As for what would be coming in the future, that’s easy: More characters, stages, and costumes. The gold coins are earned in game by playing, and we assume the gems are the paid-for, premium type of currency. We already know that the game will launch with two forms of currency: Some type of gold and gems. We do know there will at least be ranked playlists for those looking to take the game more seriously, but for the moment, that’s all we know. On top of that, matches will be easy to get thanks to it being a fully cross-play game, as well as have cross-progression if you want to move between platforms. With MultiVersus, though, developers appear to be trying to make the game as close mechanically to Smash as possible. All the combatants eventually collide in a massive dust cloud as none other than Superman descends from the sky. There’s no specific release date set for MultiVersus just yet, only that it will be coming in 2022.

Of course, no one needs any reason to want to murder the Tasmanian Devil at any time. For instance, while I might be losing my mind over Batman’s clear concern that the anthropomorphic rabbit who has suddenly appeared before him might be pulling a loaded firearm from some hidden recess, the Dark Knight needs to have some reason to battle Bugs Bunny, just like Arya Stark needs to take offense at Batman’s unwarranted antagonism and decide to murder Shaggy’s sandwich in retribution so they can all square off. And yet, we’re all forced to reckon with this very real new trailer for MultiVersus, the WB’s upcoming, Super Smash Bros.-esque brawler in which every moment feels like a purposeful assault on reason and sanity.

But it more or less looks exactly like Super Smash Bros., with characters flying all over a memorable WB setting, like the Batcave, and button-mashing their way to victory. For the Multiversus’ trailer, they’ve pulled out some serious ringers, including Superman, Batman, Bugs Bunny, Shaggy (who goes Super Sayian and becomes Ultra Instinct Shaggy, which is a thing we’re all just going to have to live with), Taz, Tom & Jerry, Wonder Woman, Steven Universe, Araya Stark, something called Reindog, Adventure Time’s Jake and Finn, Garnet, Harley Quinn, and, of course, Velma Dinkley, who better be wearing her friggin’ glasses strap.

If it were up to them, the Iron Giant would not be a part of any title that forces it to engage in combat or violence. This way, it could be appreciated that they are able to play as Iron Giant in MultiVersus. This has irked fans who know this is what the original character was opposed to, and many believe its inclusion in MultiVersus to also be grossly misrepresentative of the character’s morals.

The one great thing it has going for it is that the Multiversus cost will be free to play on launch and cross-play. The game was a good fighter but missed some of the mainline appeal due to many not feeling like it was complete. This was a big draw for the game as fans had always wanted to fight with characters like Aang from Avatar, Spongebob and so many more.

These are also the same platforms it will launch on, whenever that will be. It’s also not clear what characters or modes will be in the beta, but the publisher did announce that Taz and Velma would also be in the closed alpha, which obviously weren’t announced for it since they hadn’t been revealed yet. Cummings and Micucci have voiced those characters more than a few times in the past, but Lipow is new to the Iron Giant role as Vin Diesel voiced him in the titular 1999 film.

The other way to access the MultiVersus closed alpha is if you have a friend who is already successfully enrolled, as each user can invite up to three players to join. There will be full cross-gen and cross-play support during the MultiVersus closed alpha, and you don't need a PlayStation Plus subscription or Xbox Live membership to access it. There may be additional emails and codes sent out during the course of the closed alpha from May 19 to May 27, so if you don't hear anything immediately you may not have completely missed out.
