Bunting led all rookies with 23 goals and 40 assists to help power a Maple Leafs offence that ranked second in the NHL with 315 goals.

Seider had seven goals and 43 assists, the most points of any rookie defenceman this season. Zegras, who dazzled the hockey world with highlight-reel assists and goals, finished second among rookies with 23 goals and 38 assists. He had the third-most points in a season by a Toronto rookie behind only Auston Matthews (2016-17) and Peter Ihnacak (1982-83).

Leafs' Michael Bunting named a Calder Trophy Finalist (Pension Plan Puppets)

He joins Detroit's Moritz Seider and Anaheim's Trevor Zegras as the top three candidates for the award.

Whether or not he wins this award (he probably will), he’s poised to be a top pairing defender on the Red Wings for years to come. Whether or not he wins this award (I think he finished third), he’s poised to be a top forward on the Ducks for years to come. Whether or not he wins this award (if he doesn’t it’s a transparent case of anti-Toronto prejudice), he’s poised to be a top winger on Toronto next season. He was hilariously close to the line on all of the eligibility rules. The NHL is announcing that these three men, in some order, were the top vote-getters, and therefore that one of them won. The votes for the award, as with all the PHWA-voted player awards, are already in; they’re based solely on the regular season.

The 26-year-old Bunting led all rookies with 23 goals, 40 assists for 63 points in 79 games.

“It was a lot of fun this season, and I had some success. He has a knack around the net. The last Leaf to win the Calder was Matthews, in 2017. “My attitude is, keep it going and keep grinding away and having belief in my skill,” said Bunting. “It’s been quite the journey to get to the NHL for me. He’s had to stay resilient and he’s had to continue to believe in himself and he’s had to take advantage of opportunities that come his way. The winners will be announced during the Stanley Cup Final. He gets the puck. He toiled mostly in the minors, before signing as a free agent with his hometown Leafs. Bunting was all smiles Wednesday, upon learning he was a finalist for the Calder Trophy, recognized by the voters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association that he was one of the top three rookies this season. He creates chaos and turnovers, both long forecheck and around the net. Twice passed over in the OHL draft, the Soo Greyhounds — then managed by Kyle Dubas, coached by Sheldon Keefe — took him in the fourth round in 2013. Red Wings defencemen Moritz Seider and Ducks dazzling forward Trevor Zegras are the other finalists.

That also set single-season franchise records for assists and points by a rookie, ahead of Cam Fowler and Bobby Ryan. Zegras paced NHL freshmen with 19 multipoint outings and ranked second in average ice time by rookie forwards (17:54). He was a Scarborough kid raised by a single mother who couldn’t afford to put her son in rep hockey.
