"Just timely goals, and I thought we had a good chance there at the end," said defenseman Matt Roy about the difference in the game. The Oilers are 6-4 in Game 7s, including 3-1 at home. And then, obviously, tie it up pretty early in the third. "Yeah, just kind of saw the puck turn over, I think, and we're headed the other way and for whatever reason there was a big gap between me and Leon and I just saw that I could jump in and kind of make it an odd-man (rush)," said Barrie, whose last postseason goal was in 2019 with the Colorado Avalanche. "He made a nice little sauce over to me and kind of got lucky to beat Quick there. It was the third-fastest goal by an Edmonton player when facing elimination. Kane has seven goals in the series to tie Minnesota's Kirill Kaprizov and Pittsburgh's Jake Guentzel for the league lead.

The Day After: Oilers force Game 7 after grinding out huge 4-2 win in ... (Oilers Nation)

We needed to know they cared even half as much as we do, ya know? And with their backs against the wall down last night in Los Angeles, it went without saying ...

Our quarterback-receiver connection wasn’t where it needed to be, it was erratic, and obviously when we went to pass, the passer was not real clean and the receiver sometimes wasn’t handling the puck real well. With 30 saves and a .938 save% to go along with them, Smith gave his team a chance to win and that’s all we really ask of our goaltender, and I thought it was a very strong effort for guy that needed one after Game 5. While it’s clear Drai isn’t playing at 100%, having him in the lineup and taking key draws was huge for this hockey team and I want to give him some love for the way he battled through whatever is going on with him right now. Now, the series comes back to Edmonton for a seventh and deciding game, and I truly hope that the Oilers have finally figured out what they need to do consistently to ensure they move on to the second round. - How can I not start by giving Connor McDavidsome love for what was an incredible performance in a game when we needed him the most. After failing to show up on Tuesday night at Rogers Place, the Oilers found themselves down in the series for the second time, and while that in itself was extremely frustrating, most of it was their own doing.

Then there was Draisaitl, who folded over on his ankle when Mikey Anderson appeared to slew foot him in a scrum late in the first period. The biggest difference is that, today, he uses his video game foot speed not only on offence but to defend as well, engaging physically every inch of the way. McDavid played like a man possessed, his 24:02 in ice time the highest on either team — defencemen included. “He’s a warrior,” said Woodcroft. “I don’t worry about him. He makes those plays in his sleep,” Barrie said. McDavid grabbed his team by the nameplates Thursday night and hauled them up on his back with a three-point night. Look, McDavid has done a lot of crazy things on a National Hockey League rink in his career, and probably taken us out of seats a time or two more on some other night. “His play… “That’s going to be juicy!” “You can see his battle level. “He’s doing everything right, and you can tell how badly he wants this. LOS ANGELES — There is an old saying, spoken inside hockey rinks through the ages.

McDavid's Stellar Performance Sets The Stage For Game Seven (The Copper & Blue)

In what was a must-win situation for the Edmonton Oilers, Connor McDavid went out and delivered a virtuoso performance in helping his team force a Game ...

Thanks to a late power play opportunity with less than four minutes to play and pulling Jonathan Quick for an extra attacker, the Kings did start to tilt the ice in their favour. McDavid is the kind of player who doesn’t come around too often and taking what he does for granted would be a shame. It genuinely felt as if Woodcroft through him over the boards every other shift and it was just a matter of when and not if the Oilers would regain the lead. This team desperately needed its best player to go out and take charge of the moment and he was more than ready for the challenge. While the Oilers put together arguably their most complete game of their first round series with the Los Angeles Kings, it was the play of their captain that stood out like a sore thumb. From start to finish, the NHL’s leading scorer was in all-out beast mode, elevating his game to another level and carrying his team along for the ride.

In this game the Oilers 5v5 got outscored 4-1. Game 3 was a similar story to game 2. The game ended up being a close finish.

When the Edmonton Oilers needed them most, McDavid and ... (The Athletic)

With their season on the line, the two players whose legacies are tied to the success of the Oilers more than any other led their team.

It was a team effort from the goalie on out. He got to the Edmonton bench and limped down the tunnel to the dressing room. He returned to take a shift but went to the room before the period was over. He’s up to seven goals in the series — which wasn’t the reason he flashed seven fingers after he hit the empty net. Cody Ceci and his two assists led the way at 23:06, whereas Russell came sixth at 14:31. It was a defensive stand by committee. Clearly in discomfort after the Anderson incident, he was the gamer the Oilers needed. “You guys watched the game,” he said. He didn’t say it directly, but his demeanour and the way he carefully chose his words made the implication crystal clear. And that was before he chipped in helpers on Barrie’s winner and Kane’s empty-netter. Per Natural Stat Trick, the Oilers out-attempted the Kings 29-24, outshot them 20-13 and outscored them 3-1 when McDavid was on the ice. When he’s playing the way he did on Thursday, there are few that move the needle for their team the way he does. McDavid’s running mate — and sometimes linemate on this night — Leon Draisaitl gutted through an injury on a questionable takedown by Kings defenceman Mikey Anderson. He set up Barrie for the go-ahead goal with 5:10 left in regulation.

Oilers News & Rumors: Kane, McDavid, Draisaitl, Smith (The Hockey Writers)

In an Edmonton Oilers news and rumors update, is Leon Draisaitl injured, and are Evander Kane and Connor McDavid having issues?

