Bohemia really is starting from scratch with the new engine, and that means the modders who have been the lifeblood of the series for years are too. Bohemia really wants its modding community to get its hands on Workbench, Enfusion's creative suite that is apparently the same tools the studio is using to make the game. This is what Bohemia told press during a presentation last week, though a press release provided later says Bohemia is "pledging continued support" for Reforger after focus shifts to Arma 4. You read right: there's a new Arma game out today, but fans eager for the next generation of Arma will have to check their expectations at the door. Reforger will not one day become Arma 4 and Bohemia isn't promising any Arma 4 discounts to Reforger's earliest adopters. Bohemia is surprise launching Arma Reforger, an introductory version of what Arma 4 will eventually be, today in early access for $30 on Steam.

I was granted access to a pre-release build, which gave me a tutorial and a few multiplayer servers that were otherwise abandoned by any other actual human players, and it was immediately clear that Bohemia's graphical retrofitting paid off. The main menu includes a link to the Workshop, where players will be able to upload their own bespoke creations directly to the game's servers. Arma Reforger is looking like another solid entry with lots of shooting and wide vistas that demand teamwork and cooperation. With all of this content and focus on multiplayer and player creativity, Arma Reforger looks like a really good time. X as a game preview, Reforger is looking promising for what the next mainline Arma game will bring. Also, thanks to the Enfusion engine, players can mod Arma Reforger using the exact same tools used to make it. Reforger uses the proprietary Enfusion engine, while showing what the gameplay, modding tools, and operation of the severe infrastructure in Arma 4 will be like, when that game is eventually released. This is what I saw when I was able to check out a hands-off preview of the new game.
