The Juno Opening Night Awards officially kicked off on Saturday in Toronto, handing out more than 40 awards in a variety of categories.

The artist added that he is in good company within the Canadian songwriting community. At previous Juno Awards, there was only one category for Indigenous music. He also noted being the first Black Muslim winner of this category and why we should rethink "firsts." Cardin also had the most nominations of the evening. "It's the most beautiful gift. "This is so special to me," she said after winning artist of the year.

Singer-songwriter Charlotte Cardin leads this year’s pack with six nominees, including one for artist of the year and album of the year for her gold-certified Phoenix; Cardin has beat out both Justin Bieber and The Weeknd, both of whom are nominated for five awards at this weekend’s ceremony, to score the most nominations out of any artist this year. For its first in-person ceremony in three years, the annual Juno Awards has tapped some serious star power. It’s been a big month for Liu: in addition to the Junos gig, the former Kim’s Convenience star’s memoir, We Were Dreamers, was released on May 3.

Here's the full winners list from the 2022 Junos Awards' 'Opening Night Awards' ceremony, which was held in Toronto on Saturday (May 14).

Also, this will be the first time the ceremony has been held in Toronto since 2011 – when Michael Bublé was crowned new artist of the year. The inaugural winner was “Shadows in the Dark” by HNTR featuring Elliot Moss. Kourkoutis, who in March became the first female ever nominated for recording engineer of the year, is now the first female ever to win in that category. Rodrigo’s “good 4 u,” one of the biggest hits from the album, won international song of the year at the Brit Awards in February. In April, Rodrigo won three Grammys, including best pop vocal album. WondaGurl became the first female to win producer of the year twice. Cardin is the first female artist to win artist of the year since Serena Ryder eight years ago.

Then Europe, then back to Canada for more shows. Their touring schedule, to quote the title of one of their recent hits, is indeed “Relentless.” And they only seem to be gaining steam.
