Suárez hit a solo home run for the Mariners, the 200th of his career, off Trevor Richards in the seventh. “Other than that, I thought he threw the ball really well. Berríos has permitted five earned runs or more in back-to-back starts, both losses. Temperature at first pitch was 63 degrees. Luis Torrens drew a one-out walk, but Kikuchi struck out Steven Souza Jr. and got Dylan Moore to fly out. “He’s one of the nastier lefties that I’ve faced. Third base ump Ryan Wills covered second when necessary. “Obviously, he made a couple of mistakes on the home run balls,” Servais said. He’s 2-0 with a 1.56 ERA during that span, striking out 20 in 17 1/3 innings. Both came off right-hander Chris Flexen (1-6), who lost his fourth straight decision. Seattle is 7-13 on the road. To see him being aggressive, going after hitters, I think that’s huge for him.”

Robbie Ray doesn't travel with Mariners to Toronto series (Sportsnet.ca)

The Seattle Mariners put Drew Steckenrider on the restricted list before Monday's opener of a three-game series at the Toronto Blue Jays.

He had a 4.30 ERA in one start and 10 relief appearances at Triple-A Tacoma, striking out 11 and walking four in 14 2/3 innings. The Mariners did put Drew Steckenrider on the restricted list Monday, a move that could cost the right-hander $51,099 of his $3.1 million salary. He previously pitched for Seattle in 2014 and '15, and again in 2018 and '19. He also has pitched for Boston and Washington. Elias signed a minor league contract with the Mariners on April 1. Seattle selected the contract of left-hander Roenis Elias from Triple-A Tacoma. He had joined the Mariners at Citi Field on Sunday in anticipation of being added to the active big league roster. The series is Seattle's only regular-season visit to Toronto.

MLB Odds: Mariners vs. Blue Jays prediction, odds and pick - 5/16 ... (ClutchPoints)

Two American League teams that have been slumping of late meet for the first time since last season as the Seattle Mariners will travel to the Great North ...

This certainly was not the case over the weekend, as the Blue Jays dropped the ultimate rubber match on Sunday to the Rays, capping off a very poor 2-7 road trip. Flexen will be given the chance to flex his muscles on Monday, as the 27-year-old California native has an earned-run average of 4.09 through 11 innings pitched against Toronto in his career. At the dish, the Mariners have been slightly average as a team, but they have been carried by third baseman Ty France, who has hit .331 while raking in 25 RBI to lead Seattle thus far. Believe it or not, Seattle did just that over the weekend by taking two of three games over a New York Mets team that has been one of the best teams in all of baseball. Despite the Mariners not appearing to be that same caliber team as they were early in the season, there is still plenty of time to change their losing narrative. After a strong start to this season, the Mariners have slightly fizzled off since then and have not been able to remain consistent.

The Toronto Blue Jays return home after a 2-7 road trip that saw them lose all three series.

Mariners over 3.5 runs (-120): While Kikuchi has rebounded in May, we can’t ignore his control problems. That combination should allow Seattle to get runners on early and put pressure on Kikuchi, who will be facing a lineup that has the eighth-best wRC+ (112) versus lefties. Kikuchi over 5.5 strikeouts (+117): The lefty has punched out seven batters in back-to-back starts after tinkering with his repertoire. Right-handed hitters, which all of those top four are, have posted an .825 OPS against Flexen and he’s 34th in contact rate among 94 pitchers who have thrown at least 30 innings. Today is a good opportunity to do just that. Because this is largely the same offence.

Mariners Place 1 Player on Restricted List for Blue Jays Series (Sports Illustrated)

The roster move indicates Drew Steckenrider is unvaccinated and won't travel to Toronto.

Players on the restricted list due to vaccine issues do not get paid or accrue service time. The Mariners have placed relief pitcher Drew Steckenrider on MLB’s restricted list Monday ahead of the club’s series versus the Blue Jays, indicating he isn’t fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and won’t travel to Toronto. Currently, to enter Canada, the Canadian government requires a person must have received a second COVID-19 vaccine dose—or one dose of Johnson & Johnson—at least 14 days prior to entry.

