end is not sad. “I’m not worried about forgetting about the big stuff,” an older but still lucid Rebecca says, as the promo cuts to brief clips of her spending time with her children throughout the years. It opens with an idyllic scene of Jack ( Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca ( Mandy Moore) pushing the elementary-aged Big Three on a swing set, before cutting to the couple having a heart to heart while lying in bed. We then see a shot of the house fire and the Big Three sharing a park bench in Season 2, while Kevin was in rehab. “You have changed the way I think about love,” Jack tells Rebecca as we flash back to their wedding day. Here’s what we have to look forward to in the This Is Us series finale. The extended promo for “Us” plays its cards close to the vest, consisting mostly of callbacks to previous episodes of the series, although we do get a few glimpses of what to expect in the final episode.

This Week in TV: 'This Is Us' Series Finale, 'Angelyne' (Hollywood Reporter)

The next seven days also bring the premieres of Angelyne on Peacock and a few Fox summer shows, as well as a documentary about comedy icon George Carlin on HBO.

Peacock’s limited series about her — based on a THR feature — delves into the story behind the persona. There are also a host of season finales on the broadcast nets. On Monday, the network will debut a new version of musical game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics and season five of Beat Shazam. New:George Carlin’s American Dream makes the case that the legendary comedian would still be a vital voice if he were alive today, even while it shows that a lot of his material is still extremely relevant. Also: HBO Max’s Legendary begins its third season Thursday. Netflix’s The G Word With Adam Conover (Thursday) is produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground and delves into the unsung work done by federal employees. This Is Us has been a sustained hit for NBC over its six seasons, and it’s going out the way it came in, as one of network TV’s higher-rated dramas. “I found, and find, her fascinating,” Rossum told THR. The limited series premieres Thursday on Peacock. It would be next to impossible to watch everything, but let THR point the way to worthy options for the coming week. Some two dozen broadcast shows end their seasons in the coming week — one of which, NBC’s This Is Us, will have its series finale after six tear-jerking seasons. Below is The Hollywood Reporter‘s rundown of premieres, returns and specials for May 18-24. In order of airdate, they are: ABC’s full Wednesday lineup of The Goldbergs (8 p.m.), The Wonder Years (8:30 p.m.), The Conners (9 p.m.), Home Economics (9:30 p.m.) and A Million Little Things (10 p.m.); Beyond the Edge (9 p.m. Wednesday, CBS); Station 19 (8 p.m. Thursday, ABC); Young Sheldon (8 p.m. Thursday, CBS); all three Law & Orders (starting at 8 p.m. Thursday, NBC); United States of Al (8:30 p.m. Thursday, CBS); Big Sky (10 p.m. Thursday, ABC); NCIS: Los Angeles and SWAT (9 and 10 p.m. Sunday, CBS); CBS’ Monday lineup of The Neighborhood (8 p.m.), Bob Hearts Abishola (8:30 p.m.), NCIS (9 p.m.) and NCIS: Hawai’i (10 p.m.); Young Rock (8 p.m. Tuesday, NBC); CBS’ three FBI shows (starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday); and New Amsterdam (10 p.m. Tuesday, NBC). 'This Is Us' only continues to gain traction ahead of its series finale and the latest episode on Tuesday was no exception.
