3 Pittsburgh Penguins Not Expected Back in 2022-23 (The Hockey Writers)

The Pittsburgh Penguins had their season ripped out of their hands by Artemi Panarin and the New York Rangers in overtime on Sunday. The team battled all ...

The salary and the production do not align here and management would be wise to make him available on the trade market, starting at the NHL Entry Draft. Again, if we come back to financial flexibility and other areas of concern, keeping him shouldn’t be a priority for the Penguins. Using his money in other areas should be the focus. Management has to prioritize and rightfully so, leaving these three players mentioned as prime targets to be playing in another jersey next season. To me, it feels like the Penguins would rather have Evan Rodrigues back and Kasperi Kapanen re-signed than have Jason Zucker back next season. The 26-year-old made wonderful strides in 2021-22 and even though he’s making $4.02 million on the salary cap, he holds some trade value for other teams. Now that the likes of Kris Letang, Rickard Rakell and Evgeni Malkin become a priority, it’s likely Rust is one of the odd men out come July 13 when free agency begins. The top line was one of the best in the league this season and right-winger Bryan Rust was a huge part of the trio.

Penguins loss to Rangers was a missed opportunity (PensBurgh)

The Pittsburgh Penguins had the series won and let it slip away.

From 2006-07 on the Penguins have been the most successful organization in hockey, regular season and playoffs, and exceeded every expectation that anybody could have possibly had for them when this era began. They were good enough to get the lead in those games, they were good enough to mostly outplay the Rangers, and they should have been expected to be good enough to close out those games. John Marino blindly throwing the puck to the middle of the ice with a one-goal lead late in Game 7. If he had given the Penguins that level of play, a level of play that he has demonstrated he is capable of, in his five starts, they win the series in five games. Brock McGinn’s turnover at the blue line that resulted in his penalty that created the power play that won the game. Evan Rodrigues’ retaliation penalty in Game 6 when the game (and series) was in complete control. After having one of the best penalty killing units in the league during the regular season that unit completely imploded on itself in the playoffs. Given how bad they were in the series it was fitting, then, that this unit was on the ice to end the series. They did a fantastic job insulating him and were asking for the routine. The guy has played 150 games in the NHL and has had varying degrees of success. They had the Rangers completely buried with two-goal leads in Games 5 and 6, and a lead with less than six minutes to play in Game 7. The Penguins’ 4-3 overtime loss on Sunday night capped off an historic collapse in which the Penguins not only lost a 3-1 series lead, but blew leads in all three games to close out the series.

PHN Postgame: Penguins Outplayed Rangers, Loss Invites Big ... (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)

The Pittsburgh Penguins invited offseason upheaval after dominating the Rangers but losing Game 7. Dan Kingerski breaks it down from MSG...

The photo is courtesy of 93-7 the Fan’s Jeff Hatthorn. We were tossed out of MSG at 12:30 a.m., so we had to finish writing back at the hotel and film the video outside. We also plan to cover the 2022 NHL Draft, which could be significant for the Penguins. Jake Guentzel kicked a bouncing into the air and then whacked it past New York goalie Igor Shesterkin. Evan Rodrigues disrupted the New York power play for an unassisted breakaway goal. The Penguins felt they deserved better. The Penguins PK could not hang on, and when the red lights behind Tristan Jarry, it was over. The Penguins had 13 high-danger chances compared to just five for the Rangers.

End of an era? Penguins at crossroads after playoff exit (TSN)

PITTSBURGH (AP) — For the better part of two decades, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang have served as the foundation upon which the Pittsburgh ...

While Crosby stressed his team couldn't just flip a switch and get going, that's precisely what the Penguins did in taking three of four to start the series. The possibility of Malkin and Letang returning comes down to money. Jarry bounced back from a rocky playoff series against the Islanders last spring to make his second All-Star team. Fenway Sports Group — which bought the team from Ron Burkle and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux last fall — has pledged to continue spending to the salary cap. What he commands on the open market may depend on whether teams think his output is a byproduct of playing alongside Crosby. Then a two-month stretch where they were arguably the best team in the league, followed by a limp to the finish that included three mostly listless losses to the Rangers. “They're all different," said Crosby, who missed a portion of Game 5 and all of Game 6 after getting hit in the head by New York's Vincent Trouba. “It's kind of hard to go through all of them. Crosby is well aware this could have been the last time Malkin and Letang are among those wearing a Penguins sweater. We put ourselves in a good spot to be up 3-1.” Both are free agents this summer, as is forward Bryan Rust, whose dynamic play helped the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. Not after a gut-wrenching playoff loss to the New York Rangers, when a 3-1 series lead ended with the Penguins being on the wrong end of the handshake line at raucous Madison Square Garden after the Rangers pulled off one staggering comeback after another. And for the better part of a month, Crosby did his best to block it out.

