The Edmonton Oilers take on the Calgary Flames in Game One of the Battle of Alberta second round series in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Kane played 18:02 minutes and Nugent-Hopkins 18:58 against L.A., and is expected to be the second-line centre against Calgary. But there’s something wrong. Neither were Nugent-Hopkins and Kane, which is a large gulp when McDavid and Zach Hyman are skating but three of the Oilers top-five forwards are not. And with an agitator like Matthew Tkachuk setting fires, the Flames can be real menace when they want to be. Man-for-man, skill-for-skill, the two teams match up pretty evenly. Edmonton fans to the right. Five minutes later, Brett Ritchie made it 3-0 on an unassisted goal that saw Oilers goaltender Mike Smith chased from the net in place of backup Mikko Koskinen. Calgary got two goals from Brett Coleman to give the Flames a commanding 5-1 lead early. But the Flames took the lead back shortly after as Rasmus Andersson made it 7-6 and the Flames didn’t look back. Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk scored a hat-trick on an empty net goal to seal the deal for the hometown squad. Draisaitl made it a one-goal game with 39 seconds left in the second when he beat Markstrom far side on an odd-man rush with McDavid. Game 2 is Friday at the Saddledome before the series heads to Edmonton for Sunday’s Game 3 and Tuesday’s Game 4. Zach Hyman scored twice for Edmonton, and Connor McDavid had a goal and three assists for his fourth straight multi-point game in the playoffs. “Couldn’t ask for a better start, but you’ve got to have that killer mindset and you’ve got to be able to put teams down and keep pushing them down,” Coleman said. The Oilers did not go quietly, however. “Clearly we weren’t ready and it’s tough to play catch up for the whole night. Jacob Markstrom stopped 22 shots for the win.

Now he needs the rest of the team to follow. “It’s Game 1 of a seven-game series. “We got to 6-6, then turned over some pucks and it ended up in the back of our net." Edmonton was a lethal 43.8 per cent against Calgary on the PP during the club's four regular season meetings. “We’re capable of it. In end they made us pay.”
Tonight is game one in second round of the NHL Playoffs. Here are three keys for the Edmonton Oilers to win this crucial first game.
Giving your team a chance to win is what you need to provide your team in the playoffs. That is limited to just early in the game as well. The Calgary Flames are a significantly better team than the Kings. If the Edmonton Oilers struggle at the start of the game they will not be able to stay in the game. He played good in the Kings series aside from the mistake he made in game one. If the Oilers give up a chance early Mike Smith will need to come up with a big save. In the Los Angeles Kings series the Edmonton Oilers had slow starts in 5 of the 7 games.
« On a marqué six buts.
Matthew Tkachuk scored a hat trick for the Calgary Flames in Wednesday's 9-6 win over the visiting Edmonton Oilers to open their playoff series.
"That's just not the recipe for success. Blake Coleman scored a pair of goals for the Flames, who led 5-1 early in the second period. "Clearly we weren't ready and it's tough to play catch up for the whole night. "That's not our style of game, 9-6. Not good at all," Tkachuk said. Wednesday's Game 1 was, by contrast, a back-and-forth track meet with erratic goaltending. "Not good. "Probably our worst game of the playoffs so far. "Strange game," Flames head coach Darryl Sutter said. Move on." "We scored on our first two shots and there were probably six different games out there. A total of 15 goals made it the highest-scoring playoff game involving the Flames and Oilers. It surpassed the dozen the two teams scored in Game 3 of the 1983 Smythe Division final.

We can all be a lot better away from the puck, and that starts with myself.” Goals would come easy on Smith, who simply was not ready to play in this game, allowing three goals on 10 shots before giving way to Mikko Koskinen. From there, the sheer volume of Grade-A opportunities left Koskinen without a chance to make a difference. You have to have a better start.” Thanks to some horrendous goaltending in Calgary’s crease, the Oilers crawled back from a 6-2 deficit to tie the game at 6-6. In the end, they made us pay.” Who isn’t going to tune in for Game 2 on Friday night, right?

