Flames Playoff Game Day: Looking for a successful return home in ... (Flames Nation)

After two eventful games in Texas, the Calgary Flames (2-2; 1st place, Pacific Division) return home for Game 5 of their first round series with the Dallas ...

With the Stars smarting after Game 4, expect them to attempt to besiege the Flames early in this contest – similar to what Los Angeles did in Edmonton and Tampa did in Toronto on Tuesday evening. If he can have a strong bounce-back performance, the Flames could be a really dangerous team to play against. Their best players were their best players, particularly their top line of Gaudreau, Lindholm and Tkachuk. Running with 11 forwards allowed them to throw unique forward combinations at Dallas, which seemed to confuse and confound the Stars. In short: the Flames were very good, and the better team. They stuck to five-on-five more than they have for most of the series, and they were very good at five-on-five. If not, life will get a bit more nervous for the gentlemen in red. After two eventful games in Texas, the Calgary Flames (2-2; 1st place, Pacific Division) return home for Game 5 of their first round series with the Dallas Stars (2-2; 1st wildcard seed, Western Conference)! The Flames evened the series up on Monday night with a superb 60 minutes of ice hockey.

Backlund, Mangiapane come through in third period as Flames rally ... (The Globe and Mail)

How quickly fortunes can change in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Heading into the third period down a goal Wednesday, the outlook was looking bleak for the ...

Naturally, it was far from plain sailing, and the Flames had to rely on Markstrom with just over two minutes to go when the puck found its way to the stick of Joe Pavelski, who already had three goals in these playoffs. Though Oettinger managed to stuff Blake Coleman in close, Mangiapane seized on the rebound, wheeled around and found Backlund on the edge of the crease, giving the Flames’ longest-tenured player a simple tap-in to knot the score at 1-1. You can’t get too high, can’t get too low obviously but you just got to sometimes weather the storm.” Just like in Monday’s tilt, fans had to wait until after the midway point for the game to come to light. The Flames certainly did that down the stretch, as loud chants of “Go Flames Go!” filled the arena as the clock slowly wound its way down to zero. But a four-minute spell of magic from Calgary’s revamped second line saw the Flames turn the game and series on its head, with Michael Backlund and Andrew Mangiapane each scoring once and setting up the other, the latter for the game-winner in a 3-1 victory. Reacting positively to his demotion, second-year winger Robertson – who had a team-high 40 goals during the regular season – took a pass from Jamie Benn and while his initial shot was saved by Markstrom, it caromed off Noah Hanifin and in for the first Stanley Cup playoff goal of his career at the 13:21 mark of the period. With a .952 save percentage and 1.27 goals-against average, Markstrom has carried over his regular-season brilliance to the playoffs. “When Back scored, right, you just hear the building erupt,” Mangiapane said. Nikita Zadorov also picked up an assist on the goal. We created enough scoring chances last game to win the game, we just gave them too many.” “It wasn’t our best second period, not even close, and we had to be better coming into the third,” Backlund said afterward.

Yet another great game from Marky as he has now posted a .952 save percentage in the entirety of this matchup against the Stars. When the Flames needed a positive note in Games 2-3 he was one of them and he still continues to do that. The Flames completely disassembled the Stars whether it be at 5v5, PK, or any fashion, the team was a force to be reckoned with. The Flames were also very effective at clogging the neutral zone and making the Stars play dump and chase for pretty much the whole game. Just like the last game, the team needs to keep up their high-intensity game and just keep pummeling Jake Oettinger with shots and send some traffic to the net. The Stars didn't want any piece of the Flames at all and the series is now tied coming into Calgary again. Coming into this The Flames took it to the Stars on Monday by a score of 4-1 and completely dominated Dallas. The Flames finally took the monkey off their back and beat their scoring woes.
