From 30-15, Novak lost three straight points in game nine and got broken after a loose backhand to keep the rival in contention. Auger-Aliassime had more service winners and the advantage in the shortest rallies up to four strokes.

But he was denied the chance to close out the set as the Canadian broke to get himself back on serve and produced a confident love-hold to level things at 5-5. Novak Djokovic has praised Stan Wawrinka on his return to the tour after beating the Swiss to reach the last eight in Rome for a 16th time.

On the other hand, I wish that Stan comes back to the desired level, for sure. I’m sure with his team he’s doing his best to get himself in the best shape, but it takes time. “So of course you can see on the court that he’s slower than he was when he was playing at his best.