It will be interesting to see if the Oilers do that more in Game 7. Many believe it was great that Kane was showing emotion and he simply got caught up in the moment. The photo of Kane has gone viral and it’s on the Oilers’ homepage of their website, but Whitney wrote, “Kane was foolish to have the 7 fingers up after the Oilers sealed the game last night. Former Oiler and host of the Spittin’ Chickelts podcast, Ryan Whitney thinks there might be some friction between McDavid and Evander Kane. Kane scored two goals in Game 6, the second of which was an empty-net goal to put the game away. The Edmonton Oilers won Game 6 on Thursday evening and will send their first-round series with the Los Angeles Kings back to Edmonton and Rogers Place for a pivotal Game 7. Leon Draisaitl missed a bit of action towards the end of the regular season and in Game 6, went down awkwardly during a scrum.

Like the night in 2011, when Vancouver finally slayed the dragon that was the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime of Game 7, a Round 1 series. "It’s going in the net, and it hits the knob of (Eddie Belfour's) stick and goes out of play. There is no in-between in a Game 7. The electricity in that building on Saturday could power a Suncor plant for a week, while the draught lines will pump enthusiasm through Rogers Place like blood through King Kong’s veins. A sudsy Saturday night, 8:20 p.m. CT start at Rogers, with spring in the air and the patios packed from 2 p.m. on, will provide an atmosphere inside Rogers Place that no game presentation department or scoreboard DJ can replicate. We could see it perfect from the bench, it's a goal, and it would have tied the game … and it ends up putting us to the Stanley Cup finals. I’ll never forget Marchant busting down the right side around a stumbling Grant Ledyard, or that save Curtis Joseph made on Joe Nieuwendyk just moments before. Sometimes life gives us a special moment right out of the blue. But the Game 7s we remember, don’t we? “Come next season,” McDavid promised that night, “we’ll find ourselves in a similar spot. “I’m right over here, Spec,” Marchant said, loud enough for all to hear. But at the same time, they ARE back.

But having outplayed Quick in the series, with a .931 save percentage to Quick’s .893, the 40-year-old netminder is feeling confident his own track record will pay off. The 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy winner is looking to become the first goaltender in NHL history to win his first five Game 7s, having put up a sparkling .940 save percentage in the previous four. Kane’s two goals in Thursday’s 4-2 Game 6 win over the Los Angeles Kings – he would have had his second hat trick of the playoffs but for a disallowed second-period effort – helped keep Edmonton’s season alive. Heading into a Game 7 that he described as “juicy,” Kane and the Oilers will be happy to welcome back Darnell Nurse after his one-game suspension, with the team employing a seven-man blueline unit in Game 6 to account for his absence. McDavid, who was nominated for both the Hart and Ted Lindsay most-valuable-player trophies this week having already won his fourth Art Ross Trophy as leading scorer in the regular season, leads the playoff scoring race with 12 points in six games. This season alone, the NHL lightning rod has gone from being suspended for forging a COVID-19 vaccination card, to playing in the AHL, to having his contract terminated by the San Jose Sharks for allegedly crossing into Canada while he was supposed to be in quarantine after contracting the coronavirus.

Couple issues the Oilers coaching staff will need to address heading into game seven against the Kings.

And with the Oilers loading up their top lines, there’s plenty of opportunity now for the Kings to control the flow of play and exploit the depth players. Fenwick For% Corsi For% Their underlying shot-share numbers have also seen a drop when they play in Edmonton, especially their Expected Goals For% which is 48.32% on the road but 39.97% at home. When McDavid picks up the puck and turns up the ice, the middle of the ice opens up because Los Angeles backpedals. When the Kings have caught the Oilers’ forwards beneath the puck, they have found the Oilers’ defencemen pliant in terms of surrendering the blue line on entries. In every game, the Oilers’ worst moments have been when the Kings have seized on the gap between the Oilers’ forward and defenceman. When Los Angeles has forced Edmonton to defend in its own end, the Kings have found time and space and looked speedy in terms of continuing to retrieve the puck and stay on the cycle. The forwards and defencemen have harmonized to tie the Kings’ man-on-man defence into knots, resulting in outrageous offensive numbers in expected goals and high-danger chances at 5-on-5. Tampa Bay was cruising with a 2-0 lead in the first period, but a spate of undisciplined penalties resulted in a power-play goal and the Lightning’s best players sitting on the bench for long stretches of time. In Game 6, the Hurricanes coughed up the puck in both areas, and when Carolina slips out of its defensive posture, it can be exposed. The Maple Leafs are faster than the Lightning, and when the game opens up, Tampa Bay usually gets killed. To win Game 7, the Hurricanes will need to manage the puck cleanly in their own end and in the neutral zone. The Bruins and Hurricanes were two of the best teams in the underlying numbers during the regular season, and both teams achieved that through shot volume, a dogged forecheck, and conscientious checking. Random Thoughts: Game 6 (Oilers Nation)

Again, there is plenty of hockey to be played and we know that one player can't carry a team in this league, but I also know damned well that Connor McDavid can ...

As frustrating as it must be for the players to have nonsense called one way and not the other, they can’t let the Kings win the mental side of this final game and they need to stay focused. As we saw last night, it’s clear that even the most basic penalties against us aren’t going to get called, and I think a key to winning tomorrow night will be to let this crap slide off their backs and just keep pushing forward. I also know that some folks are speculating that McDavid didn’t like it after he was seen swearing on the bench shortly after — McDavid wasn’t even celebrating his own goals so that could actually make sense — but I also remember a time when he told the refs to check upstairs after scoring a big goal a few years back. Thankfully, Drai was able to continue on with his night and pick up a primary assist on the game-winner, but it would be damned nice if the guy could make it through this next game without having anything else go wrong. For me, it was one of those moments where the Oilers won a do-or-die game in an opposing barn to bring the series back to Edmonton, and it offered a little dose of swagger that I think we need ahead of tomorrow’s deciding contest. There is no one else in the league like him, and no one I would rather follow into battle.
