A spat between the White House and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos over President Joe Biden's fiscal policies intensified Monday, with Bezos accusing Biden of ...

Bezos has become slightly more outspoken on Twitter in recent weeks, a shift from his previously sporadic—and often uncontroversial—presence on the social network. Bezos hailed Biden’s 2020 defeat of former President Donald Trump, who was openly contemptuous of the Amazon chair, and Bezos said last year he supports both increasing infrastructure spending and hiking corporate taxes—two key priorities for the Biden Administration. However, Biden’s Federal Trade Commission chair has pushed for antitrust investigations against Amazon, and Biden appeared to endorse the campaign to unionize Amazon warehouses last month. Despite Bezos’ claims to the contrary, Summers has also argued in the past the Build Back Better package was unlikely to markedly worsen inflation, noting in a PBS NewsHour interview last year the bill mostly offset new government spending through tax increases.

The White House is sparring with Jeff Bezos after the Amazon founder took aim at President Biden's economic policies on Twitter.

They know inflation hurts the neediest the most. “I think @JeffBezos is mostly wrong in his recent attack on the @JoeBiden Admin,” Summers tweeted. Bezos responded to that retort on Monday by claiming the administration was trying to change the subject from its inflationary record. Bezos would pay an additional $35 billion under a billionaire tax plan introduced by the White House in March, according to calculations by Gabriel Zucman, an economist at the University of California at Berkeley. “It’s also unsurprising that this tweet comes after the President met with labor organizers, including Amazon employees.” Misdirection doesn’t help the country.”

In a series of Tweets, the billionaire hit at Build Back Better and the idea of higher corporate taxes to fight inflation.

In response, Starbucks’ senior vice president of global communications AJ Jones II sent a letter to Biden’s general counsel Steve Ricchetti after the meeting: “We are deeply concerned that Workers United...was invited to the meeting while not inviting official Starbucks representatives, to discuss our view on the matter.” It's also unsurprising that this tweet comes after the President met with labor organizers, including Amazon employees.” “Look, a squirrel!” he tweeted, adding that “They [the White House] understandably want to muddy the topic. This puts Bezos in the camp of so-called centrists such as Sen. Joe Manchin, the Democratic senator from West Virginia who spiked Build Back Better because it was too expensive. That day, Bezos accused Biden of “misdirection” on Twitter. “Raising corp taxes is fine to discuss. Taming inflation is critical to discuss.
