Beyond the Boxscore: Johnny Gaudreau comes up clutch as the ... (Flames Nation)

All I had to see with was the streetlights that came on. Why was I out there? Well, it was Game 7 of the Stanley cup playoffs and little Shane had to make sure ...

Sportsnet has announced Chris Cuthbert for the Flames second round series – so my farewell for the season to Rick Ball, always a pleasure for Flames fans to listen to your games. Player Spotlight – Johnny Gaudreau – Johnny Hockey was the single best skater on the ice tonight. A massive opportunity with amazing chances but as was the story for most of everything this series Oettinger was in the way. Enough about the other teams goaltender – the entire series the one player to constantly change momentum and put the team on his back was Johnny. He was at true superstar level and now has a superstar goal to add to his resume. The hair on my arms was on edge, I was constantly pacing, and I loved it. He spent quite a bit of the early games in the penalty box – but he needs to be on the ice. In The Crease – So I said earlier Oettinger had the best first round goaltending performance ever – but the Flames man got the win. Michael Stone (4.28 // 0.95) was the one who led in score though. Game Score – Who did you have your money on for the best game of a Flame? Now Johnny Gaudreau (2.87 game // 1.85 average) was fantastic. Tkachuk was a significant game changer in Game 7 – his strongest game of the series. Oliver Kylington (81.01%) hardly had his shaky moments and was huge with his partner as the two of them were constantly in the offensive zone. All I had to see with was the streetlights that came on.

"It's going to be a lot of fun, good for the province, going to be a lot of fun for them, for us. "Played a hell of a game. "I thought we could win the series. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have been close to overtime," Benn said of Oettinger. "He's a phenomenal young goalie. We believed in each other," Benn said. It's going to be a pretty cool series."

Gaudreau the hero as Flames advance past Stars (TSN)

At times during Sunday's winner-take-all Game 7, it felt like the Calgary Flames would never again solve Jake Oettinger. The Dallas Stars goalie, ...

“I’ve been here for nine years and never had a sniff of them in the playoffs, so it’s pretty special,” Gaudreau said. "We did that in the series a couple of times and not only in this series but in games, we were down a few times and found a way to battle back and win games. “I’ve said it all along, this is a team that had to get a foundation in place and stick with it,” Sutter said. “This one’s going to hurt for a long time.” “It was awesome,” Gaudreau said. Then Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau had the puck at the side of the net and fired a perfect shot over Oettinger’s left shoulder, sending the Saddledome into a frenzy after the 3-2 Game 7 overtime victory.

Heika's Take: Jake Oettinger's 64-save effort will never be forgotten (BlueJackets.com)

The 23-year-old delivers one of the finest Game 7 performances in playoff history, but Dallas' season ends with a 3-2 overtime loss to Calgary ... The Stars left ...

The Flames finished with a plus-85 goal differential, best in the Western Conference. The Stars were the worst at minus-8. Hintz had an upper-body injury and then reacted poorly to the treatment, so he was a very late scratch. Oettinger received heavy praise on social media throughout the league, and Flames players made a special effort to congratulate him in the handshake line. However, Oettinger, Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson are a big part of the core going forward, and first-round draft pick Ty Dellandrea made a great impression in his first playoff game, logging just under 20 minutes. "He's a young guy, this is his first run through the playoffs and he's going to gain from his experience. I feel like I'm just scratching the surface of where I'm going to be one day. "Johnny made a great shot right under the bar. He earned the right to be the team's starter, and he stepped up even further in the postseason. The young goalie played last season but was expected to do most of his work in the AHL this year. "Jake Oettinger's a franchise goalie, and he's going to get better," Bowness said. They also had a Game 7 overtime victory against Colorado in 2020 en route to the Stanley Cup Final. So, they understand the work that's required. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't have been close to overtime and having a chance to win."

Calgary Flames fans gathered by the thousands at the Red Lot on Sunday evening to watch the nail-biting seventh game of the first-round NHL playoff series…

But fans knew there was still plenty of time left, and roared for every Flames play on the puck. I’ve gone to games growing up.” It would be a dream come true to see my hometown team go on a run and having a team that’s so great.” Signatures were still being added as people passed by Scott, who had markers ready. The lot was a “C of Red,” as the free tickets for the event sold out minutes after being released. Article content

Flames Weekly: Game 7 Win Tees up 1st Battle of Alberta in 30 Years (The Hockey Writers)

The Flames had only advanced to the second round twice since their lone Stanley Cup win in 1989 but after Sunday night you can make it three.