Adolis García hit a pair of home runs and drove in 5, good enough to take home the Monster Bat award. The Mariners enter play with a middle of the pack offense, maybe a bit better even. His bullpen finished up his hitless outing, but his Reds still lost to the Pirates 1-0. The Mariners’ bats have scored a total of 1 run in his 5 losses, while his lone win came in a 4-1 game. Tyler Heineman had caught 4 of Kikuchi’s 6 starts, but with Heineman optioned to make room for Danny Jansen, he won’t be catching him today. Newcomers Eugenio Suárez (122 wRC+) and Adam Frazier (114 wRC+) round out a very strong infield. George Springer returned to the lineup yesterday, but it probably wasn’t the smartest of choices. Chris Flexen will get the ball for the Mariners, and he’s having a bit of a rough year. Through 34 innings, he has just 22 strikeouts against 10 walks, so he will get a lot of balls in play off him. Yusei Kikuchi will face his former team, the one he spent his first three seasons in the Majors with. Only once has he allowed more than 3 runs in a start, and he has thrown a quality start in 3 of his 6 outings. So he’s likely out of the outfield for a bit, but probably will continue to find himself at the DH spot.

Bo Bichette and Matt Chapman each had a solo home run as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 6-2 on Monday.

Before tonight's game, we held a moment of silence to honour the victims of Saturday’s racially motivated mass shooting in Buffalo.

Hate has no place in our communities. It was his third home run of the season and a small section of fans near the homer's landing spot started chanting "M-V-P!" as Bichette rounded the bases. His base hit off of Murfree drove in pinch runner Vinny Capra from second base for a 3-0 lead. Kikuchi got out of the inning without surrendering any runs, however. Bichette and Matt Chapman each had a solo home run as the Blue Jays beat the Seattle Mariners 6-2. It felt great after like one or two throws and so I've just kind of stuck with that." Hopefully, he just continues to learn himself more and be aggressive and build off of this." That run was charged to Flexen. Bichette had a bloop single in the eighth inning that brought Tapia in from second base for a 6-1 Blue Jays lead. Kikuchi allowed only one hit over six innings with six strikeouts. Bichette lofted a 2-2 pitch from Flexen over the left-field fence to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead in the first. Bichette drove in another run with a single in the eighth inning on a 3-for-5 night.

They're 6-17 on the run line as a favorite and I'll keep fading them until their offense figures it out. He's in the fifth percentile in average exit velocity and walk rate and faces a Mariners lineup that's actually decent against left-handed pitchers. They need to get things figured out quickly, as Toronto is already 7.5 games behind the Yankees in the AL East and are trailing Tampa Bay too. The Blue Jays offense can't really be this bad, can it? This is a loaded lineup featuring Vlad Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, George Springer, and Teoscar Hernandez, for crying out loud. These offenses are in a rut.

Mayfield is owed more than $18M in 2022. That position is unlikely to change for quite a while, according to Rapoport. “The most important thing for [Mayfield] is to figure out how he separates from the Browns, if he separates from the Browns,” Rapoport said. NFL Hall of Famer and new "Monday Night Football" analyst Troy Aikman says the Washington Commanders are Carson Wentz’s last chance to prove he is a franchise quarterback. Even with Toronto’s recent struggles, the over is 4-4-2 at this line in the Blue Jays’ past 10 games (and 6-3-1 in the Mariners’ past 10). That’s a slight edge on this line’s implied probability (47.62%), which makes it more enticing than taking the under at -136. With last night’s 6-2 win, the Blue Jays posted their highest-scoring output in over a week. Six of the past seven meetings between these teams have been decided by multiple runs. We’ve all been waiting for the Blue Jays’ offence to wake up, and Monday’s performance was certainly a sign of life. But long baseball seasons provide plenty of pendulum swings, and Toronto could be back on its way up.
