Eurovision 2022: song contest begins with Ukraine tipped to win – live (The Guardian)

Join us live for the world's greatest song contest, which Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra are heavy favourites to win.

Monika Liu also delivered one of the greatest lines in the press pack stuff that goes with Eurovision this year. And I don’t think it is going to do the trick for Belgium either. This is one of those Eurovision songs that feels nice enough, and contemporary pop enough, but ultimately not a banger.

Eurovision 2022 Final—Russian Hackers Say They Can Stop ... (Forbes)

Pro-Kremlin Russian hackers say they could "add votes to some other country" to prevent a Ukraine Eurovision 2022 win.

Naturally, Eurovision organizers should take extra special cybersecurity precautions this year if they want to ensure the voting system remains as robust as possible." Jake Moore, the former head of digital forensics at Dorset Police in the U.K and now global cybersecurity advisor at cybersecurity outfit ESET, says, "it is unsurprising it has also become a target for a cyberattack, particularly when winning is so entwined with national pride. In an apparent attempt to prevent or disrupt the online voting for current Eurovision favorites from Ukraine, the Kalush Orchestra, Killnet has hinted it could target Eurovision servers. The threat is certainly there, although whether it will amount to anything is, frankly, unlikely. The messaging is quite mixed to say the least. This involved disrupting "the Anonymous website."

Dancer Vlad Kurochka is with the group in Italy. This year, Achille Lauro -- a man who takes his stage name from a famously hijacked cruise ship -- picks up the mantle for the smallest country in the competition. But this is still Eurovision, and it is still weird -- so casual viewers tuning in exclusively to shake their heads and tut won't be let down. "Stefania," sung in Ukrainian, is a tribute to Psyuk's mother, who still lives in the western city of Kalush from which the band takes its name. (Though he's still got a way to go to beat last year's winners, who were ultimately cleared of taking cocaine on air following a viral video that sparked an investigation by organizers.) The 2020 edition was canceled, and last year's took place with crowd restrictions. "I think it's all about the deep hydration." They most closely resemble a TikTok-ified Daft Punk, had the legendary French pair hired David Lynch as their artistic director and hit the kids' parties circuit. Italy could clinch the crown for a second consecutive year if hometown heroes Mahmood and Blanco deliver. Organizers banned Russia from the contest in February, 24 hours after an initial, widely criticized decision to allow it to take part. Kalush, meanwhile, sailed through Tuesday's semifinal and elicited wild cheers from the crowd when they came onstage. "As we speak, our country and our culture is under threat.

Will Ukraine win Eurovision 2022? (wiwibloggs)

There's a lot of talk about whether Ukraine's Kalush Orchestra will win Eurovision 2022. Do you think it has a shot?

“We came with mud on our feet and in our pants and jacket,” he told me of his difficult journey from war-torn Sarajevo to Eurovision. “They knew we didn’t come for the money or to make a career out of it. If it’s something likely to be played on the most radio stations around Europe, then clearly “Stefania” isn’t it. The world has seen the horrific images coming out Ukraine — including photos of tortured civilians with their arms bound and gun shot wounds to the head. Last year’s split result show that they’re less likely to (Ukraine’s EDM-folk group Go_A finished seventh with the juries and second with the televote). For months the bookies have had Ukraine down as the front-runners to win. They received special permission to leave Ukraine for Eurovision and the promotional tour beforehand.

Despite the UK finishing second, Ukraine’s victory does still give the BBC a glimmer of hope of staging the event again for the first time since 1998. This is the result we should have been having, and we have to make sure the UK is a powerhouse of Eurovision for years to come." "Watch this space," says Sam. "The UK is going to be a force next year. The UK is going to bust down doors to be a part of Eurovision next year. Sam was sent to every corner of Europe, familiarising fans with his song, and building up a unshakeable buzz. It was lovely for once to be able to really dig into the Elton John part of my personality." The result, as we all found out on Saturday night, was the UK's best result at Eurovision since 1998. Space Man had already earned Sam a record deal when TaP approached him to enter Eurovision. But it wasn't just the song that impressed them. "It was something that we hadn't particularly thought about," David says. If you had spent thousands of pounds developing an act, why expose them to the risk of coming last and ending their career before it began? In the three years after, it was... Record labels stopped putting acts forward for the contest and, in turn, the standard of our entries dropped. It was outdated, irrelevant, and nothing to do with contemporary music.