The Flames put a franchise-record 67 shots on the Dallas net, and it was just enough to win the series and set a date with their provincial rivals two-and-a-half hours up the highway. The Flames are fortunate to get a couple of days off before they start their second-round series against the Edmonton Oilers. After the gruelling seven-game series they just wrapped up, I think they’re going to need it. The tide turned for the home squad early in the second period after Tyler Toffoli potted his first of the series on a nice deflection from the point. So, after a scoreless third period where the visitors pushed back and outshot the home team, this game headed to overtime, which was fitting for a series that was tied 14-14 in total goals. “You dream of stuff like that, scoring in Game 7 in overtime”. I have to admit, while the goals were definitely hard to come by, this had to be one of the most hard-fought, tight-checking series I’ve ever witnessed. The Flames have only made it to the second round twice in three decades, so they knew the immense pressure to close out the series was squarely on their shoulders as they took to the ice for Game 6 in Dallas on Friday night. After the game, the man of the hour talked to the media about scoring the game-winner. With Calgary down 3-2 midway through the third, Markstrom made what could be the save of the playoffs to keep his team in the game. The Stars then padded their lead early in the second frame and the Flames desperately needed a hero to kick start the comeback. Fresh off a Game 4 victory where they peppered the Stars’ Oettinger with a franchise-record 54 shots, Game 5 was another tight-checking, tough slog as the Flames found themselves down 1-0 heading into the third after Dallas’ Jason Robertson scored his first of the postseason. After a scoreless first frame, Rasmus Andersson got the boys in red on the board midway through the second period with a blast from the point on a 5-on-3 power play. This opening-round series with the Stars was punctuated with plenty of rough stuff, great goaltending and an extremely tight-checking mentality that made it the lowest-scoring opener in the NHL playoffs.

Gaudreau's OT goal gives Flames 3-2 win over Stars in Game 7 (Spectrum News)

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Johnny Gaudreau saw the puck bouncing his way, so he raced over, slapped it toward the net — and sent the Calgary Flames to a Game 7 ...

“It was one of the best feelings I’ve had in hockey when that went in for Johnny.” Tyler Seguin was at the side of the net when he fed Benn in the mid-slot and the Stars captain beat Markstrom stick side. The Flames tied it at 2 in the second period on Tkachuk’s goal a second after a minor penalty by Dallas expired. “Not many guys have done and not many get the opportunity to do it. “I’ve been here for nine years and never had even a sniff of a chance to play them in playoffs, so it’s pretty special,” Gaudreau said. Oettinger became the second player in NHL history to have 60 or more saves in a Game 7 since 1955, when shots on goal were first tracked.

How the Flames got past Jake Oettinger and into Round 2: 'We ... (The Athletic)

After seven games, 15 extra minutes, and a 14-14 tie, that's what it took to get the Calgary Flames to the second round of the playoffs.

Next, the Flames will be facing the Edmonton Oilers, the club’s provincial rivals in what should be a heated and chaotic second-round matchup. However, after that goal, Markstrom shut the door, keeping it a one-goal game, a tie, and keeping the Flames alive in overtime. Tkachuk also got on the board for the first time in the series, after only putting up four assists in the first six games. It was an excellent collaborative effort on the back-end, especially after some of the early game nerves went away. Jacob Markstrom let in a goal 40 seconds into the game, and a Vlad Namestnikov shot around 30 seconds after the Flames finally tied the game 1-1. Their 67-28 shot differential was the widest margin in any Game 7 played in the league. He finished the series with two goals, eight points and two game winners. No player on the roster was more deserving. He entered the game with a .954 save percentage in the series. Of the 220 goals Gaudreau has scored as a member of the Flames, it was easy for him to say where Sunday’s stacked up. There would be no post-game moments, no Battle of Alberta, no opportunities for better, bigger things if Gaudreau and the Flames hadn’t figured out some way to get another shot past Oettinger. The goal marked a step forward for an organization that for nearly a decade has shuttled between underachievement or mediocrity when it matters most.

Gaudreau silences doubters with Game 7 overtime winner for Flames (Toronto Sun)

There have been moments during Johnny Gaudreau's time in Calgary when he's had a reputation for not producing in the playoffs.

“It was awesome,” Gaudreau said. “That was awesome.” The overtime goal will be one that Flames fans cherish for years and years. He was dangerous throughout the series and finished with eight points in seven games. It might have meant the most, though, to Gaudreau. “Is that a question, really?” Gaudreau said post-game.