Just 25 seconds later Andrew Mangiapane put another past Smith and Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft opted to use his only timeout before the one-minute mark, but kept Smith in net. Smith played each game in Round 1 and entered Game 1 against the Flames with a .938 save percentage. The game was barely six minutes old, and the Calgary Flames had already lit the lamp three times in front of a raucous Saddledome — prompting the Edmonton Oilers to pull Mike Smith for Mikko Koskinen to kick off the Battle of Alberta.

Oilers let Calgary score nine in consecutive games in losing effort.
He should have still been in the box as he was a part of a pair of coincidental along with Kane and not the initial call on the play. Although Smith was particularly terrible to start and gave the Oilers a massive disadvantage in this one. McDavid gave the Oilers a chance to get back even by drawing a hold. Evan Bouchard was able to get one back on a beautiful feed from McDavid. Oilers cut the lead to 5-2 midway through the second. Edmonton was an absolute tire-fire in their own end allowing the Flames to steamroll them on a consistent basis. The Oilers pulling off an incredible comeback effort after this one looked like a slam dunk for the Flames. Not even a minute in and the Oilers found themselves in a 2-0 hole. Backlund went to the box for cross-checking, giving Edmonton a chance to make it 3-2 with lots of hockey left. The Flames get the first lead of the series in what was a very weird game. The rough stuff started to pick up in the late stages. The Flames peppered Koskinen on the chance but couldn’t beat him as the Finn was giving Edmonton some goaltending for a change. The goal parade continued...but this time for the Oilers! After some extended time in the Calgary end, Connor McDavid walked in front of the net and went five-hole.
And everybody loved it. Minus the goaltenders. The Calgary Flames beat the Edmonton Oilers 9-6 after giving up a 3-0 lead. Goaltending? Not a thing. Defense?
As the series goes on, expect the nastiness to hit a playoff-high. Absolutely. But they don't have the history that the Battle of Alberta has. High-scoring games are mostly a thing of the past, but we saw a ton of it on Wednesday night. Don't expect a lot of 15-goal games -- Calgary scored 15 goals in the opening round against Dallas -- but we should get more memorable moments between two teams that truly hate each other. Hilarious. And then Tkachuk got out of the box and scored to rub it in even more. Did you see those five minutes of Evander Kane and Matthew Tkachuk screaming at each other in the box?
The Calgary Flames staved off an Edmonton Oilers comeback attempt for a 9-6 win in Game 1 of their best-of-seven series.
“Obviously you’re not going to win any games if you get scored on nine times, there’s no secret to that,” Draisaitl said. “That’s just not the recipe for success. Zach Hyman fooled Markstrom from a sharp angle as the teams combined for nine goals before the game was 30 minutes old. “So, there’s a lot of things for us to clean up and well go through the tape and give our team some.” Elias Lindholm beat Mike Smith with a long wrist shot, then Andrew Mangiapane put a shot from close range in off the post. He added an empty netter to complete the hat trick.
The Edmonton Oilers got crushed by the Calgary Flames last night down in Calgary. The Flames now lead the series 1-0 after the 9-6 win.
I expect the Oilers to come out with a better start next game (not like it will be hard) and put up a fight. The Edmonton Oilers need to have a short term memory as the next game is tomorrow. Both coaches are going to have talks with their teams and the next game will be a lot tighter of a checking game. The Edmonton Oilers were lucky to be in this game. I think the Edmonton Oilers missed a chance to win a game when Markstrom plays a bad game. If the Oilers would have been able to score one goal they could have swung momentum in their favor.
A product of the Oilers chasing the game, Darnell Nurse and Cody Ceci were out for just one goal for and five goals against. Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid ...
Markstrom was also nowhere near as sharp as we’ve seen him in the past seven games, and nowhere near how sharp the Flames needed him to be. They were leaky defensively, though, and in their own zone their puck luck resembled what they got for stretches in the Dallas series: their mistakes away from the puck resulted in Oilers goals. But the Flames were able to out-score their challenges, at least in Game 1. Well, that wasn’t an issue in Game 1 of their series with the Edmonton Oilers. They were on the ice for the Flames’ second goal of the game which came 51 seconds into the first, and the Flames’ fifth goal of the game which came 45 seconds into the second. This is one of the many areas the Oilers need to improve on come Friday night in a building they’ve won hockey games in before. They went back to work, took a look at what went wrong, and outscored the Kings 14-2 in games two and three. Quite frankly, it’s some clown stuff from Lucic at a point in the game where it’s not needed. After all, they did outscore the Flames 5-1 between Bouchard’s goal, and Kailer Yamamoto’s 6-6 goal in the third. He finished with a goal and three assists and was the most active Oiler in the physicality department leading all Edmonton skaters with five hits. Mike Smith set the tempo of the game by allowing two goals on his first three shots, and the third on the Flames’ fifth shot. “We gave up a goal at the start of the second period as well.
The 15 combined goals were the highest in a Stanley Cup Playoffs game since Calgary and the Los Angeles Kings combined for the same amount in a 9-6 Kings win in ...
"But in the end, as I said, we scored six times. "Just a couple of mistakes, collectively, individually, that ended up right on their tape and back of our net," Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl said. "We didn't really get any momentum going on our PP," said Draisaitl, who had a goal and two assists. "To a man, not one of us was anywhere near where we needed to be to start the game," Woodcroft said. Goalie Mike Smith was pulled after allowing three goals on 10 shots in the first 6:05. They trailed 3-1 after the first period and were losing 5-1 when Blake Coleman scored his second goal at 6:10 of the second. We gave up a goal at the start of the second period as well.