Ukraine's folk-rap group Kalush Orchestra captured the imagination of fans across the continent.

In a bar in central Kyiv, not far from the city's famous golden roofed Saint Sophia Cathedral, a small Eurovision viewing party was taking place on Saturday night. Alluding to the rule that a winner of the previous year's competition gets to host the contest, he said: "Next year Ukraine will host Eurovision! For the third time in its history. "The soldiers would come in to get some rest, we were cooking food for them -- borscht, soups, meat, potatoes, there wasn't much selection at the time," he said. The event in Turin saw several of the elaborate and camp performances that have become Eurovision's hallmark. "On some days there are rockets flying over people's houses and it is like a lottery -- no one knows where it will hit," Psyuk told CNN this week ahead of his performance. We will do our best to one day host the participants and guests of Eurovision in Ukrainian Mariupol. Free, peaceful, rebuilt!"

Eurovision 2022: fans celebrate a momentous victory (Ticker NEWS)

Torino was filled with fire, flare, and fans who packed the Pala Alpitour Arena for Eurovision 2022, where a fan favourite took out the win.

The Kalush Orchestra was formed in 2019. They finished with 631 points—the second highest in Eurovision history. It is the U.K.‘s best result since 1998, and follows a dismal performance last year in which they finished last with zero points. It’s believed over 1,000 journalists covered the event from their own countries. After the rap group performed their song, they addressed millions of viewers watching the final. ‘Stefania’ is also the second Eurovision entry to be performed entirely in Ukrainian.

Ukrainian band wins 2022 Eurovision contest amid Russian invasion (Globalnews.ca)

Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won the Eurovision Song Contest, a clear show of popular support for the group's war-ravaged nation that went beyond music.

“On the fifth or fourth day of the war, they shot our TV tower in Kyiv,” he said. “Like every Ukrainian, I am ready to fight and go until the end.” One of the original members stayed to fight, and the others will be back in Ukraine in two days, when their temporary exit permit expires. “Oh, this victory brings so much hope.” And war or not, fans from Spain, Britain and elsewhere entering the PalaOlimpico venue from throughout Europe were rooting for their own country to win. This is extremely nice,” said Julia Vashenko, a 29-year-old teacher. Ukraine was able to participate in the music contest “thanks to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the resistance of our people,” he said. The 439 fan votes is the highest number of televote points ever received in a Eurovision contest, now in its 66th year. Kalush Orchestra itself is a cultural project that includes folklore experts and mixes traditional folk melodies and contemporary hip hop in a purposeful defense of Ukrainian culture. Glory to Ukraine!” The public vote from home, via text message or the Eurovision app, proved decisive, lifting them above British TikTok star Sam Ryder, who led after the national juries in 40 countries cast their votes. “I believe that wherever there is Ukraine now and there is an opportunity to talk about the war, we need to talk,” said Alexandra Konovalova, a 23-year-old make-up artist in Kharkiv. “Any competitions are important now, because of them more people learn about what is happening now.”

The video is dedicated to “the brave Ukrainian people,” the “mothers protecting children” and to “those who gave their lives to our freedom,” it says. The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. The members of Kalush Orchestra received special permission to travel to Italy for Eurovision, even though Ukraine has banned most men between 18 and 60 from leaving the country in case they are called to fight. The children are reunited with their families in refugee centers and train stations, as the service members — all women — stare into the camera, some of them in tears. “It is impossible to hold back tears.” On Sunday, the band released a music video for “Stefania,” the song that helped secure its first-place Eurovision finish, that was filmed in war-torn areas of Ukraine. “The world needs to see it!” the message said. “This video was filmed in Bucha, Irpin, Borodyanka, Hostomel, cities near Kyiv that suffered the horrors of Russian occupation,” it reads. It is the latest example of Ukraine’s use of cultural diplomacy amid its conflict with Russia. “I ask for all of you, please help Ukraine, Mariupol. Help Azovstal right now,” Psiuk said after the band performed at the grand finale. This is how Ukraine’s Eurovision presenter and commentator Timur Miroshnychenko reacted to the news of Kalush Orchestra’s victory. Next year, Ukraine is expected to host the competition, an occasion that Zelensky said he believes will not be the last.