The bad news? The good news? It’s impossible to visualize Malkin or Letang playing in a different NHL jersey, but maybe they will.

If the Blazers decide to go under the cap and use cap room, they’ll forfeit these exceptions (and their trade exceptions) and instead gain access to the room exception ($5,329,000). Salary and cap information from Basketball Insiders and RealGM was used in the creation of this post. Brandishing a new-look slider in place of his former curveball and having all but scrapped his changeup, Heaney posted a mammoth 20.5 percent swinging-strike rate and 36.5 percent opponents’ chase rate prior to landing on the IL. He inked a one-year, $8.5M deal with the Dodgers at the beginning of the offseason. The suit also notes that the Meadowlands in New Jersey is the “site of one of the country’s biggest garbage dumps for decades before defendants’ stadiums were built on top of it.” The NFL, Giants and Jets filed paperwork on April 25 seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed. Kershaw has a 1.80 ERA through five starts and 30 innings this season but recently landed on the shelf owing to a hip issue that was treated with an epidural. The response said the use of “New York” in the teams’ names is not misleading, especially since Manhattan is just seven miles from MetLife Stadium. NFL teams have rights to a 75-mile radius of territory. As for New York, it'll be a bullpen game so there's going to be some variance, but the team has the arm talent to keep them in the game. “MetLife Stadium is located in the swamps of East Rutherford, NJ, which has a population under 10,000, the 116th largest city in New Jersey. It’s not exactly an exciting and romantic destination[,] and the Giants, Jets and MetLife Stadium have absolutely no connection whatsoever with the city, county or state of New York.” Suero and Wilkins say they were fooled into thinking the Giants and Jets played in New York by false advertising and other deceptive practices. As Rich Calder of the New York Post notes, NFL fans Abdiell Suero and Maggie Wilkins demanded back in January that the Giants and Jets be forced to move to the Big Apple. The two teams currently share MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Obviously there is no chance of the two franchises moving states, so the fans amended their lawsuit last month. But with Phoenix's dismal performance in Game 7 and exit from the NBA playoffs, it's fair to wonder if Paul is in fact ready to retire. Even though the Game 7 action in the NBA disappointed on Sunday, we still should have two wildly entertaining Conference Finals. Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks take on Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, while Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat will take on the red-hot Boston Celtics and Jayson Tatum. What are the odds for each of these teams to make the NBA Finals? Here’s the latest from WynnBET Sportsbook: Miami Heat’s Odds to Win Eastern Conference Finals The Heat may be the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, but they aren’t favored to beat the surging Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Heat are +165 to advance to the NBA Finals for the second time since the 2019-20 season. He ranks seventh in total strokes gained this season, but yet is 63/1? Not only that, but his 20th ranking in driving accuracy is going to help quite a bit at Southern hills, and his short game is amongst the strongest in the field. The 45-year-old defenseman suited up for 72 games with the New York Islanders this season, his most games in a season since he played 73 in 2017-18.

After taking some time to regroup and take in the end of the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins management have many decisions to ponder and make. With all of the moving pieces that remain to be set, this is sure to be the most interesting and possibly roster shattering off-season the Penguins have seen since before Sidney Crosby arrived in 2005. And while his performance in the playoffs was better than the regular season, it might not have done enough to convince management to keep him around. Jeff Carter was given a contract extension this season by GM Hextall midseason, the only player out of the pending free agent group to do so. The first of which is Kasperi Kapanen, who will be a restricted free agent. He's made $3.5 million over the past few seasons and is in line for a substantial raise.

The Rangers were able to rally from a 3-1 series deficit and ward off elimination twice throughout the playoff series. This Rangers team became just the third in franchise history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit, and is the first to reach Round 2 since they did so in the 2016-17 season. The NY Rangers Artemi Panerin scored the winning overtime goal to bring the Rangers to a 4-3 Game 7 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning the first-round of the Stanley Cup playoff series.