Setting up the goal was, of course, McDavid. With that final point of the night — his fourth in the game — the Oilers captain became just the fifth player in NHL history to record seven multi-point efforts through his first eight games of a playoff run. A 9-6 win by the Los Angeles Kings over none other than the Calgary Flames back in Game 6 of the ’93 Division Semifinals. The win clinched the series for the Kings. Tkachuk’s trio made him the first Flame to score a playoff hat trick since Theo Fleury back in ’95, and just the sixth player in franchise history to ever accomplish the feat. Those two goals, his first in the playoffs as a Flame, matched the number of playoff tallies he scored through four seasons as a New Jersey Devil, and sit just one shy of the total he put up during his 2021 championship run with the Tampa Bay Lightning. They’ll have their work cut out for them at the Dome, though — through every Battle of Alberta tilt this season, the home side’s come out with the W. In fact, the Flames’ two first-minute goals also broke the record for the fastest two goals ever scored to kick off a playoff game, by either team. His quick pair also made Calgary just the fourth club in NHL history to score three opening-minute goals in any playoff game. In doing so, Lindholm and Mangiapane combined to break the record for the fastest two goals ever scored to start off a playoff game. All told, the winger’s got four to his name through eight playoff games as an Oiler. The longest in Oil history was Esa Tikkanen’s six-game stretch back in 1990. Over the veteran’s past five starts at the Dome, he’s posted an .852 save percentage and a 5.22 goals-against average. Two minutes into the third period, the match was knotted at 6-6.

The Oilers will have to get a handle on Matthew Tkachukwho runs his mouth and has the game to back it up. “I think there was a physical attachment to the game early. “To a man, not one of us was anywhere near we needed to be when we started the game,” Woodcroft said. We gave up a goal at the start of the second period as well. With the way the Oilers have performed for Woodcroft to this point, I just didn’t expect it in the series opener. As it stands going into Game 2 in Calgary Friday, there’s no need for Woodcroft and his staff to get carried away even if a chunk of the fanbase already has.
